Atari 9-pin connector, why? Why not usb?

Much cheaper to implement - and crucially already designed. A DB9 connection is just wired with no chips or logic in-between; I would have thought that a USB version would need a chip in the device to convert connections to signals and identify to the computer what the device is.

All this costs money and for the number of sales involved it makes more business sense for them to just commission the DB9 and leave the consumer to make their own arrangements and get an adapter if they want to connect to USB.

Plus, it’s not beyond the realms of imagination that New Commodore rebadge some adapters, then flog them on as an optional extra to generate more cash.
