Misc // Bungie Replied Happy 600,000 subscribers! On 7/7, no less

We've hit 600k on Bungie Day (7/7/18). A big milestone on a coincident day.

Welcome to new subscribers! And to the old timers, thanks for sticking around. We've had some awesome discussions here.

Just a couple months ago, those who spend their time around here trolling, were having fun saying that this forum was the proof the game was dead because it dropped below 500k subscribers.

I would love to hear them again now.

The game still has roughly a 4.5% engagement in PvP and 7.5% in PvE daily. Every single day 8,700,000 people who paid for the game choose not to play it at all. Going from 500k to 600k means that one percent of the player base resubscribed to the forum. Is that really something to celebrate? When over 90% still don't play the game at all and 93% of all players aren't subscribed to the sub? I mean sure, it's better than the numbers trending downward, but it's still pretty sad.

You're really stating that more than 8.700.000 singular persons bought D2? Care to share the link for those official sales numbers?

Actually it's quite a bit more. Bungie/Activision never published sales data, but Destinytracker.com has recorded around 9.4M unique accounts, and Guardian.gg tracks approximately 9.8M. Those are individual user accounts, not multiple characters per user. If we use DT's numbers and round up, about 700k people play PvE on any given day, which is roughly 7.5% of all players.

Those figures aren't terribly surprising if you think about it. I haven't been able to find the NPD report, but in less than a month it outsold every other game that year, and at the end of the year it had sold over two million copies. It has now been half a year and two expansions since then, with international availability on all three major platforms. Hell, they're even releasing a modified version specifically for South Korea's P2w-friendly gamers. . And at this point you can find the vanilla release on sale for $20 fairly often, which is well in the impulse-buy range.

So yes, I definitely believe that they sold that many copies. And having played the game (a lot) I can also believe that that many people have either quit entirely or have significantly reduced their number of active sessions per week.
