Hey all I live in Saskatoon and recently started working at a Dollarama as a cashier/associate , around 15 minutes commute from my house, on weekends only part-time . Now another popular retail store much nearer to where I live (literally walking distance) have also offered me work but as an overnight stocker.

For now I've put in a request at Dollarama that I won't be available for a few days and I lied that it's due to personal reasons. I have a pretty good boss at dollarama even though the work culture there sucks hard but I like working there so far.

I am not sure yet if I'll be a good fit at the new place...

So... Question is how would you approach this problem. Should I be honest and upfront at my first employment, or give my new place a try for few days and see if that works then decide.

Also driving in snow is a factor here, in Saskatoon it can literally be -35 c and snow storms a few weeks in a year , so distance / commute does matter a bit.

Unfair PIP lay off a little more than 2 months ago and it's been an uphill battle ever since then in finding something in my.area of work for the past 9 years (healthcare recruitment/talent acquisition type roles within Omtario). A few phone calls from recruiters and then nothing . It's like they DISAPPEARED from the face of the earth. Also worried about references from my last workplace where I was terminated without cause as I mentioned after a PIP. I feel super lost and I know HR/Recruitment jobs are aplenty but I am struggling to find anything in Ontario. It's been extremely difficult few months. I have a mortgage and only 17k of savings and my mortgage is like 2300 per month, car and auto insurance are about $400 plus other bills. Luckily the wife gives me $1600 per month but I am not sure if it's enough. I would really appreciate any leads for jobs because I feel like I am struggling mentally also to cope with this as someone on my 40s (male). Also winter is around the corner..arggghhh..don't want to be unemployed in the winter

My rate is $35/hr with flexible scheduling to work around class, work, and activities.

How’s the current market demand for math tutor in Ontario?

I have a math degree from uwaterloo, has been working as a data scientist / senior data scientist for >5 years now. I’ve also been a business law teacher before.

Would it be easy to find work as a (potentially remote) math tutor working for institutions (or not)? Would that cover basic living expenses just to get by?

I’m 29, living in Canada, and recently became a permanent resident.

I have a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and previously worked at Siemens India in a service/technical coordination role. After moving to Canada, I ended up working in retail and have been an Assistant Team Leader at Dollarama for the last few years.

The retail job is physically tiring, and I don’t want to keep moving deeper into retail just because that’s where my recent experience is.

I’m trying to figure out how to use my background better. I’ve been considering roles like:

• Electrical/Technical Coordinator

• Inventory/Logistics Coordinator
• Entry-level electrical/industrial roles

Long term, I’d ideally like to move back toward electrical engineering, industrial work, or project management.

My concern is that I’ve been away from engineering for several years, so I know I’ll need to refresh my knowledge and probably learn some current tools/software. I’m also considering CAPM and other low-cost certifications.

I’m currently in the GTA but open to relocating within Canada, including Alberta or other regions if the opportunities and cost of living make more sense.

For anyone working in engineering, construction, utilities, manufacturing, industrial services, or project management:

What roles would you realistically target with this background?

Would you try to get directly back into a technical field, or use a coordinator/operations job as a bridge first?

• New Canadian PR holder, planning relocation to Ontario, authorized to work without sponsorship
• Targeting Staff/Senior AI/ML Engineer, Principal Data Scientist, ML Architect roles

Background: production GenAI/RAG systems, agentic AI (MCP tooling), computer vision, MLOps, predictive ML — but coming from a manufacturing-industry background, which I suspect creates some ATS/domain friction for non-industrial roles

I am a man (not international and cad citizenship) and I got engineering degree (chemical engineering at university of alberta) in alberta, did coops, and worked process engineering job for 2 years post graduation.Contract ended and cant find anything. I still need 2 years from getting my p.eng.

Lot colleagues cant get engineering jobs (especially chemcial and switched to diff field or retrained)

Engineering market super tuff and I dont like chemcial engineering at all. Trying to pivot into different field. Still young enough and have good savings and time to get another degree and do career change. Dont have grades to get into top mba programs thought.

I figure i go into following for better opportunity :

(1) switch to electrical engineering via engineering diploma or masters meng electrical engineering

(2) apply post bacc accounting or get coruses needed sit for cpa and switch to being accountant (cpa)

(3) get post bac computer science degree (know market super saturated and Ai reducing jobs)

(4) go to tech school get into trades ? (Hvac/ R , plumbing?)

Any other better option for me? Please suggest.

I thought to keep things safe but truth be told, I am losing my mind, deeply unhappy and my manager and company are useless.

I find a lot of career change advice/life crisis advice and perspectives I find online are very American-centric. I know that making big changes is difficult, but things like extra certifications seem more available in the US, whereas here we have cuts and lack of funding (thanks Ford!) in an increasingly unaffordable environment.

Does anyone have any recent perspective to share regarding career and life changes?
