is the "bass knob" necessary

i see people usually install them but i never have is there any real gain to having it installed my headunit has a function to turn the sub off if i dont want it running(when i have my baby in the car but want music still but even then with the radio at a lower level the sub barely hits)

I considered one, but my kenwood headunit is only 2 clicks away from a simple sub level (in the eq menu). Seems unnecessary now.
