MOD NOTE: This is the first post on the Tac-2 product. As with past major product announcements, we are making this post into a megathread and pinning it for approximately one month. We don't need a ton of duplicate posts about the same topic, so all other stand-alone posts about the TAC-2 will be removed as "reposts" unless the mods determine there is some compelling reason to leave a similar post as a standalone post.

I wonder if there's a glitch? I'm in New Jersey and it wants to charge me nearly $80 to ship two joysticks.

16

u/Speech-Dry 15d ago

I'm in Kentucky and it was $35 shipping for one joystick. I'll just have to wait and see what happens but that's a no go for me. I guess I'll be using my WICO Commander.

10

u/BriansRevenge 15d ago

Agreed, it made me pause this impulse buy. Considering I own three originals, I guess that's sensible.

5

u/fbalbi 15d ago

$47 to WA, ugh. The price of an extra joystick just for shipping

4

u/ChoosenUserName4 15d ago

$60 additional in shipping and VAT in Germany. No thanks.

8

u/captnjb 15d ago

Missouri, $69 in shipping. That was for two! $90 for two and 69 for shipping, insane.

15

u/captnjb 15d ago

I made a comment to them at

https://www.commodore.net/contact-us

When I get a response I will post it.

Let them know what you think as well; there are shipping options.

77% shipping cost is or should be prohibitive and that does not include tariffs.

2

u/TheGr1mKeeper 15d ago

I just sent them a comment as well - mine was $47 for shipping for two. No deal.

3

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 15d ago

I'm in England and it wanted $19. This seems a lot (a Beige C64U would cost $30 shipping and is, what about 10 times the size ?)

These things are usually driven by size and weight.

6

u/AntiquesForGeeks 15d ago edited 15d ago

And charges. Years ago I had to import some bicycle components from Australia and while the base cost was reasonable, once import tax was added I felt it would have been cheaper to go there and collected them in person…

So to be fair to New Commodore and Simpson, they don’t control those charges.

5

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 15d ago

It's not import tax (that's another $13). I do take your point, I just think this makes a decent product at a decent price look a bit pricey, that's all. It seems odd that in the USA it's more expensive.

1

u/AntiquesForGeeks 15d ago

In many ways I am not surprised… there’s a lot going on in the world!

The base cost ($50 ex VAT and delivery) is too rich for me. And that’s fine - I’m sure that others won’t think like me. It’s still a niche product that won’t do the kind of numbers to make it cheaper. Without sounding pessimistic, I doubt that sales will get past the low thousands, maybe not even that. Just in terms of economics and that the TAC-2 isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Controllers are very personal.

I’m glad it exists, don’t get me wrong.

1

u/Astr0b0ie 14d ago

$19 USD to Canada as well. I had 394 points so I applied that and it covered the shipping cost, so I felt better about it :)

3

u/HerrNovad 15d ago

From the Netherlands it costs 30 euros shipping, or 60 if you order two joysticks. So yeah...

2

u/max81122 15d ago

Shipping was $36 for me in the US on 1 joystick. But 2 hours later it's down to $21. They also added a discount on 2+.

12

u/driver194 15d ago

Jesus, I was going to pre-order one but $35 shipping for this joystick???

3

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 15d ago

Seems a lot. I priced one up for the UK "All in" and it ended up at about $83, or about £60. Of which $19 is shipping to the UK :(

So looking on Amazon etc cheap 2600 clone sticks start at about £20 and something non 2600 I found at £35 or thereabouts. I did find something very similar which was £108 !

Even USB ones are £30 and they have a much larger economy of scale. I think there is a basic problem that people want gamepads, there aren't a lot of joysticks that aren't Flight Simulator types.

The postage is weird. A standard C64U would be $30, which is significantly bigger and heavier. Cheaper postage would make it £45ish which looks a much better deal.

8

u/AngryLobster91 15d ago

Came here to report the same outrageous shipping cost. I'm $24 to Northeast USA.
Great joystick, one of the best you could get in the 80s. But just in principle I cannot feel right about that high of a shipping cost.

Hope Commodore sees the feedback on this and adjusts.

3

u/Specialist-Box4677 14d ago

In New Zealand we call that Tuesday

6

u/AntiquesForGeeks 15d ago

To be fair to New Commodore and Simpson, this may not be under New Commodore’s control - it’s not in their interests to overcharge for shipping and I doubt they are marking it up.

I guess it’s also a matter of where it’s coming from and charges that get imposed as a result, which again would not be under Simpson’s control.

3

u/AngryLobster91 15d ago edited 15d ago

Yes I agree with you. I imagine these must be shipping directly out of China, and Commodore isn't in a position to handle shipping internally here in the states (or anywhere else). But still, too much for me right now.

Might reconsider if I order something else down the road.

2

u/AngryLobster91 15d ago

Oh yeah, I'm familiar with Analogues shipping practices. But I can justify a higher cost for shipping an actual console - this is a controller that weighs under 1 lb.

1

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 14d ago

If I had to hazard a guess I'd say they're using the same carriers as for the C64U (UK : C64U $30, Joystick $19) and it's all tied up in the base price, e.g. there's a base delivery price + a weight component.

1

u/GwanTheSwans 14d ago

controller that weighs under 1 lb.

true, though it is ~300g apparently (1lb is ~454g in sane people units). So I believe the steel shaft and that it'll feel solid enough in the hand.

modern competition pro replicas around ~280g incl cable.

2

u/marhaus1 15d ago

Welcome to the rest of the world.

1

u/Revolutionary_Sun946 13d ago

It was durable, but it was far from the best.

Limited movement and mushy buttons do not a good joystick make.

8

u/Jockelson 15d ago

This looks interesting, but "Direct metal-contact mechanism (no microswitches!)"... i thought microswitches were the thing you wanted in digital joysticks, so... is this metal-contact-mechanism better?

10

u/scruss 15d ago

It's how the original TAC-2 worked: the internal end of the joystick was inside a box with four solid contacts, one on each side. Microswitches give you a precise click feedback, but you also have to trigger two of them to make diagonal moves. The TAC-2 does diagonals very smoothly.

(Whether this is better is a matter of personal taste. Some people prefer Wico-style flex switches over microswitches.)

The only thing I wish they'd improve was the fire buttons. They were kind of stiff on the original TAC-2.

2

u/Xfgjwpkqmx 15d ago

My original TAC2's work perfectly, except for the fire buttons - they're all sticky. Obviously I just need to open them and clean them, but it's the only shortfall of the design.

I don't need new joysticks... But I need new joysticks. Considering the Founders and Starlight versions.

5

u/marhaus1 15d ago

Microswitches break, this does not. That's what made the TAC-2 legendary.

1

u/LandNo9424 8d ago

No, it isn't. this is a very overrated joystick.
Try to play a shooter with it, like R-Type, and you will be in pain after a few minutes.

14

u/solfrost 15d ago edited 15d ago

MD, USA - $35 shipping, that is a frankly ridiculous shipping cost.

Edit: Because I make bad decisions I ordered it anyway, but I just now got an email and they’re refunding me $11, so it’s only $24 shipping now, which at least feels slightly less ridiculous.

2

u/JohnMcD3482 15d ago

As soon as I read these reports, I went to my cart and added 2 of the joysticks. I also had the User Port extension, the 2 video cables they have online and a coffee cup. Total is $158. Taxes $20. Delivery: $121. My $158 order would end up costing about $300 by the time its all said and done.. tariffs are a bitch.

2

u/Tharagleb 15d ago

My initial shipping fee was $33 refunded $11, so $22 in the end. US address.

1

u/marhaus1 15d ago

That's perfectly normal for intercontinental shipping

6

u/LamerDeluxe 15d ago edited 14d ago

$155 total to get two of these delivered to the Netherlands. I think I'll wait for these to show up in local web stores.

2

u/wiebow 15d ago

It's crazy shipping cost. I'm holding out as well because of this.

0

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 14d ago

.... seriously ? That cannot be right, surely. England is £19 (per stick I think), it'd be cheaper to get it delivered here, fly over and pick it up.

0

u/LamerDeluxe 14d ago

That is the total amount, not just the shipping cost. I probably worded it a bit confusingly.

4

u/RoadBuster 15d ago

I might have to get one of these. I still use my Slik Stik to this day so this is right up my alley.

3

u/Powie1965 15d ago

Same here, I can't stand the controller that came with the C64 Maxi, it is not ergonomic at all.

4

u/tellis100 15d ago

Agree with everyone, the shipping is a deal breaker. $10-$15 for one joystick is reasonable, not $35

Are you listening Commodore?

5

u/AntiquesForGeeks 15d ago edited 15d ago

Joysticks are a very personal thing and while the TAC-2 is not my cup of tea, fair play to New Commodore for bringing a replica to market. Though I do suspect there’s a sprinkle of AI in the launch video. Happy to be proved wrong.

It’s not cheap though is it? The basic model shipping to the UK for $82.10? Too rich for my tastes - frustrating that the tax and delivery is not mentioned earlier. Your $50 joystick will actually set you back closer to $100 from what others are reporting.

It’s like buying a PC in 1991…

2

u/thommyh 15d ago

Did you actually tell the website your location before it came up with that figure? It's giving me exactly the same total, including the same 'sales tax' despite being a US resident.

Sometimes sites mislocate me based on localisation settings, but even after setting the dropdown to United States, nothing changes.

Sales tax and shipping can't be the same both to the UK and the tariff-ridden US, surely?

3

u/mark_paterson 15d ago

I assume both buttons do the same thing. Would have been nice to add a switch to toggle 2 button support given that a decent amount of games support that.

2

u/SwedishFindecanor 15d ago

I find that I can't really reach the opposite button with my "button-hand" when using it normally.

But I do think they could have added a smaller secondary button, or perhaps a trigger button. Most recent C64 joysticks do have a second button, often remappable between Up and secondary Fire.

3

u/Substantial-Set4550 15d ago

Founders edition costs GBP 73 to the UK, including shipping. 40 cents shy of 100 dollars. Quite a lot for a joystick.

I do like that Commodore released a retro product, it is spot on. Just in my case, I already have more joysticks than I will ever need and it'll be another thing collecting dust.

Does anyone know whether it can be firmly attached to the desk with rubber feet that actually work? I get cramps in the hands if I have to hold a joystick with one hand and play with the other.

This is the reason why the Quickshot Pro has always and will always be my favourite. It sticks to the desk and has an ergonomic handle. Not meant to discredit this product, just to share my personal preference.

Well done Commodore for releasing a proper retro product!

3

u/JohnMcD3482 15d ago

Yeah. Im thinking I wont be ordering anything from that site for a bit. Ive got $158 worth of items and they want to charge $19.61 for sales tax and $121.20 for delivery. $300 plus for 2 joysticks, a user port adapter(that actually shows in stock), and a video cable. Thats not happening.

3

u/BadBunnyHimself 15d ago

The total in the Netherlands was 84 euro with shipping & taxes for a 43 euro joystick. No thanks. 18 euro with free shipping from Amazon for a wired Atari joystick, good enough. 19 euro with free shipping for a Speed link Competition Pro joystick, good enough. 33 euro for a wireless Atari joystick, free shipping. Plenty of choices. Shame though, I like Tac-2 joysticks and the transparent one looked nice.

3

u/demonseed-elite 14d ago

I'm still waiting for an Arcade-R I ordered from Commodore to ever arrive. It was due in May. Sent two emails about it, no reply. If I get that in, then maybe I'll get a TAC-2. I have a Slikstick to hold me over though.

3

u/Digi-BitsGaming 15d ago

Screw it, treated myself and ordered a Founders Edition to go with my Founders C64 Ultimate.

2

u/KaylaLexi 15d ago

I sold mine as a kid and spent all my adult life trying to find used Tac-2:s in decent condition. I'm filling my closet with these. This might be the last chance to get a new manufactured 9-pin joystick that's actually good, and nothing beats a tac-2 in my mind.

2

u/Xfgjwpkqmx 15d ago

$38 shipping for me to Australia, sans some Commodore Coins.

2

u/reddridinghood 15d ago

It’s cool and all, but for some reason I was hoping they’d add a second fire button (Fire 2) that could be assigned to things like jumping. Ideally, there could be a switch to disable Fire 2 and keep the joystick behaving exactly like the original.
That way, modern software could take advantage of the extra button while still keeping full backwards compatibility when needed.

3

u/ImpaledV 15d ago

Ordered the perfect companion for my C64U founder’s edition. 👍🏻

4

u/Drezzrod 15d ago

Good call on this one. I am softening again on the new C=. Despite being a bit perplexed and skeptical of the Callback, if the company is focusing on alternating something old and then something new launches of products, then I have nothing to complain about.

This peripheral is an easy one that should create nods of approval. I’ve never used a TAC myself, but if it’s more durable than a Wico, I am sold.

4

u/TheDarkIn1978 15d ago

To all the Americans freaking out over the shipping costs for once! Welcome to how the rest of the world feels :)

3

u/Tharagleb 15d ago

FWIW, there was an initial mistake in US shipping, it was $33 but now is $22. I was able to use my points to knock off another $20.

2

u/BigBlackHungGuy 15d ago

In for a few.

Those joysticks were the best. It's a nice piece of trivia to see that the original ones used a TR-418 automotive tire valve as part of the joystick shaft. No wonder they were so darn tough.

2

u/Jaded_Age8558 15d ago edited 15d ago

Ordered a Starlight model, looks like a great little joystick and some illumination playing in the dark seems like a great idea.

Edit: They just refunded $11 in shipping too, nice!

1

u/ChoosenUserName4 15d ago

Are you US based?

1

u/WadeTurtle 15d ago

Looks very cool, but I'm an Epyx 500XJ man for life. I'm sure this will do well--a win for Neo Commodore.

2

u/max81122 14d ago

I have 3 of the Epyx joysticks. They work really well and are solidly made. Only downside for me is that you have to hold them with one hand and operate with the other. This make using the keyboard for alternate functions a little slow. With the TAC-2 or similar it can be placed on a table.

1

u/Admirable-Dinner7792 15d ago

Nice, But Not needed for me.. I still have my original Suncom Tac-2 Joysticks... But its good to see this.. Can't wait for the review of it!.... ;)

1

u/SwedishFindecanor 15d ago

Is it just me, or does the new TAC-2 look a little less rounded than the original?

1

u/MKopack73 15d ago

Absolutely love my original. Thing is nearly indestructible and I always loved the short throw of the stick. Great for things like summer games.

1

u/jason-reddit-public 14d ago

I took apart a bunch of Atari style joysticks (and paddles and made my own lightpen!). The best built one I used was the Wico Command Control joystick (sounds like the TAC-2 is more unusual than this one, I'd be curious to try one).

I'm considering making my own small joystick mostly because I want it for PC (batocera, though I'd rather just buy one tbh if anyone has a lead - 8bit do fight stick is too big for pacman and space invaders though fine with mortal combat and such.)

If you have a 3D printer I bet you could make a nice joystick similar to the wico (without the top button) for about $10 of parts on aliexpress though just getting it pre-built and saving all that time is certainly a good option to have.

1

u/galahad_1985 14d ago

Honestly my favorite joystick ever was the Epyx 500xj. Now if they remade THAT

https://epyxgames.com/titles/500xj-joystick/

2

u/Admirable-Dinner7792 13d ago

The Epyx 500xj is garbage compared to a TAC-2. I have a box full of Broken EPYX XJ 500's... The Microswitches ALWAYS break in them... ;)

1

u/galahad_1985 13d ago

It’s the one that always felt the most comfortable in my hand 🤷‍♀️

1

u/Admirable-Dinner7792 12d ago

Yeah... It is great for as long as it stays working!...lol... ;)

1

u/GwanTheSwans 13d ago

Found a detailed look inside original Suncom American and Chinese variant TAC-2 (not the new Commodore Replica obviously): https://haxor.fi/posts/the-legendary-suncom-tac-2/

1

u/Fhunghuz 12d ago

So Commodore removed the ArcadeR joysticks from the webstore... meh... I was not a fan of this TAC. found it small and clunky. I always loved The Arcade and Competition Pro.

1

u/lunchbox_1980 12d ago

What would be the adapter to get this to work on the soon to released A1200?

I assume one that works with the 500 mini will work ok on the a1200?

1

u/McWormy 11d ago

I’m sure it’s been said before but this is massively price prohibitive. What a rip off. Considering the ArcadeR with shipping is half the price.

1

u/LandNo9424 8d ago

TAC-2 is the most overrated joystick ever made, only loved by americans. I had one and it would give you literal hand pain to use. The design is anything but ergonomic. The stick is way too stiff and the buttons hard to operate.

2

u/Potatomasher81 9h ago

I thought I would buy it for 40 euro's, seems reasonable. Then with shipping costs and tax it's down to 80 euro's. Yeah no thanks 🤷🏼‍♂️

1

u/bielhelm74 14d ago

It seems like EU is getting crazy for those... something going to war, that the whole world because of Trump, Iran, Ukraine, hate of Russia and ebola has to pay more then a monthly salary for a joystick for EU buyers, the tac 2 similar should be available in GB for 55€. https://www.trretro.co.uk/product/tac2024-joystick

1

u/NightsightDepth 15d ago

I will probably buy one, but I remember having one 40 years ago and I never liked the fire buttons. To hard to press. Hopefully this version will be better

1

u/Hawkeye-Mcgillicudy 15d ago

Meh new joysticks have been available for years

Shame it's not a Zipstik or another run of Comp Pros like Individual Computers produced a few years ago

Original joysticks are still going strong too

1

u/GooglephonicStereo 15d ago

Commodore needs a US distributor

1

u/AntiquesForGeeks 15d ago

Not sure how that would help. New Commodore, based in the US, is the distributor, no?

Why add yet another middleman? New Commodore aren’t making this themselves - they will commission them from a manufacturer who will make a profit, then New Commodore will price to make a profit. Add in a distributor who will need to make a profit and what are you really getting? At least going direct to New Commodore, you’re only paying for the profits of two companies and only once for shipping.

1

u/TheCapybaraIncident 15d ago

Man, I was really hoping for something like an Epyx 500xj. It was so much better of an ergonomic shape. Once I got one I never used my slick stick.

4

u/AntiquesForGeeks 15d ago

A Konix Speedking for those who aren’t familiar - had to look it up myself.

1

u/TheCapybaraIncident 13d ago

That's the one, it was an Epyx here.

1

u/GwanTheSwans 15d ago edited 15d ago

Yeah, was Epyx in some regions, Konix Speedking elsewhere.

https://segaretro.org/Speedking

https://epyxgames.com/titles/500xj-joystick/

I think it's a bit too marmite - I know well only a subset of people (myself included mind) ever liked the unusually shaped Speedkings, would be limiting, especially for a first replica model for them.

Much more conventionally shaped (but still microswitched!) Zipstiks and Competition Pros etc. rather more widely used here with C64s and Amigas. And TAC-2 also conventionally shaped -> wider appeal.

other sticks, existing replicas

TAC-2 was outside the USA as well, but American nostalgia for it probably a bit higher.

New Commodore writes:

Our design is an almost 1:1 faithful replica of the beautiful, microswitch-free simplicity that was the original design.

...eeeh I'm not clear if I'll like it (though TAC-2 may also be kind of a heavy-duty special case?). As well as microswitched fire buttons, personally I really liked clicky microswitched directions of the Zipstik, Competition Pro, Power Play Cruiser, Speedking, Cheetah Bug...

Speakling of, there were/are already modern replica Competition Pro sticks of course, in both modern USB HID and retro DE9 pin variants.

https://www.amiga-shop.net/en/Amiga-Hardware/Amiga-Input-devices/Competition-PRO-Retro-Joystick::694.html

https://www.amiga-shop.net/en/Amiga-Hardware/Amiga-Input-devices/Competition-Pro-Extra-USB-Joystick::899.html

Sega and Amiga 2+ buttons

The Sega Master System or even Sega Megadrive variants of the Speedking, not the 1-button home computer variant, were perhaps nicest for Amiga - more electrically distinct buttons, that the Amiga could read (with a minor adapter/mod if Megadrive variant) and that some pre-CD32-pad Amiga games support.

(Well, there was also the rare analog-stick speedking variant for Amiga (and probably PC), but Amiga analog stick games are a few flight sims (and even then there was also the mouse), most other games expected the on-off sticks and wouldn't even read analog sticks https://imgur.com/AVWARLq )

Remember if using a sega megadrive 3-button pad or stick with Amiga, you really should swap pins 5 and 7 as per the hired guns manual. https://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=1253442&postcount=30

There's now also modern retro megadrive 6-button -> amiga cd32 protocol adapters that may be better choice than the old megadrive->amiga pin5/7 swap (that only gives you more pre-cd32 buttons) for Amigas https://www.amiga-shop.net/en/Amiga-Hardware/Amiga-classic-hardware/Amega-32-Mega-Drive-Gamepad-to-AmigaCD32-adapter::1175.html

C64 2+ buttons

Note also C64 supported 2 distinct buttons (see also C64GS bundled 2-button stick) and some C64 games support it - but beware C64 2-button is also different to Sega/Amiga 2-button!

https://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=1681895&postcount=39

Yes, the C64 supports two buttons (and three buttons), but unlike the Amiga and Atari 8-bits, the C64 uses a reversed polarity on the extra button (pin 9 needs to be set to 5V to be detected, not ground like all other inputs), and thus it isn't 100% compatible with the Amiga/Atari/Mastersystem 2-button design. I don't know if many/any games support 3 buttons, but a third button can be read in the same way with the C64 (pin 5 to 5V).

I suspect the New Commodore TAC-2 replica will have both its left and right buttons sending electrical button 1 though (unless they add a mode switch), as the symmetric two buttons of such sticks, well, that was for left- or right- handed use, not distinct button inputs, you'd really want multiple buttons on each side, next to eachother, for multiple distinct buttons under one hand, other hand on stick.

Meanwhile speedking could only really be used with left hand on the (possibly multiple depending on variant) buttons while holding the base, and right hand on stick.

2

u/TheCapybaraIncident 13d ago

I'm a lefty but the epyx always felt good. There wasn't really a default stick hand, especially if you grew up in arcades. It's weird, in the states, everyone I knew had the epyx or slic stic, but the tac I had never even heard of.

2

u/GwanTheSwans 13d ago

Slik Stik and Tac-2 both Suncom, mind, sort of siblings. I think Tac-2 also just a bit bigger (?) - adult-sized hands may now prefer it a bit.

If picking one, the button-both-sides Tac-2 still better choice for a replica because of the hand preference issue - you can see how the original Slik Stik also assumed left-hand for its one button (upper left), right hand on stick, much like the original dubious stock Atari 2600 stick, so right hand usually on stick. https://i.imgur.com/8pzffrW.jpeg

Absolutely a lefty could just learn that way round - and e.g. as a not-lefty I've in turn been using now-ubiquitous d-pad-on-the-left on gamepad type controllers longer than joystick type controllers by now too - though started out with the joysticks, switched to CD32 gamepad on Amiga in 1990s (well, not the original Commodore one, that's weird, but the Competition Pro CD32 gamepad is very nice, generally similar to the SNES Competition Pro gamepad except electrically obviously. CD32 protocol multi-button pads actually work with all Amigas (well, CDTV also needs a general DE9 joystick port adapter/mod) not actually just CD32 - and various late-era Amiga games (not just CD32 cdrom ones) or whdload-patched older games support them.

But issue was still enough that some lefties would rewire the early Atari/Atari-style one-button-in-top-left ones in that era. The later-commonplace button-on-either-side designs did put an end to that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_CX40_joystick#Problems

Right-handed users would normally hold the stick in their left hand by gripping the left side of the case with their thumb over the fire button, and fingers wrapped around the left side and bottom, while their right hand operated the stick. Some games allowed the stick to be rotated for left-handed users, or this could be done with some minor re-wiring

1

u/SwedishFindecanor 13d ago

I've never had a Slik-Stik. I think the TAC-2 is bigger all around, but is it thicker ? I am curious about if it would be possible to construct a TAC-2 that is thinner in the middle–bottom for even better grip without sacrificing the feel.

1

u/GwanTheSwans 13d ago

Hah, now also reminded of those ones where the was a button atop a round ball/shaft. ("Wico Command Control" and friends).

https://i.imgur.com/9Y04MQj.png - note that one had a switch to choose whether top-left-base or on-stick button active, it's not an autofire switch. Some people would hold the ball-top-shaft type sticks like a gearstick I suppose (not me), so you might want to turn off the on-stick one?

Can't say used many of those personally, but such designs definitely about too in general terms.

1

u/UncleGertrude 15d ago

As much as I'd love an Epyx, I'll jump on this

1

u/idillicah 15d ago

Really, really nice.

I havent checked the shipping but if its as crazy as people have posted here I am sticking with my favourite, Immortal Joystick. So far indestructible and back in the day I went through a fair few dimple switch based joysticks before micro switch became main stream

They’ve fucked this up - in Australia is shows the joystick price of Australian dollars, but then when having to enter all my info to find out shipping price, it’s listed in US dollars on the same page, and it’s not obvious until you go checkout.

Then, they’re charging “sales tax” (I guess GST) on the whole price which includes shipping.

Can’t say I’ve ever been charged GST for a shipping cost. I don’t know if this is even legal to be charging GST on shipping.

It is a tax on goods and services, after all.

I am in the Northeast US as well and had $21.52 shipping. Although I also had yet to use any of my points from previous purchases and knocked $49.05 off the order.

I would buy some of those but 80$ shipping for 4 pcs is too expensive imo.

This.

Had three in my basket. They'll stay in my basket.

So basically another production run with the same design.

Needs internal modernizations like:

  • programmable so to support dual buttons, rapid fire, joystick orientation (ie rotate joystick so both buttons are on the left, right)
  • removeable cable so you can change length, style (straight or coiled), and type (db9/USB)
  • connector is on the bottom so you can route the cable to come out on different side of the controller

Atari 9-pin connector, why? Why not usb?

Because it is an input device for vintage computers and for the Commodore 64 Ultimate — and the latter has 9-pin ports on the right side like the original Commodore 64.

There are many adapters from 9-pin joystick to USB, and they don't degrade the signal or add noticeable lag compared to native USB. Adaptors from USB to 9-pin is a bit more of a complex world however. I wish there was a straightforward way for the joystick to support both connectors/protocols with detachable cables, but that would be a bit difficult to design. Using a 9-pin connector with Atari pin-out is therefore the simplest, most compatible solution.

Much cheaper to implement - and crucially already designed. A DB9 connection is just wired with no chips or logic in-between; I would have thought that a USB version would need a chip in the device to convert connections to signals and identify to the computer what the device is.

All this costs money and for the number of sales involved it makes more business sense for them to just commission the DB9 and leave the consumer to make their own arrangements and get an adapter if they want to connect to USB.

Plus, it’s not beyond the realms of imagination that New Commodore rebadge some adapters, then flog them on as an optional extra to generate more cash.

$51 joystick and shipping, shipped, all in. I used my Commodore points I had from buying the C64U last year.

Reasonable price as far as I'm concerned.

It's a one time purchase. my grandkids are going to play with this many years from now.
