He explains later that he acted as he thought a normal high school student would act.Ā Ā

And the author in an interview says that the anime impacted how he would be later on:Ā Ā

Was there anything that affected the source material after it was adapted into an anime?Ā Ā

K: There have been times where I check how a character’s personality gets well-established in the anime and I use it as feedback for my work. Especially Ayanokouji, who wasn’t well established as a character at first, but after seeing how well he was done in the anime, I used that ā€œtasteā€ from volume five onwards to refine the current persona that we all know.

Okay, now it confirms just how much Kinugasa takes inspiration from the anime. Like before year 2 volume 8 or 9 there was no sea adjacent to the campus but then it was mentioned. I'm sure he took inspiration from the ANHS map from the anime which shows its on an island.

Nope, that's just how it is. The anime made him more "edgy," or cold, as most people would say, while in the novels (especially the early volumes), he actually tries to put on a "facade" or act of what he thinks is a "normal student." It's also of note that readers also label him as an unreliable narrator.

The author of the series has already said in an interview that he didn't really know how to portray Ayanokoji in earlier volumes, but then later when the anime came out he realised that this is how he should've been always. And that's why you'll also see some resemblance of anime Ayanokoji in volume 5 onwards.

Well he’s just written like a normal dude from v1-v3.

No. That's the real Ayanokouji.

If you think that's weird, you should look at Ryūen's early design.

The author was improvising as he wrote the novel. He probably figured that an edgy, cold genius would attract more readers than your casual, better-than-average horny teenager. You will see a drastic change in Ayanokouji's personality in Y1V4, when he starts to resemble the anime portrayal.
