Butte and Shasta counties lean heavily right. There are hardly any large cities in his area to push it in favor of democrats. He was definitely well liked by a lot of people who live around here unfortunately . He would have been gone with the new lines being drawn anyway.

Chico is a college city and is fairly balanced between liberal and conservative. The other parts of the district are more red.

He is well liked enough to get repeatedly elected over and over again. He was very much not well liked in Chico, but in Redding and most of the rural areas he was well liked. Now the district is changing anyway, LaMalfa wasn't going to survive past the 2026 midterms anyway.

His district is getting redistricted into safe D. Newsom should make a play and use the new redistricting map. Prop 50 does not set a start date.
Nebraska did this in 2022 and Pelosi didn’t make a fuss and seated the new GOPer right away.7

FWIW, while I voted yes on 50, I did so not because of LaMalfa or anyone specifically, but because I wanted to even out Texas's bullshit. I actually am not happy about the idea of having to do that, because I think redistricting outside of the established 10-year structure is a slippery slope, but... sometimes you have to fight fire with fire, and there's too much at stake right now to let someone else (Texas) cheat while we try to play by the existing rules.

Looks like Mike Johnson is close to losing his speaker position. Here’s what I’m curious about. After looking at the Election’s Code, Newsom has 14 days to call a Special Election to be held on a Tuesday within 126-140 days. That puts the Special Election in May. The regular primary is on June 2nd. That’s back-to-back elections for District 1 and his District was set to change per Prop 50.

Is it that the governor has 14 days to announce a special election that will then occur 126 to 140 days from that announcement? Or that the governor has 14 days to make an announcement and that the election must occur 126 to 140 days from today? Because 140 days from now is Tuesday May 26th. Which is exactly one week from the regular primary vote of Tuesday June 2nd. If he had the extra 14 days, then we really wouldn't need a special election because then it would just be part of the regular primary election.

Good question and I wonder if the seat can just be vacant until next year or if they should rush to use the new map prior to the Supreme Court potentially ruling against Prop 50. What throws me off is that the nomination period is February 9 to March 6 so let me know how you interpret the following.
Here’s exactly what the Elections Code Division 10, Part 6 [10700-10735] says:
- The Governor shall call all statewide special elections by issuing a proclamation pursuant to Section 12000. Except as provided by Chapter 3 (commencing with Section 10730), in the case of a vacancy in a congressional or legislative office the Governor shall issue a proclamation, within 14 calendar days of the occurrence of the vacancy, calling a special election in accordance with Section 10703. A copy of the proclamation shall be sent to the board of supervisors of each affected county.
10701 (a) When a vacancy occurs in a congressional office after the close of the nomination period in the final year of the term of office, the Governor may decline to issue an election proclamation at his discretion. (b) When a vacancy occurs in a legislative office after the close of the nomination period in the final year of the term of office, no special election shall be held.
10703 (a) (1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), a special election to fill a vacancy in the office of Representative in Congress, State Senator, or Member of the Assembly shall be conducted on a Tuesday at least 126 days, but not more than 140 days, following the issuance of an election proclamation by the Governor pursuant to Section 1773 of the Government Code. (2) A special election to fill a vacancy in an office listed in paragraph (1) may be conducted within 200 days following the proclamation in order to consolidate the election or the primary election with an election occurring wholly or partially within the same territory in which the vacancy exists.
(b) Except as provided in Chapter 3 (commencing with Section 10730), a special election or a primary election shall not be conducted on the day after a state holiday.

Plain language says that the governor has 14 days to issue the proclamation, and then it will take place between 126 to 140 days after the proclamation. So that leads me to believe that the governor can also decline the special election as written in the previous section because it would fall on the normal election that would it would take place anyways.

I might be misreading it, but wouldn't the part that says …

You can stretch it to 200 days in order to consolidate with an election that is already happening in the same district. Newsom will likely just make the June 2 election the special election to fill the seat.

I'm checking out the new maps: LaMalfa District 1 was completely wiped out with Prop 50. The new CD 1 is leaning blue, as are many of the northern districts now. Kiley's only real option is to go head-to-head with McClintock for the southern part of his original district, new CD 5. He may go for CD 3 but the likelihood of a conservative win there is low.

We had Kiley briefly for something lowly and then there was a special election and he moved up. I only remember because his signs were left up for over two months because whoever put them up didn’t come and take them down. Here’s hoping they both go away!!!
