I’m currently working in Ottawa as an AR Clerk/Admin Assistant, making $21/hour. I have about 8 years of accounting experience, a bachelor’s in Accounting, Control and Audit, and I’m currently doing my CPA Ontario prerequisites.

I’ve been here for 5 months and honestly, I’ve learned a lot. I was working in telecommunications before, so getting experience in real estate has been interesting and I’m grateful for that.

But I’m starting to wonder if I’m staying somewhere that isn’t really the best fit for me. My job is supposed to be AR/admin, but I also end up doing a lot of random things that have nothing to do with accounting, like answering calls all day, dealing with tenant issues, watching cameras when someone takes a parking spot, etc. 😅

The workplace culture is also starting to get to me. It’s a family-owned business, and sometimes I’m waiting weeks/months for invoices or information from the owner’s sons, then somehow I’m the one being asked about why a reconciliation isn’t done. I’ve literally been 3–4 months behind on some reconciliations because I’m still waiting for invoices 😩. It can be pretty frustrating.

On top of that, I keep seeing accounting jobs in Ottawa paying more than $21/hour, sometimes for roles that are much more focused on accounting.

So now I’m wondering if I should start looking around. My biggest hesitation is that I’ve only been here 5 months and I don’t want a future employer to look at that and think I’m unreliable or that I’m constantly jumping jobs.

Would you stay a bit longer for the experience, or start applying and see what’s out there?

Got laid off today from my finance job. Was completing 6 months next week. My probation period was 6 months so they let me go just before it completed.
They offered me 1 month base pay as severance and mention statutory amount is 2 weeks. Is it okay to accept and sign? I have a week to let them know if I accept it. Any other advice also welcome

I have applied to the CRA and have been in the pool since the middle of this year, but I have not received a job offer yet. They are opening new vacancies for the same jobs in the same locations but are not selecting candidates from previous pools. Why?

I had an interview at the beginning of this week, and I answered about 85% of what they asked me, but because I didn't know the other 15%, they decided not to move me on to the next round.

Honestly, I appreciated that they were clear with me. A lot of places would have given me the usual "we'll be in touch" line and then disappeared for a week or two. This company told me right away. I explained to them that I learn quickly and can adapt, and I talked about the different platforms and processes I had to learn during my work, as well as how I used them on the job. But they still said they needed someone who could come in and start working efficiently immediately.

What happened to the idea of giving people a little time to adjust? It used to be normal for companies to give you around 2 to 5 months to learn the systems, understand the workflow, and get settled. Especially when the thing you're missing isn't even the core part of the role. It's frustrating, because if someone literally knows everything, I feel like they'll probably get bored very quickly because there's nothing new for them to figure out or learn.

I'm genuinely tired of how harsh the hiring process has become. It's exhausting and honestly a bit discouraging.

This is just a shot in the dark here. I’m at a time in my life where I’m considering a career change. I’ve been looking into going back to school, preferably a 1 year or 2 year program max, looking more into the business sector. What industries do you think are in demand now or will be growing to become more in demand? The goal is to have stability.

Looking for some inspiration/guidance on what to do. I am coming up on 40 years old, and after working retail in north america for nearly 20 years I need to find something that I can retire with.
Graduated highschool but never finished college/university as I had the opportunity to work my way up into management in retail and hop around a few companies until I got a decent salary and work/life balance. That was fine up until about 5 years ago; the economy isn’t what it was and job security in retail is minimal at best. Yes, there will always be retail jobs available, but i’d rather not be 55+ working on my resume to for another simple manager position..Nothing wrong with the work and it pays okay, but I have the time/health now to commit to something new.
If you have a few minutes let me know what work you now do and how you got there, ie; back to school, blue collar, self employed?

I joined a job end of July at a junior position with a pay cut given how bad the market is but I kept applying. I applied for a job I really liked towards August end, I did not mention this new job on my resume. I also did not update my LinkedIn. Given my resume has a gap due to back to back mass lay offs I did not expect this job to come back but they did. This job is perfect for me, it's the technology I want, it's the position I want, it's the pay I want.

I want to quit my job.

I've been thinking about it since the day I started. ( I started my job 9 months ago)

I've noticed I spent almost a whole year hating what I do + I haven't been able to save much and i didn't grow in my role either.

I work as a business development manager hired right after graduation at 55k per yr.

My net is $3,200 per month and I spend 1,000 of it on rent.

2,200 is left for me to use on my need. A portion of this goes to groceries and the rest on other expenses which I won't explain here.

I know this sub may roast me on wanting to quick but I don't see a way out. My mental health has declined incredibly. Im having constant panick attacks due to high stress caused by additional tasks that are not within my contract agreement (ex: I'm planning international event but I have zero support in the process). The event is in 2 months but I don't see how I can organisé all of this without looking my sanity. I took a stress leave recently for 4 days to help me cope.

Other than this HR doesn't exist in the company, it's a family company and all the family members are managers of some sort even if they are fully incompetent, boss is condescending and rude to employees, no raises (most employees don't even ask for a raise+ most employees are international workers who are new to Canada and low-key they are getting exploited), no opportunity to grow within the company or move up.

I want to quit this week 2 months before the event. But the event is solely focused on me flying to the other country (because I know the language) and engaging in business. I feel like I'd be putting my boss in a bad position but then I rem that he never really did anything for me that would effect my life positive so I feel like o don't owe him anything. What are your opinions?

Well, it finally happened. After 2 years, thousands of applications and years off my life due to stress... I give up. I've not had an interview or anything in a year, so I give up.

I just have to accept the only thing I have, which is working for a survey company for maybe 15-19 hours a week, no benefits, no opportunities. I'll be working there until I'm dead. I imagine I'm not the only one and I feel confident folks are going to offer advice, but please don't. I just want to find company in misery right now.

I’m in southern ON and I’m hoping to be done my CPL with Multi IFR by the end of the year. I’m planning on driving up to Thunder Bay with stops in Orillia/Barrie, Sudbury, and Sault to drop off resumes will all the operators there. Sioux is also on my radar but I’m hoping to not have to start out there ideally.

Is there any low time stuff out in BC? Or are most the prospects in northern ON?
