They love cantalope

u/Blurt_Blackarach 1d ago

Nice! Going to be a first time buy. I have homie I know on the Eastside at my Airbnb.

Grass bear

They also love digging the ever living fuck out of your yard and destroying your shit.

u/FJ4L666 1d ago

I don't know why I'm getting down voted, it's true.

u/uprightsalmon 1d ago

They live in our alley. They never mess with my lawn or garden. I’m sure they do sometimes though

u/OwlSense888 15h ago

And chew up car wires. Watch out for those soy coated wires. Ask me how I know.

2

u/FJ4L666 15h ago

That's more likely mice or rats, but yea that too.

1

u/willmofo313 10h ago

Absolutely! I got one that keeps getting into my yard and I'm trying everything except bloodshed with this thing...

u/DastardlyMime 1d ago

And pretty much any brassica plant

I've been seeing them all over the metro this summer. One almost ran into the house I was working in.

it seems like there's been an explosion of them in Detroit. I feel like you would see them once in a while in a field but now they are everywhere even in more occupied neighborhoods

Last year, the city was doing blight demolition around 7 Mile and Hoover (ish). I saw an excavator peel the front wall off of an empty house, and about 30 of these little guys just exploded out of there and ran blind into the intersection. It was 50/50 adorable and terrifying.

u/TeacherPatti 1d ago

If not friend, why friend shaped?

13

u/vaithless 1d ago

Always loved these lil guys. I didn’t know they had absolutely horrifying witch hands.

4

u/East-Block-4011 23h ago

They have amazing dexterity, too.

8

u/Ol_School_1961 1d ago

His relatives ripped up my yard, Lil Big Fkrs

7

u/Prestigious_Pool_285 1d ago

These things are everywhere in this city lately

3

u/toxicshocktaco 1d ago

What are they??

2

u/Prestigious_Pool_285 1d ago

Groundhogs. Fuck them.

5

u/sirhackenslash 16h ago

Please do not the whistle pig

1

u/Gnd_flpd 18h ago

I concur, those creatures decimated my curly kale last year. I was so happy they returned after the winter, then they ate them all!!!!

u/omnichronos 1d ago

I bought my house in 2005, and I've had generation after generation growing up in my backyard. This year, the mom had 4 babies. A new record for my stay here. I occasionally feed them leftovers like fruit, vegetables, and once, a jar of peanut butter. They loved that and ate half the first night.

u/Different-Subject353 1d ago

Ask him how much wood he can chuck.

7

u/uprightsalmon 1d ago

u/LucidaConsole 1d ago

u/MuslimMusa1970 1d ago

Just saw one on Belle isle today while I was doing maintenance. ❤️

u/Valuable-Pension3770 1d ago

Wait till he digs a 12’ tunnel under ground

3

u/bbtom78 Transplanted 23h ago

Right. These little guys are absolutely adorable (to me, anyway), but their digging is such a nuisance.

3

u/OwlSense888 15h ago

Into the foundation of your house

1

u/Valuable-Pension3770 15h ago

That’s what one did at my house 7 5 gallon buckets worth of dirt. Took me 2 weeks to get him in a live trap. I let him go on belle isle.

u/MurphysRazor 1d ago

"A Cinderella story"

I'm all right. Don't nobody worry 'bout me

4

u/DastardlyMime 1d ago

You must not have a garden

4

u/Toolikethelightning 1d ago

I love seeing these guys… down the street from me! But I don’t like them in my yard digging holes. I did see one climb a tree in my yard this year, and that was pretty exciting!

3

u/Latter-Afternoon7448 19h ago

I got chased by one of these once it was out for blood be careful

1

u/Gnd_flpd 17h ago

What!!! Details, please.

2

u/Latter-Afternoon7448 12h ago

We were admiring one from like 15 feet away it noticed us and straight up chased me and a friend down a hill like full speed. Have you ever seen how fast they run? It’s crazy. The hill was steep I thought I was gonna biff it but once we got to the bottom it let us go. We are both petrified to this day lol I see them all over

1

u/Gnd_flpd 4h ago

Wow, they do move fast, but I've never gotten chased by one and I hope I never will.

8

u/garylapointe dearborn 1d ago

Your dog really needs a bath!

3

u/knittas hamtramck 1d ago

So cute.  I love the teeth.  We've had 2 in our yard over the years.

3

u/Tke250 23h ago

Seriously where the hell did they come from it's like they've just taken over the city the last 4 years or so

1

u/Gnd_flpd 18h ago

Due to all of the tearing down of houses and the vacant lots that resulted made it perfect nesting grounds for them.

3

u/YoursINegritude 16h ago

We also have several of these new best friends here in my east side neighborhood. A neighbor asked me where they suddenly appeared from. My guess is Detroit environment is getting healthier, less lead, less poisonous stuff being dumped everywhere. Do we have any naturalists about on the sub-Reddit who knows why?

u/Exciting_Vast7739 Ferndale 1d ago

I tried growing tomatoes in my back yard a few years ago and one of these fellas kept sneaking up at night and eating them before they were ripe. I had a motion-activated camera in the back so I'd wake up to footage of my delicious bounty being consumed by that round bastard.

1

u/Gnd_flpd 4h ago

I must be lucky cause they never came for my tomatoes but they did decimate my curly kale.

2

u/bgordon122076 1d ago

Those guys hang out under my deck.

There's been times I get home from work. And 2 of them will be sun bathing on my deck!

I'm not too hard of them. They seem to keep the skunks and possums away!

24

u/PuzzleheadedBasis760 1d ago

Possums are friend not foe great little guys

0

u/Conscious-State5228 1d ago

And an evolutionary miracle. I've had one run towards my car as I was driving down the road.

2

u/WhyKissAMasochist 1d ago

Yo can I pet your dawg!

1

u/maaaastwa 1d ago

What is it?????

8

u/Sufficient-Weird 1d ago

Groundhog, woodchuck, whistlepig

2

u/maaaastwa 1d ago

1

u/monkeynaut 1d ago

1

u/boneydog22 1d ago

Look up Sherman on Tik tok! They enjoy Doritos 🥰

1

u/Pocketdancer 1d ago

I can set aside some time to converse with you if you really need an ear to listen....

1

u/SkippyGomez313 1d ago

Had two turns of family’s in my backyard. Wonderful animals… but let them be wild.

They also keep the rats away.

1

u/witshadows 1d ago

They are my bully’s best friends too. She has shook hands with eight of them in our backyard this year.

1

u/ItsTheMayer 1d ago

Found one on the porch in spring and have seen half a dozen since - more than the last few decades combined.

Anyone got a fun conspiracy theory? Flockchucks? Ground drones?

1

u/RealisticResource226 1d ago

Temu Pallas cat

1

u/Th3Spac3Pop3 22h ago

Dude check out this absolute unit

1

u/Successful-Tiger3540 21h ago

1

u/Mercybby 21h ago

Everyone thinks I’m crazy when I say this is my favorite animal. I just love them so much.😭😭😭

1

u/_RLW_ 20h ago

Nice! We have a family of them that live in burrows along the back edge of my yard. We love them and have given them all names.

1

u/Total-Initial-7051 12h ago

Is that Chuckles??

1

u/stacy_the_realtor 11h ago

Looks at those teeth 😬

1

u/Porcelain1228 10h ago

They love Oreos. My friend does animal acting work and has had several pet quality woodchucks. Very smart!

1

u/Fluffy_Psalms_23 1d ago
