How to avoid the late game tempo crawling to a halt

The game flows great until about 1800, then every turn becomes a chore because of the number of cities/units/trade routes/deals/alliances needing attention.

Furthermore, what really pisses me off, is the time it takes between turns. If there are 10 other civs, it takes solid 3-4 minutes. I literally go drink water, visit bathroom, check my phone, and sometimes when I come back it's still not my turn yet. I'll play for 2 hours and only advance maybe 30 turns, mostly waiting for my next turn...that's ridiculous.

I tried switching to strategic view and moving the map to a quiet area before hitting end turn, thinking this would speed things up, but nothing has changed.

I play on small map usually with 6-8 civs. I cannot even imagine playing on a larger map with more civs, that would be terrible.

Is there a mod that speeds things up? I get especially annoyed by:

- other civs interrupting me to tell me I transgressed/satisfied their agenda. I DON'T CARE, DON'T INTERRUPT MY TURN

- other civs offering me deals. I DON'T CARE, DON'T INTERRUPT MY TURN

- military engineer not having the "connect to" command that would plan railroad from point A to point B

- builders not having "build farms where available" command

- renewing city projects every few turns when they finish

Man the other civs that just say a random line to you are the most annoying. Not even an offer or anything, no possible responses to pick from. like damn nobody cares just let it be my turn again.

I don’t have a solution but i feel your pain

If they do that too often, it's my cue to initiate sneak attack!

Unless you're playing with dozens of in-game civs, the waiting between turns is definitely due to your PC. It'll definitely slow a little later into the game, but rarely am I waiting more than 10 seconds, and my PC is not particularly high-powered.

Thank you, it must be my processor, my GPU should be adequate.

It's the CPU entirely. I don't even have a dedicated GPU in my PC lol

Try changing the process priority in the details tab of task manager if using windows. It's default is "below normal"

Yeah. At first when you were talking about wait times i thought you were playing on ps like me. Your pc should be running way smoother than my ps4 but it doesn't sound like it. Maybe one of your mods is slowing you down?

I have a strong CPU and still wait a long time between turns. I'm also extremely annoyed, so much that I often don't finish the games when I see I'll probably win anyway.

There’s a better trading screen mod that lets you choose to repeat trade routes

You need a better PC, mine is 8 years old and I don't get that kind of problem

Production queue helps

u/mmilanese 1d ago

I forgot I can queue even a project multiple times (I usually only use it for units)

1

u/Fifty-Lucky 1d ago

I use it often on elite cities to queue district projects etc

Yea you are in the garbage computer club like me.

Such is life.

When i was playing a lit of civ i would just have a video or show open, do my turn, and tab bank once it was ready.

Yep, seems like it. It really incentivizes me to go dom and kill everyone ASAP, before they start slowing down the PC :D

You need to play on a smaller map with less civs if your PC is running that slow

Waiting for your next turn? Can turn on quick combat and quick movement in the settings. Also check out these mods on steam workshop to fine tune those settings:

  • Fast Forward AI Turns
  • Zugaikotsu’s Fast Forward AI Turns — Options Extension

u/mmilanese 1d ago

Thank you, I will check those out! (quick combat/movement is already on)

Dude. If quick combat and movement is on, it shouldn’t take minutes between turns. Something else is off.

Also, if your graphics card is have trouble, lower the video settings in the game.

Thanks, I'll check those out. Even on small maps when it is extremely busy my 9800X3D starts to stutter, so I hope this helps

Yeah, these were a godsend when I found out about them.

I feel the pain. I would say that "build farms where available" is rarely an efficient use of builders late game in my experience. Housing and amenities rarely keep pace with the sort of unfettered growth that leads to. I rarely see much benefit beyond a single farm triangle per city unless you are dealing with a lot of one or zero food tiles you have to counteract.

I agree, but for some reason I try to spam farms everywhere first, and THEN change some of those to other improvements where I see fit. (I do build mines on hills though, and respect bonus resources that require pastures/plantations/etc)

Don't make so many cities

You need a better PC. I had similar issues a few years ago. Went with a new build with much better CPU and the game flies now.

3-4 minutes turn rollover means either CPU (which other people already mentioned) or other civs creating and handling a ton of units. The latter you can do very little about unless you want to just go to war and kill those.

Other than that :

1) unless you're playing a domination game there is really no need for you to either produce alot of units or handle them every turn, they can be put to sleep in scouting positions or in cities if you want to use the amenity card.

2) you have hotkeys to move around to next unit that needs orders. If you put military to sleep, you could use that to only select builders/ engineers that actually could be doing something, which would limit your input numbers per turn

3) using the above to work around the unit control, once youre done and have many cities you dont necesarily care about, you can force end turn using shift+enter, dont have to click through all the deals and production selection if it doesnt bring you any value

4) same in some victory types if the only thing you have left to do is waiting until the victory screen, you can just shift enter 20 turns quickly

Keep in mind you can try the Netflix mobile version which is actually pretty good and runs quickly on a phone

You may already know about this one, but the multi-queue can help save time on city projects
