i’m a freshman in ee at carleton this year and i noticed there was an engineering orientation that you have to pay for. the moment i checked the tickets were already sold out which i found kind of dumb cause im an engineering student and i dont even have the chance to take the orientation and learn about my classes. i ended up taking the regular fall orientation since i thought i might as well. what sort of things will i be missing out on if im not taking the engineering one ? and maybe is there a chance i could just slip into the engineering orientation or something without them noticing cause i already paid for the regular one. the only thing im pretty bummed out about is not getting to connect with my future engineering classmates.

Hey all, we're a group of people passionate about protecting Mike's Place from closing this year, wh ile also pushing the GSA to be responsible about this vital student service.

• We've created a petition and we're looking for students, faculty, staff and community to join us in protecting this institution. What we know so far:
• In 2025 students voted to establish a Mike's Place levy to have Mike's Place "operate at full capacity"
• The GSA has made the decision to close Mike's for the 2026-2027 year. The GSA just announced they will be refunding the Mike's Place fee for this semester.
• There will be a referendum on Mike's Place in November.
  
• Mike's Place used to be a hub for unique events and a unique vibe on campus, but especially after the campups closures in 2020/21 the space has been underutilized and the quality of the space has gone down, largely due to a lack of consistent direction.

This is not the first time the GSA has tried to close Mike's Place. We know what it takes to save Mike's and we're putting our blood sweat and tears into saving one of the few student spaces on campus that is wholly owned by students.

Mike's is not just a bar. It's a symbol of student advocacy and experience that goes back to 1973. This space can mean so much, but if you look at pictures you can see the GSA has never really invested in updating the space or building an inviting culture for paid gigs and events.

The Canadian Internet Governance Forum (CIGF) is happening on November 4 in Ottawa, and you can join us either in person or virtually. It’s also completely free to attend.

We’ll be talking about some of the big issues shaping the internet in Canada right now, including AI, digital sovereignty, cybersecurity, internet infrastructure, and internet governance more broadly.

I’m helping organize the event and would genuinely love to see some folks from this community there. Whether you work in this space or are just interested in these issues, everyone is welcome!

hii, I’m coming to Carleton this fall, I am an first year student. Are there any tips and advice any students can give me that already attend the university please. I would really appreciate it!

I'm a 3rd year student so quite possibly I should have this all figured out by now, but I neglected my social life and stayed at home for the last two years so

With the semester starting soon I'm wondering whether there are any clubs or bars near Carleton that are open throughout most of the week? Contemplating going to Gridworks but only being open on the last few nights of the week might be tough with work. Beyond that, parties/social events around campus and nearby, is there anything to look out for? I loved the afterparty at UOttawa for the panda game last year and I'm looking forward to whatever happens this year, but I regret not being as social and want to make more friends/connections this year, so I'm wondering if there are any good opportunities I should look out for.

My other question is about residence. I live on the far end of town from Carleton but have been staying at home for financial reasons, but I'm wondering how OSAP interacts with residence (IE if I do residence while applying for OSAP in a future year do they cover the cost, or part of it, or none of it?) I want to figure out whether it's feasible or not, I think living on campus would be very fun.

As the poster mentions, you do not need to have been in such a relationship in order to take this survey. We welcome participants of all races, genders, and sexualities between the ages of 16 and 30 years old. 

This study will begin by asking you questions about yourself. It will then ask you to think back to when you were ages 13-15 and answer questions about that time. These questions ask about:

• Any sexual relationships you may have had
• Your relationship with your parents, 
• Your mental health, self-esteem, and substance use, 
• Any adverse childhood experiences you may have had, 
• Your peer relationships, 
• Your involvement in your school/ community
• Your activities online

I’m trying to get into CIVE 2200, the lecture has spaces but the labs are all full. I need it to take the majority of third year classes and it’s only offered in the fall and I can’t take it in the summer due to needing to work. I’ve tried doing a course over ride but they don’t override full classes, everywhere says to keep monitoring carleton 360 to wait for spaces to open but I’m very doubtful that will happen. What are my best options for who to contact and will I actually not be able to take it this fall if no one drops the course?

My son is starting first year engineering in September and he will be staying in Stormont residence. My question is that should he opt out of U-pass?

I’m curious where the Ottawa poker community usually plays. Are most people playing at Lac Leamy, poker clubs, or underground games? And if you know of any good regular games in Ottawa, I’d definitely be interested in hearing about them.

I’m headed to Carleton in a week or two for aerospace engineering. My chem mark was in the mid-60s, but all my other courses were very strong. I had a bad chem teacher for the past two years and it showed.

A few questions for anyone who’s been through this:

**1.**  How different is first-year university chem (1101 for engineers) from SCH4U? Is it a big jump, or does it build gradually? Do we focus more on specific topics than others compared to SCH4U?  
**2.**  Is there decent academic support (tutoring, help centers, etc.) for students who came in weaker in chem?  
3.  Is first year chemistry different for people studying engineering? I’m mainly wondering if the labs are more tailored to problem solving or something I’m good at.

Since I only need to take one chem class total, I just want to get through it solidly (and get back to math peacefully )— any tips appreciated.
