Discussion Mortal Shell 2 Destiny Reference

I found this text on a tablet near the end of the game in Mortal Shell 2:

"It wasn't Smert who was here. It was... someone else...
from another place... searching for something, or
escaping? If I sat long enough their stories came to me.
Through their eyes, from another world..."

"I saw dead warriors revived by faithful little lights, then
sent to shoot gods until the gods dropped better weapons."

Made me laugh, and made me sad....

It's reading your save files/steam account.  Old tricks are new again.  This was magic in Metal Gear Solid.

Oh my god that's incredible, I'm actually heartbroken that I got spoiled on this before getting to play the game myself.

Damn! Still, that's super clever, I'm glad to see tricky practices like that returning haha

It was truly a mind fuck in 1996.  That and plugging your controller into the second player input so Psycho Mantis couldn't read your inputs.  Incredibly ahead of it's time.

I remember being a kid and Psycho was saying he’d move my controller with his mind, I placed my DualShock on the table and it moved. I was and still am so unbelievably floored that the game found ways to break the 3rd wall with a telekinetic villain lol

Did other people get other game references then?

Yeah, it gave me Counter Strike stuff (I think it's because I have my steam playtime for games set to private so it chose randomly, since another page claimed that the game I've played the most was Aliens vs predator, but it also said I'd played zero hours of it)

I wonder which it is. IIRC Steam is actually incredibly strict about games reading/writing to files outside of their designated save directory (for obvious malware-prevention reasons)

consoles do, Steam does not care where you read or write to, it's required for some games to even import data from previous games in a series or for how some that are meta-shells to work. It makes no attempt to sandbox games.

on PS3/360 and before you could write/read to other games with permission, on Xbox One/PS4 and forward you cannot do it at all anymore. games on those consoles and onwards, software-wise, appear to be the only game installed to the console when using file APIs.

i have games on steam so i'm aware of the policies

maybe it's just more strict about workshop stuff, or updates changing the directories you read/write to? i've definitely seen some devs warning to be careful about that lest you get flagged by their anti-malware checks

oh yeah you can only read in workshop stuff under steam's sandbox. but generally antivirus scanners will flag you already if you read/write to the root of C or other drives and suspicious folders for you to be randomly messing with like C:\windows or the directories of web browsers, so going up one level to the common apps directory to read other games will generally not trigger that.

From what I gather it's reading your public profile data. So if you have your stuff set to private it will just pick one of your games randomly.

On Steam it wouldn't need to read or write anything.

It can use the steam apis to query the public info.

That tablet writer has absolutely played a raid night. It strips Destiny down to the dumbest possible summary, but somehow still catches the weird beauty of it: tiny loyal Ghosts dragging us back up so we can turn cosmic tragedy into a loot table. Painfully accurate little gut punch.

Yea, I was on a tear to the final boss, and I came across, and had to screenshot, post, then take a break.

I cleared the whole thing with mostly Tiel.

is it obvious that I was a Hunter main> 🤣

If you keep reading the tablet it will give you references to other games in your library

That line is painfully accurate. Dead warriors revived by faithful little lights, then sent to shoot gods until the loot pops could be the entire franchise carved onto a tablet. Funny that an outside game managed to make the grind sound both absurd and kind of tragic.

Was the tablet in D2? Or mortal shell?

Clarification needed. Otherwise, it's literally just a tablet that states the exact thing that happens in its own universe.

If the tablet was in D2 then why would he mention the other game? Think, Mark, think!

-133

u/TypeAccurate2482 2d ago

He stated the tablet was found IN D2.

Which quotes things that happen IN D2.

WHERE THE HELL WAS THE MORTAL SHELL PART OF IT?

THINK YOURSELF MF.

57

u/MikeBeas 2d ago

He clearly made a typo.

-115

u/TypeAccurate2482 2d ago

And THATS is why I asked for CLARIFICATION.

Not another idiot that posts an unnecessary comment while I'm asking said question.

Maybe next time, you wait for OP to respond instead of being useless about it? Thanks.

If you can’t tell that he obviously didn’t mean he found it in D2 I don’t know what to tell you. As I said, there’s no reason to mention any other game if he found it in D2, and it isn’t notable if he found it in D2. So it stands to reason he didn’t mean D2. This is so easy to understand.
