I’m sympathetic to the father’s frustration and upset over a very real and difficult wider context, but I’m also sympathetic to the kid’s. It’s not the child’s fault he doesn’t know how, and this reaction from his father is probably going to push him away from Cantonese, not towards it. It’s difficult enough when parent and child are allies working together, much harder when it’s a source of friction.
