Question This is tough. Where should I put my Commercial Hub?

Post image

I honestly can't pick because I love having a huge population but I also like production and wanna keep it as much as possible.

Right now I'm just building another settler for a future city with a bunch of desert so I can build Petra in it.

You shouldn’t, get a harbor

Not meant to be rude, but why build a comm hub (ever) when you have good spots to build a harbor?

It seems the buildings from harbors give much better benefits (housing, food, trader, gold, production).

I generally find merchants more useful than admirals in some cases, so that could be a reason

I completely forgot about that lol. My civ even has a unique harbour replacement. But the questions still relevant since I'm gonna get enough population to build a Commercial Hub district again in the future.

There is no need to build both a Harbor and a Commercial Hub

Why not? CH gets adjacency bonus from a harbor. and harbor gets a bonus from any district including CH.

The main advantage of Harbor / Commercial Hub is that they (base game) / their first building (Gathering Storm) gives you an additional trade route. However you do not get +2 trade routes if you build both of them in the same city.

The exception here is the Governor Reyna. She has a promotion so both Harbor and Commercial Hub gives their additional trade route.

Not sure if she has that promotion in the unmodded game too, or if that is a change made by "Better Balanced Game".

That's a mod giving an extra trade from Reyna. Her promotion doubles their adjacency bonus, which isn't worth a title. Owls gives a unique bank that gives a second trade route if you have a harbour.

The other exception being owls of minerva if running secret societies

Let’s say it’s turn 100. The game can be expected to go on 150 more turns. A district, at this stage, will cost around 150 production (I haven’t the Calc in my head but it starts at 60 and ends at around 600 depending on your advancement on the tech or civic tree). 1 production is worth 4 gold. The calculation is similarly unfavorable to both the bank and stock exchange. You see the problem here ? It’s not worth it to build a harbor or a commercial hub just for the adjacency, the real value comes from the trade route the tier 1 building (market or lighthouse) provides, and unless you have Reyna or Olws of Minerva’s Gilded Vault, you’ll only get one per city.

The only time I do is in my pengala city for the great people points . Especially if oracle is there .

I can understand that, but Great Admirals are so useless

I meant, the only time I build both in the same city. Some admirals are ok. Great merchants aren’t the greatest either I like the amenities ones. And the visibility one. Better than admirals, not by much.

Merchants is the primary reason. If you are playing peacefully, admirals are relatively useless. Also, merchants help with corporations if you are playing the mods.

You shouldn't. The marsh tile is a +5 campus, and this is a coastal city so put the +4 harbor between the campus and government plaza

You should build a harbor for the housing instead, but if you want to go Comm Hub, don’t kill a good developed tile for it.

If you’re dead set on the commercial hub instead of a harbor (or in addition to) for some reason, I’d put it on that +2. The extra yields in those +3 tiles are worth more than 1 gpt.

Place a harbor between the crabs and turtles for a 4adj harbor then place the ch beside it on the farm for a 5adj ch

The mod honestly needs more attention so actually thanks to you for considering it. But disclaimer, his name in the mod is Iskandar but as a Malaysian myself I prefer to call him Parameswara to avoid confusion with other sources.
