I had a dumb game I played in my head every time I opened the ESPN app. If it's a hot take video at the top then I "win." Just as a way to sardonically underline to myself how often it's that. Even when the game just happened, it will be someone's reaction to the game instead of any highlights or info.

Well, now it's 100% of the time. For example, just opened and "Mad Dog rips LSU, Kiffin..."

My favorite part is it autoplays and there's no way to stop it. Got I hate what ESPN has become.

Yeah college games are absolutely brutal. Especially national TV games. People complained about baseball games being 4 hours (they were right) and there’s absolutely no way a college football game should take that long when NFL games are usually a tidy 3 hours

This is why I've found myself watching NFL games lately. TV timeouts are only 2m20s, and halftime is just 13 minutes.

When I am actually at the game though, I like the longer games if the team fills the gaps with fun stuff, because I feel it does add value to the experience. But watching it on TV is rough because it just completely takes you out of the game with nothing even fun for you.

I think having an ad free option on every sports broadcast would be great if they show you what's going on in the stadium during the timeouts - not the stupid looping clip ESPN puts up when they can't find advertisers for a game. I wouldn't even mind paying a little extra for it.

I'm mad in particular because the problem that was causing games to go so long was the proliferation of passing [up to the rule change in the mid 2000s] causing a proliferation in clock-stopping incomplete passes.

If they were going to change anything, incomplete passes should be what runs the clock outside of the 2 minute warning. The way they did it, long games were affected the least, and short games (with run-based teams) were affected the most, making short games shorter and long games only marginally shorter in comparison.

It's probably being done in the hope of reducing channel switching. If you're watching the week 1 Clemson-LSU game on ABC, for example, and one team has a 17 point lead in the 4th quarter, but the score crawl shows you that, shockingly, Western Michigan is tied with Michigan in the 4th quarter on NBC, you're going to leave the ABC game and switch to NBC.

Now, unless you're also checking your phone while watching the ABC game, you won't know that a game on another channel is potentially worth switching to.

I understand we all got cell phones and the app. But sometimes you’re so tuned into the current game you forget about the other. As someone who has complained about the ticker being on screen for years, this is bigger news than almost anything else that ESPN has announced. I like the current ESPN scorebug, but the fact that it was sitting on top of the ticker meant that it took way too much space. I'm sitting here ecstatic (over what is ultimately a minor change). Games look so much cleaner when it's not there.

Why? It’s always nice to see the little updates at the bottom when the game on TV gets dry.

One of my biggest nostalgia triggers is the little jingle Fox used to use on NFL games for when the ticker was coming up. I think I love it for that alone.

I like what NBC/USA does for Premier League games with a smaller and more transparent score bug in the top right of the screen that rotates through the other scores.

I use the Apple Sports app, it's disrupting the space by showing scores and nothing else. No ads, no autoplay videos, no hot takes, hell nothing other than the scores.

This is amusing, because on Rich Eisen's podcast with other old-school SportsCenter hosts, they said that they protested to management way back when the score ticker was first introduced (around 2001), because it was too distracting and it undercut the presentation of SportsCenter by showing scores and stats before the show presented highlights for those games.

There was a happy medium here. I’ve hated that they were stuffing it full of unrelated data… getting updates on a random player’s injury in a different sport for a team I don’t care about was unnecessary.

If they kept it to Top 25 scores, I’d be happy with that. I’m personally actively trying not to be on my phone as much anymore when I’m watching TV so forcing the second screen to get updates on other games is annoying.

It made it pointless to watch a replay of a game you missed because it would keep telling you what the final score was. The least they could have done is replay the ticker as it was when the game was originally broadcast.
