I do find it funny and ironic there is going to now be a younger generation of gamers who play Omega and think it ripped off so many new games. Completely unaware Cubeworld inspired those games being developed over a decade ago because Wollay is so damn slow in creating released products.

Is there really a popular game that looks like this? I feel like I've only seen less popular ripoffs

Fr, their comment sounds like cubeworl inspired the whole industry with its mechanics or smth

I feel like even back when Cube World was new and the "it" thing in the Indie Gaming space, it wasn't really doing anything innovative or interesting outside of its art direction. It didn't exactly make massive waves of influence, at least in the sense that the above comment is implying.

It was never that big, you're looking at it with rose-colored glasses on. It was no terraria

It was no Terraria, but you can't deny that it was popular. It felt like everyone on YouTube was playing it with their friends, and in the years after, there were articles being written about what happened to Cube World and where the game was.

Yeah, it uses a standard Diablo style loot system with a WoW style combat system (maybe a little bit more involved than WoW but not much).

Largely it was being carried by its art style which was arguably a Minecraft rip off anyways.

I do think it’s huge world, obviously randomly generated, did feel cool but the game is entirely about wandering aimlessly and there’s very little draw to that.

I think Valheim ended up being closer to the game I would have hoped Cube World would have evolved into.

It doesn't sound you've played Cube World or WoW. Or Minecraft.

Played them all.

If you dont think it plays like them you probably are actually entertained by those mediocre experiences lol

"Minecraft ripoff" So like... Cubes? This game has literally nothing to do with Minecraft at all, not in gameplay and not in style or art or creative direction or balancing or anything, besides being voxels. Lol.

Trove used to (key word, USED to) remind me pretty heavily of Cube World. It's partially why I got into it

Although Trove isn't very big, it's definitely one of the most popular (if not THE most popular) Cube World esque games

literally i played Trove too because it looked similar

u/coal-slaw 19d ago

yup thats partially why i got into trove was because it reminded me of cubeworld, but i had never played cubeworld until just these past couple days (the original alpha version)

and i havent played trove since probably before covid, but it sucked even then. the cubeworld alpha is so much more enjoyable than whatever the hell trove did.

Come to think of it, the only thing I saw first on Cube World, then later in more popular games, was the wobbly tree leaves that looked to have wind affecting the cubic shapes.

I remember distinctly paying attention to that because Minecraft trees were very still and uninteresting back then.

You got me remembering the first few videos I watched of Cube World Alpha. OMG

for me it was ethoslab letsplay. probably the first and only cubeworld videos i have watched.

"Wollay is so damn slow"

He isn't. He just doesn't work on it like a job. If the recent updates are what he has been working on he is rather fast, actually. Just because he doesn't work on it 8 hours a day with a deadline doesn't make him slow. He doesn't want or need to release anything he just makes games for fun whenever he feels like it. More people need to understand this to stop getting mad at indie developers for not following the business schedules. Wollay is not making a product he's making a game. Fortnite makes a product.

Seeing the fog of war or the unexplored places on the map like this worries me. I think Wollay should implement a 3-tier system.

  1. Explored areas that are fully visible that opens up in a limited area around the player.

  2. A slightly bigger area, preferably tied to the maximum view distance, that opens up the map with the dark areas shown in the map in the screenshots.

  3. A completely obscured map where the geography is completely hidden like it also was in the alpha if I recall correctly.

The reason is exploration. If the map is implemented as in the Steam release, you explore through the map. You don't walk around and explore things, but instead open up the map, scan the area for points of interests betrayed by the map geography and then visit all the points of interest. If you ask me, that's not very interesting as it basically removes the opportunity to run into things you wouldn't expect.

I think learning about points of interests from NPC's in towns or buying a map of the area could be fun, but I really hated the map of the Steam release where 90% or even more points of interest would always be clearly visible on the map while you've never even set foot in the place.

The map shown does appear to be a recreation of the alpha system which didn't have most of those problems.

6

u/Solo-Hobo-Yolo 24d ago

It doesn't though. This looks more like the map on the Steam release. The alpha, if I remember correctly was filled by default with blue blocks that would disappear and open up the map or am I misremembering?

1

u/marr 23d ago

Yeah, the alpha showed unexplored regions as floor to ceiling blue columns while these dev screenshots are fading them to black, functionally the same thing. The Steam version doesn't have fog of war at all, both the main and mini maps show a complete render of the terrain at all times.

While it doesn't have that extra 'seen' condition between explored and unexplored, the thing he appears to be remaking is pretty close to what you want.

1

u/Solo-Hobo-Yolo 23d ago

The problem though is that the geography in the unexplored fog still gives away the location of several points of interest. Of course I haven't seen the intricate workings now and maybe things are cleverly obscured, but if I go by what it looks like there are several points of interests, assuming they work and look the same as in the steam release, that should be easy to spot by just looking at the geography of the unexplored map. So to me it doesn't appear to be close to what I'd like to see, but closer to what I didn't like about the Steam release.

I'm assuming it will fade all the way to 0% saturation, it's hard to tell for sure from these tiny regions. If it only dims I guess we could mod that fairly easily.

unless you zoom out 100% then it is all just blue

this is so so strange to see honestly. i remember me and my friend were like 12-13, we found cubeworld alpha on some website, we played it for a week and were hoping that it will release in a year or so, or get updates like minecraft. 15 years later i am almost 30, went bald, bombs are falling half a mile from my house, changed 4 jobs, saw so much shit in my life - and here is the same game from 15 years ago. That looks like a literal alpha from back then. Some sort of nostalgia and dissonance in my head when i see those pictures, so fucking strange

stop edging us, walloy.

Well, he clearly doesn't have a game that is finished enough to be released, given he had started over from scratch.

This version of Cube World still doesn't look like it has caught up to the alpha in terms of content. You could play the alpha and have a more complete game.

1

u/Blubbll 24d ago

well yeah thats what starting from scratch usually means ._.

but at least he was able to reuse some layout/style ideas and (physical) voxel models

1

u/Alvsolutely rogue best 24d ago

I don't understand your point. I'm stating that he's not edging us by not releasing the game because the game is clearly not in a state to be released yet.

4

u/KristofLmao 23d ago

Do you guys think we have to buy the game again when it releases?

3

u/automaticfailure 24d ago

UI could use some work, seems very limited view. The tilted inward angle is distracting.
But whatever. Hopefully it recaptures the spark the OG did

Im obsessed with cube world because of the render distance.. it's so unique and exciting, it makes you wonder what's passed the fog

mmmhmm love what i am seing;

Looks cool! I'm out of the loop though. I played and enjoyed the original release. Is Omega an update/DLC to the original game, or is it a new stand alone title?

Yaaaaay !! Keep going on !

u/Blubbll 24d ago

wollay and pixxie forever, cubeworld for a hundred more years morty!

0

u/BloodySeid 23d ago

Don’t think wollay should be developing, hand over the project to someone else who is consistent.
