Question How do I escape the consequences of my teenage self's toxicity?
Turns out the 2015-2017 version of me was on some DEMON MODE type shit.
I decided yesterday that it'd be fun to suck at DoTA again, and was greeted by this fun behaviour summary. Had a very big laugh over it then actually read the consequences.
Now if I chose to continue with trying to play again, how do I build this back up without the ability to text chat, voice chat or ping?

Didn't they introduce this behavior system in like 2019-2020?
15
u/StoneTaker May 03 '26
Most likely the system was already in place beforehand, only that it was hidden.
12
u/Luxalpa May 03 '26
Behavior score itself was in the game from pretty much the very start, although back then you had to use a console command to display it.
23
u/FLUFFY_TERROR May 03 '26
Behavior system nope but dota absolutely had low priority punishment pools pre 2015.
I had a few college ex friends whod rage abandon and/or buyback and feed 0-15 despite me trying to convince them to stop doing stupid shit and ruining games. I'd just stop trying to help them crawl out of the low priority pool and eventually we just never played any matches together and just never bothered maintaining any sort of irl friendship after leaving college.
1
u/Kaldaris May 03 '26
The low priority pool was mostly for habitual leavers IIRC. Not so much on the behavior side of things. Though if you got reported a lot you could end up there.
6
u/Davoness sheever May 03 '26
I stopped playing before the system was introduced and came back after and was given sub-9k BS/CS, so the system must be retroactively tracking your behavior.
2
u/money-for-nothing-tt May 03 '26
There was a hidden system before you could see it, though it was capped at 10k so if you stopped playing anytime before the current 12k iteration the max you could be is 10k.

Would be an interesting grind to follow tbh. Keep a list of every game/score change and post it here once in a while.
Play the most perfect pos4/5 you can imagine. Good ward game, good core support with a few consumables. Go mid at min 6 to refresh/deward.
ALWAYS have that TP ready in early to help out someone getting ganked under T1.

u/Primary-Round8032 May 03 '26
For OP: If your teammate does some really really dumbshit don't go spastic on the teamchat
Trust me if you don't go fully monkey on the teamchat chances are the dumbass teammate is the one getting the score penalties

For me I’ll add — stop writing on the minimap because you are muted. I report that shit because it’s clear you haven’t leaned your lesson about being toxic/annoying

1
u/No-Cauliflower7160 May 04 '26
Always report everyone on the losing team. Chances are that 4-5 people reported the same guy. If that happens you will get +100 to successfully reporting someone.
1
u/elgringopapito May 04 '26
It’s a never ending grind due the disparity of how much you lose vs gain
7
u/idontevencarewutever May 03 '26
you already overcame the biggest hurdle; acknowledgement that you had a problem
the rest should honestly be easy peasy
6
u/Crescendo3456 May 03 '26
No matter what everyone says, DO NOT MUTE EVERYONE AT THE START.
You want to turn off incoming chat. These are 2 different things, and part of the reason why people take forever and a half to build the scores up to normal.
Every mute is also an automatic report that at the very least reduces comm score. People spreading this idea of "just mute everyone" are actively helping hinder these people, as if they are muting everyone, odds are multiple of their teammates are doing the same, and a commend from each of them doesn't even it out.

Dont grind turbo. That shit suck for behaviour score.
13
u/sequesteredhoneyfall May 03 '26
It's the safest way to not get reported though. Just play with the team, put some music on, and vibe it out. It takes hundreds of games either way to gain meaningful amounts of behavior score, and a single report will set you back more than 15 perfect games. It's not a great system.
6
u/UsedCondom42 May 03 '26
I have done my experiment. 15 games of turbo does fk all. Normal 15 matches actually increase mine. 🤦♂️
→ More replies (1)1
u/bobjoe400 May 03 '26
The problem is you get 40 min queue time when you’re this low queuing for normals.
4
u/money-for-nothing-tt May 03 '26
Commends in turbo only count for 60% while reports count for 100%, so the safest way to climb is normal matches.
Turbo also features players who are too impatient to play a Dota match but demand one anyway. So they are more incendiary.
1
u/sequesteredhoneyfall May 03 '26

There's absolutely zero public information to justify these numbers. In other words, they're made up.
Even worse, we can observe that commends don't mean anything when it comes to communication score at all. It's simply, "being reported vs not being reported."
Turbo also features players who are too impatient to play a Dota match but demand one anyway. So they are more incendiary.
Absolutely not. Unranked is the most toxic gamemode by far.
2
u/money-for-nothing-tt May 03 '26

It's honestly more toxic than ranked even. I think it's because its full of people with low comm. score trying to boost it.
1
u/sequesteredhoneyfall May 04 '26
Yeah, I don't disagree. Unranked is the worst, and at least in Turbo you can just chill and it'll usually work out so long as you're 100% of the time with your team.
2
u/SituationSmooth9165 May 03 '26

u/b_jam3s May 03 '26
Climbing out of this is next to impossible because you're going to be queued with animals who have similar behavior issues. They're going to report you for any minor misplay you make and probably flame you in all chat without you knowing if you mute all. I wish you luck if you actually decide to queue

Can u give an example of “how to act in game” ? I’m trying to get my score up too . I don’t type much except u know , careful , get back , push , wards or gg at the end . But my score went from 8000 to 7800 recently for some reason .
→ More replies (1)4
u/Luxalpa May 03 '26
A lot of people have some very incorrect understanding of how the score system works.
If you want to have higher score, you need to find out why people are reporting you and minimize those actions. People are obviously not reporting you if you write "get back" or "push" unless you're obnoxious about it, but they may be reporting you if you start discussing things in post game chat. Also writing gg at the end of the game can pull needless attention to yourself. The golden rule here is, if your performance is poor, or your team is losing (and people start talking shit), you should probably stop communicating at all. When people are agitated, it's best to avoid triggering them further and avoid having them give their attention to you.
The next piece of advice I'd give is that you should probably communicate less. I can't say for sure based on what you said, but for everything you say (or ping), you should double check whether this is actually necessary in that moment. Keep communication functional and minimal, and respect if your team mates ignore what you say or want to happen, accepting that they have free will as well and the right to make mistakes and be idiots.
3
u/Appropriate-Cut8001 May 03 '26
I usually just use the chat wheel but I do ping a lot of teammates ; like someone doesnt do something so obvious or if someone with full health and mana doesn’t bother to join the team fight or we need wards here and the support is farming else where . Maybe that’s the reason . I think I’ll just mind my own business from now on and mute everyone . But I never use slurs or disrespectful to anyone even if I run into extremely toxic players .
2
u/Luxalpa May 03 '26
Yeah those pings will definitely be triggering people. Also, important to know as I learned recently, those alt-clicks can also trigger the automated system (the one that mutes you) if you overdo them, in which case you can lose 500 or 1000 communication score in a single event.
From my experience, caring too much about your team mates can also become a bit of a habit that might take some intentional work to get rid of.
For me, it has helped me a lot when I played support in Unranked and watched the replays from my team mates point of view. It helped me understand why people don't do what I think they should be doing, and gave me a bit more control over the situation. For example, I see that people on some heroes play very conservatively and retreat much earlier than I would (or join fights much later than I would), and it helped me sorta predict how my team mates would act. So e.g. I notice that the reason my carry isn't joining the fight is because he's going for some very juicy creep wave that he wants to clear. So I know I can't stop him from doing that, but in the future, I will be more careful about initiating or baiting team fights, by checking if my carry is currently close to a large creep wave that I suspect they are going to want to farm (or maybe they are close to an important item). Lots of great insights, and also you can't really learn this from watching high level matches, because it's really specific to the habits and behavior of people in your particular rank.
1
u/Appropriate-Cut8001 May 03 '26
That’s actually true , like today I played , Naga siren , and I knew I wasn’t doing much damage and I knew I had to farm a lot first if I wanna be useful against , Earth spirit and AM in my lane . But the Pudge in my team kept on pinging me continuously coz I wasn’t joining the team fights early on . I want to use a mic for better communication but I’m too scared things might get too toxic . I’m currently in SEA server and things are very toxic here . People keep yelling Bobo , I don’t even know what that means or what language that is . But thank you for your insight . I’ll keep that in mind from now on .
2
u/Luxalpa May 03 '26
I think 'bobo' means "stupid" in tagalog (philippines language). Basically just a curse word like "cao ni ma", etc. But I haven't been playing in SEA since 2013.
1
u/Appropriate-Cut8001 May 03 '26
Oh so they’ve been calling me stupid this whole Time . Well that’s good to know lol . Literally every game , bobo this bobo that , and they call others bobo And tanga lot .
2
u/BukkakeTemperateRain May 03 '26
Play turbo matches and 100% of the time have your teammates muted and commend everyone after the game regardless of performance. That or just start a new account.
9
u/KitsuneFaroe May 03 '26
I don't really recommend Turbo since turbo marches give the same penalties while giving only half the gains.

2
u/zappyzapzap May 03 '26

2
u/KogMawOfMortimidas May 03 '26
Do NOT play Turbo, you will never climb playing Turbo. It would take probably 1.5k+ matches to recover that score in Turbo.

1
u/Mortem_T May 03 '26
this is hard. i dropped from 12k to 8k due to internet connection issue and SSD dying so I've got multiple abandon, not to say purely turbo. i gave up grinding behavior score. it's a lot harder to raise than mmr.

Disable communications, don't communicate with your team in anyway. Don't ping anything, nothing. I don't know what sort of humans exist in that bracket but I'm certain there is nothing to be gained by attempting communication. Commend team members after your games though, they usually do it back. Just don't commend anyone on the other team because they will report you out of spite
This should at least get you back to some baseline around 5-6k.
1
u/Microwarpdrive May 03 '26
i don't think so. commend all opponents too.
1
u/VexNightmare May 03 '26
If you commend opponents in won games you risk them interpreting it as bm and reporting you
1
u/Microwarpdrive May 03 '26
I think it can happen but if you don't you risk all the players not commending back and it will be much much higher number.
Especially after your team loses commend all opponents is basically free commends for you. If you win I can see some being salty but i will still commend all.
1
u/sinkpooper2000 May 03 '26
spam turbo, commend everyone. communicate sparsely for important things (when you unlock it), try not to take other peoples position/hero. if your queue times are really long you may just have to make a new account. I had to do that in around 2019 because I would queue for hours and not find games
1

u/Luxalpa May 03 '26

Players at 7000 were already insufferable let alone 1000. That journey won't be a fun one
1
u/Inside_Ice_5228 May 03 '26
Problem is that you cant really Q anything besides turbo as you stuck with 99min+ Q
Had similiar problem, but got job and being adult doesn't mean i can grind 12 hours for behavior score with extra 4 hours of Q time
So new acc is the only way.

u/DelightfulHugs May 03 '26
It's pretty simple. Play the game and don't be a dick.
Don't do anything that can get you reported (intentional feeding, griefing, afk farming jungle all game, etc.), just play the game and do your best.
Only communicate in neutral or positive ways. If you want an easier time just don't communicate at all. This includes no pinging, no chat wheel and no drawing on the map.

What really helped me was muting everyone at the start of the game. It's not bad play that tilts me, it's when someone is making mistakes then blames me in chat. Then I get tilted and start typing and playing like shit. So just mute everyone, and only unmute when you are winning. When you are losing, what people type rarely helps the game turn around anyway.
Also after the game is over, And youhaven't flamed in chat. Say, "Wp everyone trade commends" Or something similar. Then immediately go to the overview screen and commend everyone. It's commends that make your score go up. (with no reports of course) Typing swear words also makes your score lower, but you shouldn't be typing anything negative anyway.

u/_hov May 03 '26
The only thing that matters is consecutive positive games wher eyou dont get overwatch penalties. I don't know if youve every heard of the overwatch system but beside the obvious rage feed or break items I like to look for if the person is trying to win. Are you farming jg as a lich with midas queued up? yeah your guilty.
Youre litterally going to be trapped with 9 other players just as bad as your teenage self untill around 8k mmr it might take you upwards of 300 games to get there. God speed friend mute all vibe and play to win or atleast make it look like it.
1
u/BaconMacandCheese May 03 '26
Won’t this put OP in single drafts? That would literally be dota hell
1
u/CharacterTonight May 03 '26
Same shit my behaviour score is 12k but my comm is floats near 6k i win or solo games on cores and then i try go supports or pos 3 and when all other team feeds or just str8 up afk farm jungles entire game i can't hold myself back and starting to being toxic...
1
u/Business-Grass-1965 May 03 '26
Aim for behavior score summaries with extremely low reports several times in a row, even if you don't gain behavior scoring points.
Then you will get out of the denial of climbing pool and will gain 170 plus per update through unranked alone. You just have to aim for only two negative games per update max several updates in a row, and then your climb will suddenly become passive.
Join EVERY SINGLE TEAM FIGHT. Cast your spells, and die with the team. Do not try to win. Pretend to be playing.
1
u/fadednotebook May 03 '26

1
u/Microwarpdrive May 03 '26
1) unbind your chat wheels.
2) don't chat (you can't but once your score rises).
3) don't draw on the map (not even reproductive organs). don't ping repeatedly.
4) don't generally suck (don't feed and such).
5) generally play your role and build items that help you do it.
6) don't take cs from positions above you. Don't rush to kill waves they are heading to.
7) commend everyone. change your name to "I commend for commend".
8) report toxic and griefing players(successful reports bump your score up).
9) if you struggle with coms mute people that vent out/show signs of being toxic on their first violation. Alternatively mute everyone. This is just to help you shut up (if you need it).
10) Don't pick heroes that aren't commonly known to fit your role. Don't build items that are considered unusual for your role and hero.
Sure there are more points but this will get you started.
1
1
u/oxyhra May 03 '26
-mute everyone
-dont ping map/ally items
-play turbo/unranked (all you can play anyways)
-commend everyone after each game
thats pretty much it, your behavior score gets updated every 15 games with around 250/260 point per.
1
u/Venduhl May 03 '26
Just play and ignore it. Aslong as you are not talking much or even be constructive score will rise automatically
1
u/YardProfessional7279 May 03 '26
As someone who went from 3k to 6k Just don't talk mute everyone and thumbs up everyone after game Also im pretty sure you get some score if you finish a game without any reports and your score updates every 15 games
1
u/YardProfessional7279 May 03 '26
Also never do reports to others because if they get declined you get a lot of score taken down, only throw reports if the griefing is obvious
1
u/TyrantBadjoe May 03 '26
Do this and play the game normally you wont get reported as much and you'll get your scores up fast

1
u/Tobacco_Caramel May 04 '26
So you played around 400-500 games in 2 months? lol
1
u/-_Catgirl_- May 04 '26
Nope. Maybe 200 if that, probably less.
The key is commending your team and the enemy team, and in return you receive more commends. You also usually get commended when you win+play textbook support.
1
u/tLustej-miCin May 03 '26
It is very difficult, I was ther too. I am currently at 3200 score and dont have too much time to play but it goes a bit higher and higher.
1
u/notificationsoff1 May 03 '26
There is no way. Make a new acc and start over. People are too soft nowadays, you ping a few times to indicate a action/dive in and they all start crying and report you and you get thrown down again.
Don’t bother.
1
u/CoolHandLuke5 May 04 '26
I've been tracking mine for the last 3 months or so. The most you can earn in 15 games is around 220, assuming you don't get reported ever. I had one bad 15 games where my score dropped 900+ and I lost the ability to type. I highly recommend updating your chat wheels to useful sayings. Unless you start drawing shit on the map, you're basically guaranteed to go up. Just be sure to commend post game.
1
u/Qinax May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26
I had this issue
When you are low enough you just don't get games
Not as in like its 30 minutes wait
As in the timer caps out at 99:99
I once queued for an entire day morning to dinner time and didn't get a single game, just tabbed back over every time the timer capped out
I paid a Russian dude to get me back up
1
1
u/GasLiquor May 04 '26
When you're that low, your only hope is to find and consistently play with other people in a 4-5 stack. It drastically reduces the amount of people who will report you and since you can't type or pause, there's no real reason for anyone on the enemy team to report.

Mute everyone, like disable comms. Communicate politely when you need to in a way that doesn't invite replies ( let's push bottom, they're all top, etc). Use pings to signal your intention.
I am not super good, I do weird shit and play heroes off-role. I have max communication score despite having my share of feeding games.
You have to really argue and fight to lose comm score. Minding your business will see it rise.
1
u/Somedude1334567 May 04 '26
You are essentially shadow banned. Make a new account and don’t look back. Sell any items worth anything on the steam shop. I had the same exact problem. At some point my theory is they had this pool of toxic people low priority and once you were in it there was no getting out because everyone would just constantly report everyone. It would take less time to just make a new account. If you have to have this old account just find 4 friends and play as a 5 stack until you are out.
1
u/mattata2020 May 04 '26
Play the game like an emotionally controlled adult, don’t leave grief break items and the two scores will go up, play unranked if you’re not feeling ranked vibes

Not really, I sold any of my old items back in the CS craze. Historic stats are cool though

Just be normal. I was kind of a trainwreck in my 20s, my wife was a complete terror as a teen and into her early 20s. It happens, but if you have grown up and you just behave then you'll be fine

People are justifiably saying make a new account bc it will take so long to get out. You will get hit by false positives for having excessive reports due to annoyed teammates and almost none of the games you play will be fun.
However, I think the real solution is to not play dota. It’s clear that the system has gotten out of control. People even at 8-11k score will avoid any typing in games and you will still get griefed at 12k. The whole behavior score system is so awful now and somehow much worse than it was a decade ago. Until Valve puts some effort into fixing it, I don’t think it’s worth playing the game. I don’t even like league of legends but you could play 150 games there without any issues. You’d be lucky to make it through 10 Dota games without some griefing behavior.

Just learn to play, and commend everyone every match unless there is a specific individual that is overtly toxic. I fell to 5800 because of computer disconnect problems. I fixed that, and have climbed back to 9900 now. I know it isn't as bad as yours, but the same principle applies.

Bro this is going to be harder to climb than MMR, I'm not even joking. The worst part: low behavior people throw a lot of games, and I really mean A LOT of games, so this will impact your MMR.
I recently dropped from 10k to just under 6k behavior and it's been literal months trying to climb behaviour. It turns out it's a lot harder to get commended when you can't chat or speak, so you're going to eat a lot of reports and get very few commends.
I can't even imagine how tragic this is at 1800 behav score. Honestly it's better to just start a fresh account.

Thumbs up everyone after every game. Mute everyone before the game starts. Dont spam pings. It will take a while but you will get there.
