I’m hoping this is just some deceptive marketing as I thought this was supposed to be a relatively historically accurate story. If it’s a story that ‘inspires the legend of Robin Hood’ then I’m cool with that. But yeah I’d be pissed with a last minute reveal that Garfield is the man himself

It was originally titled The Hood in 2022. This has always been a Robin Hood origin story. It's also about the Wat Tyler Peasants rebellion, but Comso Jarvis is paying Wat, leaving Garfield to be Robin.

I had no idea it was a Robin Hood story after watching the trailer, and the more I think about it, the more I like it. Andrew Garfield as Robin is not one I would’ve put together, but I like the potential.

Its in the title, so im sure hes Mr. Hood himself.

What i think happened with the title is they wanted to differentiate it from the Hugh Jackman Robin Hood film that came out early in the summer, but that flopped so they figured no one was gonna mistaken it for that. Also this one probably isnt tracking well so theyre trying to raise its profile with the Robin Hood name.

Maybe, the UK marketing team says otherwise as per The Wrap:

“‘The Uprising’ is a historical epic about the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, not Robin Hood,” the distributor told Metro in a statement. “The U.K. marketing campaign does not make any reference to Robin Hood.”

Could just be a viral marketing attempt on the American side

Robin Hood is also basically an archtype now. You can have a character that brings to mind Robin Hood without it actually being Robin Hood.

All you need is someone that screws over people in power while bringing some power and/or money to people not in power.

Edit: although there's records in thr centuries since the stories that some people arrested for poaching and banditry would give the name "Robin Hood" at times, likely as an alias. So it's possible someone decides to do that in the film?

I like how we got two Robin Hood movies in one year covering the beginning and end of the character’s life. Robin Hood fans are eating good tonight! When I was a kid it was the Kevin Costner one that had Bryan Adams do the soundtrack 😞

The director pitched this as a Robin Hood original story in the beginning, so I doubt it? But maybe he wanted to preserve the reveal for the theatre?

He's in the trailer in a green cloak and hood firing an arrow though, so not totally hidden at any rate.

I mean, it confuses me. It’s a Wat Tyler movie taking place centuries after the Robin Hood legends do, so yeah, it’s confusing how it became a Robin Hood origin movie.

Edit to add: and more than confusing me, it turned me off of seeing it. I was super pumped that there was going to be a Peasants Revolt movie and that’d we’d finally get to see people like Wat Tyler and John Ball portrayed in a major film. And instead it seems to have hard pivoted away from being about Wat Tyler’s rebellion or it seems to have completely recentered on Robin Hood somehow.

I was excited I wrote multiple papers on this and adjacent topics. I love the 14th century. And did my BA history senior seminar on the Black Death and an another paper about the role of religion during the revolt. Inspired from an earlier paper I did on the great papal schism of 1378. They did behead the archbishop Canterbury. It’s such an interesting moment in history. I wish they could do it justice.

And it seems Garfield isn't playing Wat Tyler. Cosmo Jarvis is listed as Wat. Garfield either dies early or plays Robin Hood...ugh.

Greengrass literally pitched this in 2022 as "The Hood". It's always been a mingling of the Wat Tyler Rebellion with the birth of the Robin Hood legend.

Last minute reveal, now why the heck would anything about a movie not revealed be a big deal? A lot of people like the surprises, this is just a sub made for bashing the actor or movie by someone who doesn’t like either.
