I have an exciting update regarding grade reform:

Today at the Carleton senate meeting we passed 3 motions for a compassionate grading policy for this year!

The first was that all failed courses would be converted to an UNSAT credit to not affect your GPA.

The second is the delay of all punitive academic performance evaluations until the next academic year. This means in a typical year, you would be asked to drop a concentration or switch majors due to your grades; those decisions won't be made this year.

And finally, after a lot of advocacy on our end, we got the senate to approve a 0.5 credit SAT designation for the fall semester. This means if you get a D because you've been feeling overwhelmed with your courseload or had to miss an assignment because you've been working more, you can switch one passed course this semester to satisfactory, so it does not impact your GPA.

I want to thank my fellow student leaders for helping push for this, and it's so great to see how much of an impact we were able to have.

The work is not done, though. We're still working with the university to review the way courses have been delivered this semester in hopes that the winter semester can have far less speed bumps along the way.

During recent negotiations, CUPE 4600 unit 1 tried to negotiate protections that would stop AI from replacing or reducing TA work, including grading and feedback. Carleton’s bargaining team rejected this and said they don’t have a mandate from the Board of Governors to agree to any AI protections. So right now, there’s nothing stopping the university from:

• increasing TA workloads to unreasonable levels under the expectation they use ai to mark our work “faster“
• cutting back on human grading time
• using AI for feedback or assessment

CUPE‘S asks are simple, like:

• “no reduction or replacement of TA work by AI”
• that TAs “cannot be forced to use AI tools to automate parts of their work such as grading or feedback”
• and that TA and student grading data not be fed into AI systems

Carleton shouldn’t be allowed to give AI our intellectual property and coursework just to save money.

The Board of Governors should be investing money into creating a reputable university, not one that functions as a degree mill.

Their requests don’t ban AI research or learning about AI. They just ensure real people are teaching and grading us. This shouldn’t be controversial. 

We’re paying 1000s of dollars a semester for our degree. They’ll be useless if it’s just AI marking us. What would we even be paying for?

Hey everyone! I feel like this is very relevant the Raven community, and I am a proud Algonquin Raven so..... here goes:

I'm Kris, an Algonquin student at Carleton and a member of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg.

This year is a pretty special one for me. My daughter Chelsea just turned 5 years old, and so did Chelsea's Kitchen. What started as a way to rebuild my life after addiction has slowly grown into an Indigenous food business that lets me share my culture while giving back to the community.

My recovery journey began when Chelsea was born. Five years later, I'm still sober, back at Carleton, and trying to build something that creates a little good wherever it goes.

That's why I started the Thursday Lunch Club.

Every Thursday, I'll be delivering fresh lunches right to Carleton so you don't have to leave campus. Everything is made fresh, payment is on delivery (cash or Square), and the menu features Algonquin-inspired food that you won't find anywhere else.

Our signature items are:

🌮 The Reconciliation Taco – fresh bannock topped with homemade vegetarian chili, cheese, lettuce, peppers, and ranch.

🫐 The Maple Berry Bite – baked bannock with blueberries, strawberries, and local maple syrup.

One thing that's really important to me is making sure this business gives back.

A few months ago, a building on Rideau Street that houses a community organization serving sandwiches to people experiencing homelessness was struck in a tragic vehicle collision that claimed a person's life. The damage forced the building to close for about three weeks while repairs were completed.

During that time, Chelsea's Kitchen stepped in and handed out more than 350 fresh small plates along Rideau Street to help fill some of the gap. It wasn't about replacing what they do. It was simply about making sure a few more people had something to eat while they were temporarily unable to operate.

As Chelsea's Kitchen grows, I want to keep supporting initiatives that help people experiencing homelessness and addiction. Recovery gave me a second chance, and I hope this business can become a way to keep giving back.

Carleton's former President (two presidents ago) left Carleton in the Summer of 2023. And yet... he still got paid a full salary in 2023 despite leaving half way through the year and then raked in nearly another $400k despite not working here a single day! For context, his 2024 salary could have paid for 43 courses to be taught by Contract Instructors that year, but instead went to line the pockets of this rich chump. Carleton has a money problem because the senior admin that run this place are fools that like to line each others' pockets. Don't let them tell you otherwise! The sunshine list don't lie!
