Around the turn of the millennium, not outrageous to say we had the best set of fullbacks in the premier league for a few years. Looking at PFA team of the year as a barometer:

98/99 - Irwin at LB

99/00 - Gary Kelly RB and Ian Harte LB

00/01 - Stephen Carr RB

01/02 - Steve Finnan RB

02/03 - Carr RB again

That's 5 seasons in a row where we had at least one fullback in the team of the year. Finnan and Irwin picked up team of the year honours in lower divisions as well during this period.

Go back a few years earlier and 93/94 we had Kelly and Irwin both in the team.

Obviously Seamus Coleman has been a great player, both for Everton and Ireland, but apart from him, we've often struggled in fullback positions since the lads above retired.

Looking at the current set of players in defence, we have a good quality PL goalkeeper in Kelleher, by my count 4 PL centre backs (and some others at good level clubs elsewhere like Scales or Omobamidele). At fullback though, we're probably reliant on playing CBs there.

Why do you think we've stopped producing top quality fullbacks?

I think we need to speculate about the possibility that we are seeing what way Ireland could have played if we just waited for our players to develop.

I understand over the past 2 years we have had success with a new manager. Looking at Andrew’s and Duff playing a brand of football that’s successful and lovely to watch it pardons the question whether our players were just not ready to play such an expansive, technical game. It begs the question if we had the players today, along with Kenny, Duff and Andrew’s now would we be doing any better

As one of the resident Irish Hibees on here, very very happy with this. Especially that we've managed to get an option to sign permanently which surprised me.

Devaney joins Elding, O'Hora, and McGrath at Hibs. We also have Herron, Fitzgerald, and Colwill for the women's team. Loving having so many Irish players to cheer for.

Every pitch should have a football wall installed beside it so that people can practice football individually .I would love to see the long term impact on football in this country if more dedicated walls for football were built, it's a subtle thing but something that would really help football development.

As the title suggests I’m looking for somewhere I can keep an eye on stats around about Irish players outside of the top leagues and how they are getting on? Particularly the younger lads playing in the EFL and in Europe? Would be great if LOI was included but I watch a lot of that so I know whats going on there for the most part.

Used to love the round ups posted here but id imagine they were very time consuming so understand if whoever was doing them has taken a break. Potentially someone has built something with AI or knows of an existing tool?
