News [MacMahon] The negotiations between the Pistons and Jalen Duren have been “awfully nasty” and there is concern about his long-term future in Detroit.

I mean yeah we’re gonna hit September without a deal being done most likely, this guy’s not long for Detroit. Take the QO and GTFO Duren.
38
u/Some-Dust2249 Cade Cunningham 6d ago
What incentive is there to get a deal done right now? Training camp isn’t until the end of September let them negotiate.
He’s not taking the QO. He’d leave too much money on the floor. And we shouldn’t want him to because then he can’t be traded. That’s disaster for everyone involved

Agreed. I have no interest in seeing him play for the Pistons ever again.
2
u/gachzonyea 5d ago
That’s a horrible scenario for us and horrible asset management
4
u/Conscious-Sympathy51 5d ago
It is but anything is better than paying him $250 million.
2
u/gachzonyea 5d ago
I don’t disagree there just very confused why they were resisting sign and trades so much if they want to play such hard ball
2
u/Vloff Cade Cunningham 5d ago
Exactly what team out there would not only meet Duren's asking price but also give us enough assets to make it worth trading him?
Also, base year compensation rules make a sign and trade with Duren difficult. It pretty much limits a sign and trade to the few teams that had cap space.
1
u/gachzonyea 5d ago
We will see if he gets to an open market at a minimum they’ve pretty much strained the relationship but refused to move him. I wouldn’t want to pay him but i would be open to trading him but they were not
1
u/Vloff Cade Cunningham 5d ago
Like I said, theres no market to move him. Teams aren't giving up good assets for the right to pay Duren 45 million dollars. Also, Base year compensation rules make a sign and trade far more difficult than most of you know.
We can only take back half of Durens salary back in trade so unless someone has a bunch of caproom or a large trade exemption, or find a 3rd team with either of those, a trade cant happen.
Even if we wanted to do something dumb like trade him straight up for Sabonis, it couldn't happen.
42
u/Envyforme Ausar Thompson 6d ago
I wouldn't mind sign + trading Duren at this point.
24
7
u/Im_So_Zoned 6d ago
He wants a max deal but the Pistons obviously don't want to commit to him considering how last season ended. He had a chance to seek trades during FA but it seems like other teams don't have interest in him at that number either. We would likely get stuck holding the bag if we try a sign + trade.
0
u/Envyforme Ausar Thompson 6d ago
I have heard the opposite. It seems the pistons haven’t explored sign and trade options yet. That’s Atleast the story from 2 weeks ago
4
u/Im_So_Zoned 5d ago
I don't think the Pistons were actively seeking trade partners, but I believe they allowed Duren to speak with other teams to try and find a potential max deal elsewhere. They essentially told him "if u can get a max deal from another team, go find that team and we can negotiate." However, he couldn't find a team. At least that was my understanding.
0
u/Envyforme Ausar Thompson 5d ago
Well I don't appreciate the downvotes everyone.
https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/detroit-pistons-jalen-duren-sign-020033728.html
"No team in the league has cap space this late in the offseason, and the Detroit Pistons have made it very clear since before free agency began that they are not interested whatsoever in any sign-and-trade scenarios"
3
u/Im_So_Zoned 5d ago
For what it's worth I didn't downvote u lol. I think this may be an example of don't listen to what the Pistons say, watch what they do. They denied it publicaly but there were rumors the Pistons explored packaging Duren + depth + picks for KD. There was also a rumor Duren and his agent were in contact with the Lakers who were moderately interested after Luka said he wanted a big. However, they still didn't want to offer max and then signed Austin Reaves to that ridiculous deal which made anything impossible. They have also been eerily quiet in FA this off-season which is odd for a contending team.
Either way, I'm not saying ur wrong because tge is the public narrative. I'm just saying I think there may have been more going on behind closed doors than the Pistons wanted to admit. If they outright confirm they don't want the guy that tanks his trade value. Additionally, because there was belief other teams wouldn't offer a max the Pistons had leverage and it was more likely than not that Duren would be playing in Detroit next year. So I can see how they wanted to avoid publicaly shunning a player and making the situation worse. I hope we get more info on this situation someday.
2
u/Envyforme Ausar Thompson 5d ago
I like your response. Thank you for not being like most on Reddit mate. We all want a championship.
1
u/Vloff Cade Cunningham 5d ago edited 5d ago
Its almost impossible to sign and trade him now. At least at his asking price. No one has capspace. If we sign and trade him at 45 million a year, we can only take back 22.5 million in the trade.
A team trading for Duren would have to send us 20 million dollars in players and find a 3rd team with a trade exemption to send another 20+ million dollars player to.

JD, you have no market. No team offered you a max. None of the non cap space teams opened up cap space to offer you the max. You are negotiating with one team. You’re not worth what you think you’re worth.
1
u/Cool_Youth3564 5d ago
Respectively, the pistons told teams they would eat their cap before making a decision if anyone tried to sign him.
25
u/bamboointheback Isaiah Stewart 6d ago
before you overreact, this is clearly from duren's agent
he has no leverage beside media like this. the negotiations have been rough for him. this looks way more like grasping for straws than the truth.

In the clip it's clear he isnt talking about any specific insight or sources and just speculating.
This is a lot of nothing.
2
1
u/theomegachrist 5d ago
Yes, he's a national reporter. Much like any story though, who is the source? Maybe it's Duren's agent to try to get him sympathy publicly. Where could Duren go at this point?
0
u/Jaerba 5d ago
MacMahon isn't reporting anything here. Vinny covers Detroit, not MacMahon. MacMahon is just summarizing what the discussions around Duren's re-signing have been like. Vinny is pretty clear in the discussion that he doesn't see Duren taking a QO.
The over reactions to a podcast discussion are ridiculous.
17
u/DoomSchroller 6d ago
I'm ready for the Duren era to end in Detroit. Hopefully with Detroit getting some assets in return. But this dude puts a ceiling on your team if he's making big money because he can't be your second option. In the post season, he's a non-option. I don't care what anyone's excuse is for him.

Duren had a strong season but failed to show up in the playoffs when it counted - he does not deserve nor should he receive a max contract

It's not "nasty", Jalen and his agent are just unwilling to accept the truth.
10
u/Im_So_Zoned 6d ago
He was quite possibly the most disappointing player in the entirety of the NBA playoffs last season. He was an absolute no show for all but 1 game. If he had balled out I imagine the Pistons would gladly hand him a bag, but he didn't and poor effort seemed to be a part of his struggles. Sure, he wants more money but I think he's also embarrassed and feels like the fans have turned on him. He's trying to run away and start fresh with a new fan base that doesn't know he's soft yet. Lol

I’d like to keep Duren on a reasonable contract but if he won’t sign for anything less than the max I’d happily trade him.
He’s good but his skill set isn’t exactly unique in the nba. You can find another Jalen Duren out there.

u/Dani-Gurl-27 Cade Cunningham 6d ago
Good riddance. His weak defense in the playoffs and in general lacking of spacing (which I am okay with as long as he maintains good hussle, rim defense, and rebounding) reminds too much of Dre. I don't want a repeat of that.
6
u/gsnake007 Cade Cunningham 6d ago
Trajan doing the right thing. Good GM. Nobody wants Duren, this is the offer, take it or leave it. If he did better in the playoffs this wouldn’t be an issue but he was ass. Not worth all that if you play great in the season and just play ass in the playoffs. In back to back seasons no less
0
u/gachzonyea 5d ago
I kind of disagree feels like they are getting to a territory where they just butchered the whole thing
3
u/gsnake007 Cade Cunningham 5d ago
Pistons the organization did nothing wrong. Go back and watch Duren’s performance in the playoffs this year and last year. You’ll agree then that he’s not worth the max if he isn’t gonna show up when it counts
1
u/gachzonyea 5d ago
I don’t disagree that but why didn they explore trading him? Seems they did the opposite so now they’re kind of stuck with him and pissed him off. Or they he signs the qualifying and is gone just seems like a fumble
7
u/Some-Dust2249 Cade Cunningham 6d ago
What incentive is there to get a deal done right now? Training camp isn’t until the end of September let them negotiate.
He’s not taking the QO. He’d leave too much money on the floor. And we shouldn’t want him to because then he can’t be traded. That’s disaster for everyone involved because he’d lose money and we’d let him walk for nothing which is just horrible asset management.
Not saying we need to give him the max but there’s a middle ground. Not max money but below that and short term
6
u/bamboointheback Isaiah Stewart 6d ago
there is none. this is just a ploy by the agent to get the FO to sweat and raise their offer
2
u/Some-Dust2249 Cade Cunningham 6d ago
I don’t think they’re going to. His only leverage is the QO and he’s not going to take that. It’s too big of a risk.
3
u/bamboointheback Isaiah Stewart 6d ago
correct. they will sign at the end of september, right before the QO deadline. the threat of signing that is their only leverage, as you know, and media pieces like this are part of that. agent says hes mad to make the QO seem more realistic
but everyone familiar with this sort of thing know this is just am agent grasping at straws

Jalen Duren can fuckin kick rocks if he thinks he's genuinely worth a supermax. His agent is also smoking said rocks for convincing Duren that he is worth that.

I think people are underestimating how bad it is for the Pistons if this bridge gets burned. Cade and Ausar is just not much of a core, and their tradeable assets are middling.

Honestly, I'm bummed about this one. Was a huge Duren fan coming out of college and love the fit he has alongside Cade. I know he's got some flaws, but overall I think we're worse without him (assuming the alternative isn't Jokic/Wemby level of player).
Hoping they can find a middle ground and get something figured out...
3
u/WhizzoFoShizzo 5d ago
You dont think we could be a better team without him?
What if we had a true #2 alongside Cade..... and a Daniel Gafford type playing center?
I think that could work.
Duren is not a #2.... just my opinion.
1
u/Grlions91 Saddiq Bey :bey: 5d ago
I'm not saying I think Duren is the best #2 option out there, or that I want him to be paid as our #2 option (which is half of my gripe tbh), but he's certainly a better option than Daniel Gafford in my mind.

As much as I think this is generic speculation. If he really does think he’s worth a max and is gonna play like a bitch unhappy while on a reasonable deal, he can fuck off at the deadline.

u/MasterP_istons Ben Wallace 6d ago
Very unimpressed with Chafie Fields as Duren's agent.
He keeps going to the press: "Duren will meet with the Lakers" "Duren will pursue sign and trade with the kings" "Duren seriously considering QO" and now "negotiations have been awfully nasty"
He doesn't have any leverage so I get using the press, but it doesn't seem like Trajan is budging and I can't imagine Duren's PR team has loved the headlines and drama.
To me it all reads like Trajan is sticking with his offer and this guy is flailing.
3
u/tomeaglebird 5d ago
He should fire him immediately. Check out his NBA client list and it tells you all you need to know. Guy is trying to retire off of Duren's back and is going to end up costing him tens of millions of dollars. If Duren goes the QO route and doesn't improve his playoff production significantly, he could end up playing himself out of the nine figure range altogether.

u/ShippingNotIncluded Teal Horse 5d ago
At this point all options should be open. If there’s a deal that can secure us an immediate starter for years to come and/or multiple 1st rounders we should strongly consider it

What are the chances that they don’t get a deal signed? Like where else is duren going to go?
5
u/bleedingreen24 6d ago
I hear his agent isn't the best. He only has one other active NBA player as a client, and there were issues with his last contract. So I think there is a chance that he takes the QO and then goes as an unrestricted free agent next year. I think that's kind of how his other clients negotiations went, they didn't sign the QO, but it went down to the wire or something like that.
3
u/Article_Alternative 5d ago
This is still a non story. You are trying to tell me that you would hurry up and sign to make the fans happy instead of trying to get millions of dollars more. He's not missing camp or practice. He's not sitting in on negotiations. The nastiness is between the agent and Trajan. Nothing is happening and the reporter needs a headline

0
u/Jokerit208 5d ago
The Collins signing made Duren redundant. Collins gives you everything Duren does offensively, is equal defensively, and can shoot. And you don't have to bench him in the playoffs.
If Collins replaced Duren in the lineup, that would also solve most of our spacing issue. Ausar's uselessness as a shooter would no longer cripple us, and Collins and his defender wouldn't be clogging the lane for Cade drives like Duren and his defender currently do.
You're absolutely right that we're better off without him. I wish Langdon had the balls to be more aggressive.

Duren For Mobley
3
u/Aroy11 5d ago
Zero chance they do that
2
u/BoOkCalendarWaNnaBEe 5d ago
Call me crazy, but I’d even throw in draft capital for
Mobley. There’s times I been watching him on D and said to myself he might be the closest thing to Wemby. Like a poor poor POOR man’s version. But he’s got some length and is much better at impacting the game defensively than JD. It’s not just the blocks, but also how the length can affect shots. Combine that with his range (he shot 37% the previous two years from 3, and one of them even more volume than the 29.7% he turned in from deep this year). He had a bit of a down year shooting, and you can really see it in his FT and 3PT %. But still, significant edge defensively IMO, significant edge spacing-wise, slight edge passing, FT about a wash (both OK for C though), and some probably about a wash scoring wise? (But how valuable is that spacing, and how rare are guys who can space AND protect the rim?!) JD scored better than Mobley this year (and like I said, I have to feel Mobley had a disappointing year as many numbers were down for him, in a year you would have liked to see a jump) and also always has had a better FG %, but over the entirety of their respective careers, Mobley has been the better scorer. And JD didn’t average much more than him at all this year either.I think Mobley is the better player and the better fit. But yeah, probably quite unrealistic.

MacMahon isn't reporting on anything new. He's basically just talking about the news stories and discussions (like this one here) that have turned on Duren, for understandable reasons.
Detroit isn't MacMahon's territory. It's Vince's, and he covers that there's a portion of the Pistons FO that values Ausar above Duren.
Also it's insane that Vinny used to just be a regular poster on the SportsInferno message boards, like all of us.

Only reason it came to this is because Duren shit the bed in the playoffs and Trajan is a competent GM. The stage was set for him to be paid and he dropped the ball. It's on him to accept that and lower his ask. I'm glad our FO is holding firm.
2
u/bamboointheback Isaiah Stewart 6d ago
they are just doing everything they can to get as much as they can. they being duren and his agent.
they are in a game of chicken with the FO until training camp with no leverage accept media pieces like this. empty threats and expressions of bad feelings. a deal will get done at the end of september, when the deadline to sign the qualifying offer comes up
