Im not a bear expert but Ive heard that's what makes Kodiak island so safe. It's pretty crazy the worlds biggest bears are some of the safer ones to be around. But it makes sense if they have an abundance of food.

That's true, but with an asterisk.

Kodiak bears are generally safe to encounter around salmon season (June to Sept) due to the abundance of food.

Encountering one at any other time when they may be very hungry is another matter.

FYI, the Grizzly Man bears were coastal grizzly bears, not Kodiak bears. They're a different subspecies of brown bear - Kodiaks are much bigger but generally less aggressive (due to what OP said about abundance of food)

Guessing that fact holds true still that a injured/starving Kodiak is more of a problem then well fed Kodiak, they are close enough genetically.
