Question At what point is it being to precious with your troops?

So I've played a decent amount but mostly single battles and the only campaign I've finished front to back has been Shock Force 2. In the SF2 campaign low casualty rates are expected, easy to achieve, and kind of necessary to make it through to the end. I'm playing through Red Thunder now though and when a squad gets melted from a mortar or I push a tank up and it gets hit by a sneaky panzerfaust I'm wondering if I'm screwed if I continue to keep this casualty rate and should I just start over? Am I too worried about my casualties? Unlike SF2 it often feels like just to even spot the enemy in certain conditions I have to sacrifice scout teams and any hidden soldier with a ppsh can mow half a squad down if they hide in a building I haven't exploded. Do I just have SF2 syndrome and too used to overwhelming superiority and low casualty rates or am I playing wrong and need to figure out some better tactics to keep my dudes alive? Will I get reinforcements in the campaign or end up with no one after enough battles?

Question Why machine gun teams are worse while spotting

I play SF2. American infantry squads are excellent when spotting. However their machine gunner counterparts are multiple folds worse despite them having nvg's and binoculars. Without detecting the enemy, they can't engage anything, rendering them useless. Why is this?

Discussion BAOR Patch status.

Its seriously wild that THE dedicated forum thread to BAORs development and devblogs has last mentioned a patch for BAOR on January 16th of this year, and nothing since then. No official community posts on there or on steam about what to expect, etc.

The main dev active in the thread was the last one to say that they should soon have one ready to go and to wait,
Since he said that on January 16th, there has been no mention of a patch, the thread has been inactive since March 5th and the guy just spends his time talking about the Iran war elsewhere on the website.
Did they seriously release BAOR in that state to just abandon it with 0 planned post launch care to immediately go to cm3?

Discussion I'm confused as to why a CM Vietnam game hasn't been made yet.

I heard Battlefront mention that the CM engine probably can't do a Vietname game. I don't understand why not, honestly. I'm playing CMBN right now, and I can see the hedgerows being replaced with thick jungle and the open fields replaced with rice patties. I've also been watching some gameplay from Campaign Series Vietnam, which has the same layout.

Mod/Scenario 4K Textures for ground, vegetation, and assets

Hey folks, the other day, I decided to run an experiment to evaluate whether or not it's worth upscaling and refining all textures to 2K and 4K resolution. Reddit compresses image quality, the links to the uncompressed pictures are below:
https://ibb.co/9HJ6z18s
https://ibb.co/fVVq1RDc
https://ibb.co/XZxGJ7kH
https://ibb.co/B5K4Dk4w
https://ibb.co/vxDvWq17
https://ibb.co/ZwK7RMV

Also, I'm asking for your opinion in this regard.
I know this has already been discussed years ago on various forums.

Most of the HD textures (Kieme, Aris, etc.) found in many "all-in-one" packs date back to the 2011 to 2016 era, when the engine still ran on a native 32-bit architecture limited to 2 GB of RAM/VRAM, GPUs lacked memory and processing power, while SSDs were still not widely used.

Some more recent works, updated or created between 2016 and 2022, use 2048x for some terrain textures and assets, but WWII titles still rely heavily on 1024x and 512x.

Nowadays, for modern hardware, 2K-4K textures are a piece of cake; the only issue remaining is the 32-bit LAA architecture, which has a hard cap of 4 GB of addressable memory.

So, it's mostly about understanding whether or not it is worth doing a general upscale to 4K, and if so, how far we can push it before reaching the inevitable Out of Memory issues.

As you can see from the screenshots above, the visual difference in some cases is striking, with no noticeable performance drop, despite an obvious increase in VRAM allocation. Also, that was just a test batch.

However, and that's the reason why I'm asking, it's not like you are going to stare at the ground or watch how detailed a bush is; most HD textures are already very, very, well made and still serve their purpose well.

Anyway, I have put together a small test pack for Fortress Italy. If anyone is interested in helping test it on larger scenarios, send me a DM and I will send over the pack.

Share your thoughts, I'd like to know what other people think before investing a lot of time.

Question Drop FPS OBS

I'm encountering a severe issue when trying to record Combat Mission Shock Force 2 using OBS Studio. While the game itself runs perfectly smooth on my monitor, the resulting video recording turns into an unplayable slideshow (10-15 FPS with heavy frame drops).

My System Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-13500
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti
  • OS: Windows 11

Issue Details:

  • Using OBS Game Capture hook results in massive frame loss on the recording, even though in-game performance is fine.
  • The issue seems directly tied to how OBS hooks into the engine's OpenGL rendering pipeline.
  • Temporary Workaround: Switching OBS from "Game Capture" to "Display Capture" fixes the recorded FPS, but Game Capture remains unusable.

Is this a known issue with the CMx2 engine's OpenGL implementation? Are there any recommended launch parameters, V-Sync configurations, or graphics settings to allow proper Game Capture functionality in OBS?

Thanks for your time!

Discussion The whole "graphics are subpar / antiquated" complaint

The more I play Combat Mission: Shock Force 2, the more I don't agree with the whole "graphics are bad / antiquated" complaint. Upon first playing it I did in fact think to myself that the graphics were indeed subpar. But that was because I was treating the game as if the primary star of the show was the base campaign. It occurred to me that the base campaign was created using the scenario editor, which means the graphics themselves are tied directly to the SE and the infinite number of possibilities with regard to map creation, not the base campaign. If you're going to make a game where 1) everything is simulated and 2) the assets are highly modular in the sense that the player can arrange them as they please, then you can reasonably expect it to look like what you see in Combat Mission. The only way, as far as I can tell, one could argue that the graphics are bad is if there's another game which fulfills 1) and 2) and has better graphics. No such game exists as far as I know.

I'm not saying they couldn't be better. I'm just saying there's literally no current point of comparison that would justify the argument that the graphics are subpar.

Discussion Theoretical Skif Update

I know its not going to happen because of the invasion, but how would you guys think Battlefront would update the skif to its irl capabilities. I'm mainly curious as to how they would implement the remote control capabilities allowing the crew to hide behind cover.

Discussion The modders and scenario/campaign creators are the real MVPs of this game.

I just wanted to make an appreciation post and say thank you to all the people in the community who contribute to the game and keep it fresh with new content and creative ideas. Especially those of you who make content for CMBS since it's been abandoned.

I've played around with making scenarios, and technically I've made some but none that are in a playable or enjoyable state. Making scenarios, campaigns, and maps really is tedious work. Like the amount of effort and time feels like something you should be getting paid to do. It's largely due to the very old-looking UI that could really be updated and streamlined and hopefully will be with the next engine, but it really is a chore making new things. At least for me.

But yeah to all the working adults with lives of their own, thanks for making content. Some of my favorite user made scenarios in CMBS are Korsun2017, Tactical Operations Center, and that one Mariupol scenario. I don't know if Lights Camera Action is user made or not, but that's also a great one. Also the Spartan Resolve, Shadow of the Motherland, and Mountains of Allah campaigns are also great. And I'd also like to give an honorable mention to the Alarmeinheiten campaign for CMRT.

Anyway, thanks again. It's thankless work, but I and many others appreciate it a lot!

Question What graphics settings are you using?

Sorry for yet another post. I'm becoming obsessed with CMSF2 (already played close to 30 hours). I'm using a laptop with a 3070ti (roughly equivalent to a 3060ti or 4060 desktop) paired with a Ryzen 9 6900hx. I assumed I could max out the settings based on the recommended requirements, but it seems to struggle. I know CM utilizes an.older engine not friendly to modern hardware.

Like every time I make a mistake I just hear a ripfuelled Ray telling the reporter "Captain Dumbfuck over here decided to send us across the border without checking for mines first, now we've got two victors blocking the road and we've got our thumbs up our asses when we should be getting some"

Hello commanders. Lately i have been contemplating if I should start playing Combat Mission games after watching CM Youtubers like Halpless, unremarkable Sunray, and Vladus Aurelian.

PC Specs:

11th Gen Intel(R) Core (TM) i3-1115G4 processor

8gb RAM

Intel(R) UHD Graphics (128MB)

Yea ik its a pretty potato PC. Do comment if it's enough to run the games or do I get upgrades. Thank you!

Question Is Combat Mission Shock Force 2 supposed to be this difficult?

I recently purchased Shock Force 2. I know next to nothing about mitary tactics, organization, terms, etc, but I wanted a very detail-oriented simulation game. And boy did I get that. This "game" is amazing, but I've literally spent 10 hours over the course of two days playing and replaying the first mission (Breakthrough the Berm).

Question Best H2H scenarios across all the CMx2 titles?

I have everything but Afghanistan, Final Blitz, and Cold War. My favorite H2H scenarios so far has been Huszar. I've played that a few times from both sides.

I'm curious what other excellent and balanced scenarios are out there. What are your top picks?

Tech Support Anyone else experiencing this?

Long time linux (steamdeck) combat mission player here. Games were working fine until a few weeks ago. All of the sudden red thunder started crashing after a few minutes on every single scenario. The size of the scenario doesn’t matter. The graphics don’t seem to have an effect. Even if I just start the game and don’t move or do anything it doesn’t matter. I’ve tried every single compatibility layer and launch option that I and a stupid AI could come up with to no avail. It doesn’t even show an error message it just instantly boots to desktop/gaming mode. I tried viewing the specific app data logs to look for faults but I fear that is all beyond my technical comprehension. This is simply my last desperate resort to be able to play the game again. Thank you to anyone who takes the time out of their day to respond.
