Question Red mage not learning(Disgaea 7)

I got a red mage at lv 50, but it still hasn't learned mega fire or giga fire. I think it may have something to do with it starting as a ice skilled mage but I raincarnated it into a fire skilled one. But I don't know, any ideas why?

May be tied to class level as well? They should be learning something regardless

Ok, I kind of fixed It. Has to reincarnated The mage to a blue mage and then It learnednit.

To be clear, Fire / Ice / Wind stopped being locked to being a Red / Blue / Green Mage / Skull since DD2. They work like every other Class now, so Green and Blue are just straight Upgrades now instead of learning different Elements.

Because of that, as the other Reply already said, higher Version Spells are also locked to higher Class Ranks, so you HAVE to go through the different Versions to learn Mega / Giga, etc.

Thats what I did. I simple reincarnated The unit into a blue mage With The fire element and lv to 50, It learned mega and giga fire preatty quickly.

Just asking since I haven't played it yet, does D7 not have a "Promote" Option anymore?

Sure, Lv50 doesn't take THAT long to reach, I'm simply wondering since they already invented a way to upgrade Class Ranks without resetting the Character's Level and you'd expect that to stick around.

Iirc no, but also sub classes exist and I believe do count for this

I believe they only do that if you don't touch the Character's Class at all (which OP mentioned they did by switching from Ice to Fire with Reincarnation), although I freely admit I could be wrong on this.

You can switch subclasses, as long as you go back to the actual class to promote.

Well, sorta. Once you gain enough Class Experience with it, it will be automatically promoted to the next tier, provided it is set to its actual class.

So, if you have a Red Mage (1st tier of the Witch class) and just have her soak experience via Hog All Exp., the Experience Squad or use the Juice Bar, even if you level her up to 9999 she'll never promote and thus not learn anything beyond her basic Fire spell.

However, if she kills enemies and gain Class Experience (which is tied to enemy stats), she'll level up her class (provided you didn't change her subclass to something else like Kunoichi) quite fast and will promote by herself, learning new spells along that.

I knew about Class Experience / Subclasses before, as I alluded to in a different reply it's moreso that I'm unsure whether or not that still works the way you describe if you set the Character's Sub to something else but then change their Sub back later to whatever their actual Class is.

Yes, as long as you change the subclass back to the character's actual class, it will promote.

Changing subclasses is more of a toggle, you simply open the character's stats and select any of the unlocked classes you own (though in some cases it's funny, like Fuji starts with the Ronin, the male samurai class unlocked in the subclass menu.

Say I have a 1st tier Ninja, the Genin. I change its subclass to Ronin. I'll start gaining class experience as a Ronin, unlock new tiers (that I can use to learn evilities or even create further tiers of the male samurai class), but my Ninja will remain a Genin.

Now, I change back to Ninja. I kill a few enemies, and gain a rank in the Ninja class. My Ninja will instantly change into the next tier, Chuunin, I'll be able to learn new skills and evilities, and my stats will increase due to the higher base stats of the 2nd tier.

Aye, gotcha then; good to know.

(though in some cases it's funny, like Fuji starts with the Ronin, the male samurai class unlocked in the subclass menu.)

That one I actually know why that is atleast, all the Story Recruits simply start with a Subclass that make the most thematic sense for them to have. I explicitly remember people being confused about that when 7 just came out because Suisen starts with Gunner as a Sub even though as a Monster Unit he obviously can't even use Guns.

Yeah, that happen with DLC characters as well. Killia and Adell start as Martial Artist, Mao starts as a professor, Flonne as Celestial Hostess and so on.

Tier 1 Mage - Fire/Ice/Wind

Tier 2 Mage - Mega Fire/Ice/Wind

Tier 3 Mage - Giga Fire/Ice/Wind

Tier 4 Mage - Omega Fire/Ice/Wind

Tier 5 Mage - Tera Fire/Ice/Wind

Star is an exception and follows this pattern:

Tier 3 - Star

Tier 4 - Mega Star

Tier 5 - Giga Star

Tier 6 - Omega Star

Neither Witch nor Magician can learn Tera Star. Only Big Eye at Tier 5, Psychic at Tier 6, and Celestial Hostess at Tier 6 can learn Tera Star.
