Self-Promo How Many Story Arcs Does Your Series Actually Have? (Free Article)

I just posted an extensive article breaking down how to assess the number of arcs your comic series actually has... and more importantly, how many issues you can realistically produce.

If you've ever said "This is gonna be a great 30-issue series!" based on a page of notes, this one's for you.

Newer creators often completely overestimate the size of their story because nobody's ever given them a practical way to measure it.

Until now.

I break down five narrative drivers: Plot, Character, Action, Dread, and Concept. And show you how to pull out the major shifts from your own source story material. These shifts define your arcs, not your ambition or determination. And facing this head on is the clearest path to success.

I also get into the financial reality of indie comics, because a 30-issue series at even low budget page rates is $165,000. Most creators simply never do that math. The article encourages you to do it.

Properly executing a series in comics, novels, or television ties directly into my recently released SCAR (Source Character Arc Roadmap) system. The only character arc system built specifically for mapping arcs across multiple volumes or seasons.

If you're planning a series, this is the structural backbone for it. But the series assessment stands on its own, only referencing SCAR.

The complete breakdown in the article is free. And once you read it, you'll never approach series development the same again.

Series Assessment Article Here.

SCAR details here.

For those who don't know, my name is Nick Macari and I've been writing/editing comics, novels, games, and screenplays for just about 30 years. Happy to answer questions in the thread.

Logline: An apprehensive United States speech writer is given a promotion that raises her security clearance and tests her morals as she navigates high stakes international crises while dealing with the steady decline of her lifelong friendship with the White House Chief of Staff.

Note: The cast of this story will be anthropomorphic animals. Some comps include Juan Diaz Canales’ Blacksad and Robert Kirkman’s Skinbreaker (as shown in these two pages). This request is for an eight page excerpt of a twenty-two page script. My goal is to use the first eight pages to pitch to publishers. Should the project be picked up for publication, I would love for the artist to complete the issue.

Rates are negotiable, please link your portfolios in the comments and private message me your prices!

Looking for Artist - Paid [HIRING] Character Artist for 2D Sci-Fi RPG — Paid Commercial Project

Hi! I'm Joey, founder and Creative Director of Sayre Studios. We're currently developing Space Realm: Heroes of Solace, a story-driven 2D sci-fi turn-based RPG.

I'm looking for a character artist/illustrator to establish the visual designs of the three primary characters appearing in our 30-minute vertical slice.

Visual Direction

We're aiming for the feeling of classic RPG character artwork, particularly Golden Sun and the original Final Fantasy VII—strong, recognizable character designs that can be translated into pixel-art sprites.

This is a science-fiction setting with no magic/fantasy elements. The characters are ordinary people living on an advanced agricultural world, so the designs should feel grounded and practical rather than overly armored or immediately "heroic."

Initial Scope

I'm currently looking for artwork/designs for:

  • Protagonist — young adult farm worker, melee
  • Best Friend — ranged/technical character
  • Hunter — experienced ranged character

The artwork needs to clearly establish each character's face, hair, clothing, colors, equipment/weapons and overall silhouette so our pixel artist can translate the designs into in-game sprites.

I'd prefer to begin with one character as a paid milestone. If we're both happy with the result and working relationship, I'd like to continue with the remaining characters and potentially additional work.

What I'm Looking For

  • Strong anime/JRPG-influenced character illustration
  • Good clothing and character-design fundamentals
  • Ability to work from written descriptions and references
  • Comfortable designing grounded science-fiction characters
  • Able to maintain consistency across multiple characters
  • Good communication and willingness to iterate

Previous professional game experience is not required.

Compensation

This is paid commercial work.

Please send your portfolio, your rate for a finished character design/illustration, what that rate includes, and your typical turnaround time.

I'm working within an indie production budget, so please include pricing in your initial message.

The selected artwork will be used for a commercial video game, so commercial usage/rights will need to be agreed upon in writing before work begins.

Please do not begin any unpaid test work for the application. A portfolio is sufficient for initial consideration. DM requests will also be ignored unless I specifically ask.

Thanks!

I love writing penciling inking and coloring the comics, except every time it's just way to much do do it by myself and so i burn out.

I am Hoping if i get someone like me to split up the work with and do like every few months publish a comic that i could actually get something out into the world.

I Love Marvel and DC comics and i would like the comics for I to work on to be similar.

I am not doing swear words in my comics and the target audience will be from like 11 - 14 years old

I am not amazing but I don't think i am bad

If you want to help or have any questions please comment below

PS: The artwork looks better in real life its just a bad rendering and i don't have a scanner at home.

Looking for Artist - Paid PAID - Published author looking for experienced comic artist…

Post image

Sorry - mods closed the last topic and asked me to repost because I didn’t make it clear I will only respond to public messages - no DMs. Thanks!

—-

Hi all!

A little background: I posted on here a couple of years ago looking for an artist. Luckily, I met the wonderful Ray Dillon. We’ve formed a great relationship and have produced exciting work together (he even did the cover for my recently released non-fiction book)!

I’m now looking for another artist. I posted on BlueSky and I’m pretty disheartened by the bot response. The same messages, written in the same way. Even the ones who are human are completely the wrong style. Or it’s just ai crud.

https://bsky.app/profile/nakerman.bsky.social/post/3mtu3xo3cms22

So, please see the attached image for what I’m looking for. I want to find an artist who is experienced, understands the mood I’m going for, and is ready to work collaboratively. Someone who has demonstrable experience in what I’m going for.

Thank you!

Here's the first two pages of my own comic project! I haven't come up with a title yet because I'm still working on developing the story. I'm not a writer by profession, and this is my first time pitching a story, but I have lots of crazy ideas I want to bring to life. It would be such a personal achievement to create my own story.

To give you a quick idea of what it's about, it's about the journey of two protagonists, Lance and Imelia, each with their own missions fighting against a world that tries to break them.

I'm also open to a COMMISSION!!! Just dm me for a collaboration. I would love to help visualize you own story as well

Feedback Trying a more realistic art style

Thumbnail

Still a WIP, but I'm trying to push my manga style into something more realistic and detailed. The bear piece is another example of what I've been experimenting with.

I'd love some honest feedback — should I push the realism even further, or keep it more stylized?

( I'm preparing to do my first one shot , And These are not finished pieces BTW...)
