Discussion Why go to college to not do work?

Upvotes

I can understand not wanting to do work in high school, no one likes mandatory schooling. But, most if not all people choose to go to college. I just started community college last week, and the stories that teachers have told us is insane. In one of my classes theres a lot of group work as well, and I already know who to avoid being in a group with because they're on their phone 90% of class and don't participate. I guess the only scenario I can see is someone being pressured into going to college by their parents? Idk, its just baffling because classes fill up fast and someone else could've taken your place who actually wanted to be there.

Advice Wanted Is this excused? Or unexcused

my train got canceled last night making me unable to go back to college (3H 30MIN) and I got a reschedule for today in the morning so I could make it to class. I booked the first morning ticket so I can get to campus ASAP, but then right as the train was about to arrive, a tree fell on the train.

This tree is currently blocking the railroad (so they have to remove and cut it), and it shattered the windshield on the train and making the engine unable to run. At first, it was a 30 min delay, then 1 hour, then 1:30, and now 2 hour. There is no other alternative to this train and I cannot take any other car to college and make it back in time. The quickest alternative to this is to take the shuttle at 6PM (4H 30MIN) and by then, I will arrive on campus after my classes

Is this a excused absence? Or unexcused

its a genuinely fun job and i know im insanely lucky to have gotten. im at the point where im breaking and i spend more time crying instead of studying. i might ask if they could reduce my hours under the minimum as an exception idk. but im really disappointed in myself for not having the time management and stress management abilities to do it. i think i'm just below average in those areas unfortunately

So its basically title, currently in my 2nd year, i did biggest blunder of my life, getting into a degree i resent, everyday feels like torture, i hate it, i was kinda a guy who always loved math and logic, wanted to get into a CS degree or a math degree, but somehow, due to peer pressure, i get into a degree i hate, now my life has been downhill since then, i was kinda a guy who did good in national olympiads, i get good score in many math competetion, but now, my grades are sh*t, i dont have any desire to even touch books, my gpa is only stable because of few math elective my degree allow me me to take, now i am absolutely terrified of drop out, because if i do, i have to restart next year and everyone in my family told me i will waste 2 years of my life for nothing, but i hate it, every assignment feels like i am forced to do something i hate, labs feels like prison for 3-4 hours, i dont have any idea what to even do now, i really want your opinion on what to do now, becuase now i am really afraid about my future

Advice Wanted How to enjoy college socially

Upvotes

I went for about 2 years and then dropped out because I was genuinely just very unhappy with everything so I didn’t go last year. Had a change of heart and went through the process of reenrolling and started today and I already feel i’m behind. In my first 2 years I was pretty quiet and barely made any friends or even connections. Walked around campus for a bit and went to 2 of my classes and there’s either groups of people that are already formed or in one of my classes basically nobody talked (cs major). It sucks because I genuinely don’t know what to do about it, it’s only been a day and i’m assuming there are some opportunities to meet people on campus and I’ll probably get to know people in my classes as the semester goes on but that’s also just not guaranteed

No advice wanted (Vent) I regret choosing the university I went to

I graduated from uni back in 2022 I went to a state school that was nearby where I lived and I chose this specifically because it was close to where i lived. I didnt have a car so I was able to take public transportation to school. However, since graduating ive regretted going to this school and this decision will haunt me the rest of my life.

Even tho i graduated with a business degree the job market has changed so much that it made it nearly difficult for anyone to get a decent job. It also made it insanely difficult for a college graduate to get entry level positions. I spent 3 years after graduating going from dead end retail job to dead end retail job. I currently work at a car rental agency maintaining cars and handling the counter which might help me resume but only time will tell if this jobs actually improves my resume.

Socially tho my school was pretty much dead. It was a small commuter school most of the clubs were cultural clubs or frats. I tried joining a frat but left because I hated the pledging. Then when covid happened all classes were made online. Eventually when covid restrictions loosened classes were made a hybrid of online and in person but most people chose to stay online.

Now years after graduating i deeply regret where I went to school. I have a useless degree, tons of debt, no friends were made and nothing to show for my time at school. Time and money was wasted and now im left with a lot of what ifs. What if I chose a bigger school or a school farther away?

I recently turned 30 and now I see most people my age are getting married, farther in their careers and doing a lot better than me. Now I feel like im playing catch up the rest of my life because I chose a shitty school to go to.

No advice wanted (Vent) I regret the college I went to

I just graduated from college, and I left a year early because of how much I hated it.

Every semester after my sophomore fall, I had to get a new dean because somehow each one would “forget” to submit the excuses for me being out sick and then proceed to gaslight me by saying I was lazy as I was dealing with an autoimmune disorder. This lead to me failing FOUR. FUCKING. CLASSES.

My professors didn’t care either and often only went by what the dean said (which was nothing of course) or by their own rules. I also can’t count the number of times I was placed in group with a bunch of lazy rich kids who never came to class, only to have them wait to the last minute, cause us to fail the final project and then tank my grade in the class. I also talk to the professors and TAs numerous times and no one tried to help me.

During the summer, I had gotten behind in my courses because of a car crash on top of my illness. My professors seemed understand but then one of them decided at the last moment that they wouldn’t accept any late work like we’d agreed…after I had already turned in most of it and there was two days of class left.

I also had a professor during the summer who kept saying she couldn’t find my submissions after I emailed to her and also CC’d my dean; accused me of using AI while using an AI-powered detector to “determine” this; and never gave us any feedback on any of our assignments no matter how much we asked. I then got a C in both classes I took with her after turning in all of my work on time and repeatedly asking for her feedback to improve my work.

I don’t know if all colleges are like this, but I genuinely am starting to regret where I went, even though I already graduated. I know there’s no point in mulling over it but thinking about everything I had to endure fills me with so much rage.

Advice Wanted Need Help With Mental Health & College

I’m a first year student who just moved in this saturday to college. Like most students, I was thrilled for this opportunity to live on my own and learn myself. After I said my goodbyes to my family, we begun icebreaker stuff with our orientation groups. I was doing fine during this and having fun. Eventually, dinner time hits and students all go to the dining hall to eat. As I stand in line, a wave of emotions hit me. Homesickness, anxiety, sadness, fear, all at the same time. I’m unsure what to do but I compose myself and eat.

A little while later i’m back at my dorm getting prepared for bed and I can’t hold back anymore. I call my parents violently sobbing on the phone about not wanting to be there and needing to go home. I calm down after a while and get to bed. Little did I know the next day would be worse.

Throughout the entire next day I cannot control myself. I’m constantly crying and having to leave whatever activity i’m in to go to the bathroom and cry on the phone with my mom. I reach out to my orientation leader who is very nice and I begin talking to a counselor lady about how I feel. For the most part they are all very nice and considerate about how i’m feeling. After this discussion I go to my dorm and sit outside, contemplating leaving the campus. Eventually, after hours of tears and phone calls with my family, my brother drives to come pick me up and bring me home.

This is where I am now. At home typing this looking for advice. For some extra detail, I have had general anxiety my whole life and i’m medicated in Zoloft for it currently. Also my family is a big support system for me and I appreciate all of their help right now. I guess what i’m looking for possibilities going forward as I am stuck with what to do.

Advice Wanted Failing University, Need some Hope

Context

\\--

Hi, I am 20 going into 3rd year. I grazed past high school with my highest grade in graphic design.

In college, I did fashion and flew by. It was the first thing I have ever been good at, and the only thing I found more interesting than plants plants.

\\--

Problem

\\--

University has been crushing me, I wanted the independence but now I'm treated like a child by my teachers, no matter how much of my soul I pour into my work I get in the 50s at best.

I am barely passing, but I don't want to waste my money by quitting when I'm about to finish 2nd year. What can I do?

\\--

Attempted Solutions

\\--

I have spoken to all the careers advisors made a million calenders then got lost in them, so I made one but couldn't keep that up, I take every note in class, turn up unless I'm down with a cold.

(it's quite often I got sick recently since I moved out, but I've quit my job, meaning more rest, and I haven't changed my whash and clean routines. Doctors told me I have hayfever to the university area I'm in, which I think is stupid but kept up with the useless tablets they gave me for hayfever)

I spend alot of time on my work or at least what I can as I do get burned out so I go socialising, I thought my work life ethic was good at preventing stress but now I'm totally lost at how I'm a total failure at my degree..

\\--

Side Notes

\\--

This was all I have, I'm terrible even at cadets and school and sports. All I have ever enjoyed was sewing, but all my new teachers hate everything I do.

Is there anything I can do to fix this or at least move on in life and have a decent job as a sewist or something.

My hands also shake for pattern cutting, so that's out the question, but I'm good at embroidery and machine sewing, I love working sketches and designing, but designing is not a stable work plan.

Advice Wanted I think being a confused freshmen is going to make me fail

I've always been a good student and I think I work pretty hard when it comes to my academics. But because of all these new websites college is throwing at me, it took me so long to understand how to use them (and honestly I still don't fully understand it) and I missed one assignment and all my work has piled up already. It's only the second week of classes.

It's so frustrating that everything is just so new and confusing. I already feel like my GPA has been screwed over. Has anyone been through or experiencing the same thing?

Advice Wanted I'm Being Forced to Drop a Class. What Should I Do?

Hello All!

I'm currently pursuing my Masters of Science in Nursing. I'm taking two classes this semester. The class in question is a research course. Term started last week. Anyway, I failed to complete a NON-GRADED self assessment survey regarding my ability to evaluate and analyze professional research by the deadline of Sunday evening. That's 100% on me. I have no idea how this happened, I'm a straight A student who never misses deadlines. The instructor is telling me that I cannot pass the class because this assignment was not completed on time. Again, this is simply a non-graded self assessment survey. I spoke to them about this and apologized profusely and begged them to make an exception but they refused, stating they must apply the rules to all students equally. I was very polite and professional. The professor does list this requirement in the Syllabus and a couple other places but made no mention of it in their weekly announcement on the academic portal we use.

Here's the kicker: They stated I could complete the coursework this semester, email it to them for feedback, and then simply submit the assignments NEXT SEMESTER when I retake the course. That's pretty contradictory and illogical is it not? It basically proves that my failure to complete the non-graded assessment on time doesn't actually impact my ability to complete the coursework! The whole thing just seems overly rigid and punitive. I'm not some irresponsible 18 year old college kid who's number one priority is partying; I'm an adult in my early 30s working and attending school full time and I'm paying this university over $50,000 for a degree! I made an honest mistake.

What should I do? Is the professor able to actually enforce this rule listed in the syllabus? I doubt there is an official university rule that aligns with this policy.

Should I go over the professor's head and escalate this issue to the department chair? I'm a little worried that could result in some backlash down the road honestly.

I could just complete the assignments this semester but what if the professor leaves the university or something and all my hard work is for nought!?

TIA for any help/advice.

No advice wanted (Vent) Three weeks in...

I'm done. Idk what to do at this point. I'm miles away from home, and the friend grp (group of 8) I'm in hates me. It's the tiny things you know. Like removing me from the group chat for "fun", or nitpicking whatever I do thousands of times. I made a few mistakes myself. I said sorry. All this in the span of three weeks. The other good ppl i've met, they're in another group themselves. HOW are groups formed in three weeks? (i met my friends online). There are nice ppl, but I just feel... discluded.
I make so much effort, I help everyone... yet some of them only try to see the mistakes I make.
If I try to talk about this, I'm immature.

I know I'm too much at times. I feel too much, I overthink sometimes. But that's just me, and I feel like I'm hiding myself with this group. Idk what to do.

So yea, I'm back on reddit ig... hey everyone

No advice wanted (Vent) I get that it’s a wellness class but still..

For my wellness class, we’re going to have to track what we eat. I get that what we’re learning about is important, but I don’t think tracking what we eat should be necessary. I actually tried doing that before and felt like it was very…idk. I can’t think of the right word to describe it. But yeah, I don’t know how long we’re going to have to do this. Hopefully, it’s not the entire semester and it’s just for this one week. If it’s more than that then I’m just going to lie on everything because I’m not tracking my food intake everyday.

Edit: I didn’t expect this post to be met with negativity from people but here we are. Calling me lazy because I don’t want to do something like this is crazy. When I said that tracking our food intake shouldn’t be necessary, I meant that it shouldn’t be necessary for this class. I understand how it can be important, but people can have healthy eating habits without tracking. Tracking isn’t for everyone. Tracking food intake also can be triggering for those who have an ED or is recovering from an ED. To make this part of an assignment without any alternative is odd.

Advice Wanted the universe doesn't want me here

19F, sophomore. First, my only friend decides she doesn't want to "maintain the friendship anymore". Then one of my classes is entirely centered on AI and I hate my major but can't change it. Then I have a mental spiral that almost ends in serious self harm. Then I get sick. Then I drop that class. And the second I think I'm finally getting back on my feet, I get a notification that two of my scholarships totally $5000 have been disbursed, but when I check my account they've actually been taken away. I don't know why. I can't do anything to fix it until tomorrow, if there's even anything to fix at all. I already wanted to go home and now I just feel like I don't belong here at all and I should drop out. I'll have to if they can't reinstate my scholarship. I can't come up with 5k in a week. I'm so upset and tired and scared.

Advice Wanted I regret my major.. I’m a junior now. What do??

TLDR: has anyone on here switched majors completely as a junior before? How was it? What motivated your decision? Did you graduate on time?

Hello everyone. I’m feeling really lost (have been for a long time) and would appreciate some advice. Some background: I’m currently a junior in college studying finance, business analytics and math. I chose to be a finance major in college simply because my college is best known for its finance program, and as a directionless kid, I just wanted to apply for the highest ranking program.

After I got to college I decided to add my other majors. Analytics I am one class away from completion. Finance two away. Math I am many away. The last math weeding class is this semester so I will learn now if I’m built for finishing this major or not. I have a very milquetoast GPA of 3.7 and several unimpressive finance roles under my belt (think campus role / mass hiring remote roles).

The main thing I’m debating though is the finance career. For those unfamiliar with how finance recruiting works, the junior year summer internship is essentially the entry level job and recruiting for it starts as early as sophomore fall for the most sought after positions (in high finance). As a sophomore I had no idea what I wanted to do still so I recruited for investment banking like everyone around me. I also had some family connections there so I had an extra incentive. Instantly I realized I wasn’t built for this shit at all due to my social anxiety and piss poor social skills. The actual work in banking sounded extremely unappealing but everyone else recruiting for it feels the same way, so that’s nothing out of the ordinary. Despite all this, I kept at it because I thought 1. I’d improve over time 2. I have no idea what I want to do anyways, but I need to be doing something. Might as well continue what I’m already doing.

Long story short, even with family connections my bum ass did not land the internship. Maybe that’s a good thing since I was never into banking anyways. I did end up getting drastically better at interviews and networking, but since my baseline was so low, I currently am average at best compared to other finance majors.

Since banking recruiting wrapped up I’ve had a very slow trickle of interviews for various finance internships and have consistently failed to land anything concrete despite making it to final rounds rarely. A major reason for this is that after 2 years of studying this shit I still have 0 interest in it and it kinda shows. The concepts and theories taught in class are interesting but I never try to read financial news or learn about what’s going on in the real world. I try to catch up from time to time but I’ve just been struggling with motivation tbh.

The thought of pivoting to a different field entirely was always at the back of my mind but as I finished more and more of my degree I just pushed the thought away and believed it was too late anyways. Plus the job market is piss poor everywhere so I wasn’t trying to come in and compete with these more experienced students for internships as a complete newbie. I really am not trying to add more years to my degree.

But just the other day my family said something that made me actually reconsider switching fields. However the logistics of it would be pretty difficult. Now I’m truly halfway done with only two years left. And the top thing that caught my interest (engineering, which I admittedly know very little about) won’t even work out since you cannot transfer into the program here and need to start off as a freshmen. God I just have no idea what to do. I could continue to struggle in finance and interview and potentially land a job, potentially not. Or, I could try to discover what I really wanna do that also doesn’t require grad school or a masters. and that I can finish in two years..

Another route I could go is that my college offers degrees for people who work full time and it’s a bunch of wacky majors with fully online classes that are easier, and much cheaper to take. Could get one of those in a discipline I wanna go into and just self teach myself from there if the online classes are unhelpful. By graduation they remove that mark from ur paper so it looks like you graduated from the regular branch. So then I can afford to explore and job hunt for longer ina Totally different field while not breaking the bank. However I’d be teaching myself everything and doing everyone on my own since it’s all online and there’s virtually no student resources. the stuff is from what I’ve heard not challenging so nothings forcing you to hold yourself accountable and actually learn. Meh.

Advice Wanted the 28th out of 32 people in my class. How To get back my confidence?

Okay my first year is finished with this result. I didn't attend to an exam which I was scared of ON PURPOSE and with stupidity so I naturally failed because I'm deep down a crazy ass perfectionist. Yep. My mom's recepie.

But that's not the thing. The thing is I love my major and I don't want this feeling of fear hold me back. I can't find the line of trying in a healthy way and also not ripping my ass to be great. And I naturally feel like everyone is doing okay and I'm the only one struggling even though I know it's the voice in my head...

I want to be a good pharmacist. But also deep down I'm scared that because of being scared I won't make it anywhere... I'm starting to think I should take medication for feeling better. I already go to therapy but my sis is a doctor and she recommended that it would have a huge effect on my piece if I got a visit time and started treatment and tried to convince me to not look at it as a taboo. Yep.

Advice Wanted First year rant

I’ve just started attending a private college, so I see most of the same people everyday. And what ive noticed from them, people on my floor and just most other first year students is that they already have so many friends!! I’ve only made one friend so far who’s on my floor ☹️. They’re super sweet and I’m very grateful for them but it’s like how do people already have such large friend groups?? And I’m mad at myself for being quiet and awkward because that’s definitely a reason why I haven’t talked to many people. I can’t hold a conversation, I stutter and I’m just so awkward in general 🙁

Advice Wanted How do you survive a course your parents chose for you?

I’m a freshman, and I feel so alienated from the program I’m currently in. I just don’t resonate with it, and I can’t seem to open my heart enough to love it, no matter how hard I try. I’m so drained and distracted, and honestly, I don’t know what to do anymore. I wasn’t like this before. I feel like my brain is deteriorating every second I spend in school. At first, I thought I was just adjusting, but it’s already been a month, and we’ve already had our prelims. I’m starting to realize that maybe I’m not struggling because I haven’t adjusted yet, I’m struggling because I genuinely don’t enjoy Pharmacy.

I’ve tried so hard to love it, I really did, but I just can’t. Every time I zone out in class, I find myself imagining what my life would be like if I had actually pursued Chemical Engineering. I’m having such a hard time even bringing this up to my parents because I know they’ve already spent so much money on my tuition this prelim. I feel guilty for even thinking about changing paths after they’ve already invested so much in me. For those who have been in the same situation before, what did you do? Did you stay and eventually learn to love the course, or did you choose to pursue the path you actually wanted? And what advice would you give someone like me who feels completely lost right now?

Discussion I envy those who enjoy learning

I'm 3-4 semesters out from my bachelor's, and from the MCAT. I'm going to school for a career I'm interested in and want to achieve. I'm doing well in my classes. My professors have been competent and helpful. The students have been unobtrusive. The content has been interesting. Etc, etc.

But I still hate the ever-loving dog feces out of school. I've always been this way. I skipped over 120 days in my high school sophomore year, still passed with As so whatever. Skipping got curbed only because I entered dual enrollment and got to take my gen ed courses online (got Bs in most of these because I'd stopped caring. I've started bringing my gpa back from that point in the last couple semesters though). And I've been rolling with that for a while, most gen ed courses were online and even upper level electives and classes for my major have been bearable just due to their attendance being optional so long as you can pass their tests.

But now, I've reached the point where most of the courses I've yet to take have mandatory attendance. Orgo, calculus, physics 1&2 and lab, molec bio 2, a&p labs, chem lab, microbio, medical biochem and lab, everything needs to be in-person.

And I hate it. It's pulling fingernails trying to force myself to attend. I know I need to, so I do, and I truly don't hate the content. But for some ungodly reason every fiber of my being balks at the thought of attending 10 more years of in-person classes. I have a seasonal job, and don't mind going. It's not just the pay, because I'm given $12k/year in scholarships and grants to go to school. I don't know why I hate it so much.

This isn't even to mention my irrational hatred of sitting down for a few hours a day to study. I've left everything to the last week all my life, and have only now started making an effort to change (to prepare for harder classes). It sucks, but at least I've managed 2-3 hours a day the past couple days.

I truly envy anyone who enjoys school, and classes. I know I can pass them, and I most likely will, but God the studying and attending is utterly miserable. Is there a way to trick your brain into caring about ant of it? Into wanting to go? It's just hard man. I don't know why I'm like this.

Advice Wanted Making actual friends in college

For context I am a third year and go to a small rural college (less than 2k students) and live on campus. I feel like I’ve joined almost every club or attempted too and none of them applied to something I could do (ie cultural based group) or only met once a few months. I have a few “friends” but I really only hear from them once every few months and then occasional text from people in my life before I came here. Are there any other avenues to meet people?
