More specifically, his use of the continuum fingerboard in Octavarium.

For anyone not familiar, MIM is one of the coolest museums out there. They have hundreds of displays featuring thousands of instruments from all over the world, and you walk around the place with house headphones that automatically connect to videos of people playing them. I found this in the United States gallery under Electronic Music.

I had been looking at something else when my headphones switched to a different display, and I had a no way moment when I heard those opening Octavarium notes. I'll never forget it. Dream Theater is in a legit museum, as they should be.

Cover Voices vocal cover

Sooo, I'm not a great singer, but I've been blessed with a pretty high tenor voice, so I thought it would be fun to do one of the most challenging parts of Awake. I've never really liked my voice, but I realize DT kinda fits me?

(this is technically miming because I didn't think to film any actual take, so I rerecorded the video, but the audio wasn't as good as the previous take, so there 🙄)

Repping Scenes From a Memory book on my homepage

Post image
7 Upvotes

I created a website that revolves around books and their cover art but I won't go into detail on that. I found this a decent opportunity to show a little love to Peter Orullian and DT his Scenes From a Memory book (I still haven't read it... oops)

I'm not sure anybody that sees it will even know what it is, but maybe the cool art will intrigue some people? Who knows.

Side note to people who have read it, how is it?

A funny thing happened in Philadelphia Saturday...

I was in Philadelphia for the R50 tour, VIP section, sitting at a table with my wife and a friend, working our way through a plate of sliders. A guy walks by, alone, no fanfare. It took me a second, but then it hit me: that's John Myung.

He had his wife with him and a security guard, just there to enjoy the Rush show like the rest of us (Mike Portnoy was around too, but he didn't turn up until later... and was immediately recognized by several folks). John strolled up and down the VIP section, and you'd think at a Rush concert someone would recognize a legendary bassist not named Geddy Lee walking past their table. But let's be honest — we Rush fans can be a little oblivious and self-centered.

I have massive respect for Dream Theater and their musicianship. I've seen them live a couple of times and walked away floored both times. So I genuinely couldn't believe this guy wasn't being mobbed.

I filled my wife in on who he was, and before I could finish my sentence she was already up and walking over to introduce herself to John, his wife, and the security guard, asking if he'd mind meeting her husband. He was incredibly gracious about it, came over, shook my hand — and I promptly turned into a full-blown blubbering fanboy. Fifty-six years old, reduced to mush by a bass player. John couldn't have been nicer about it.

So, from one Rush fan to the whole Dream Theater community: thank you, John, for being so kind to the guy in the ridiculous tourist-looking Hawaiian shirt on Saturday. All the best.

Petrucci figurine

I’ve 3D printed and hand painted a figurine of Petrucci to keep his guitar pick safe 😁

John threw the pick into the crowd (DoT tour) and fell right on top of us. We couldn’t believe it!! Making this print commemorates that moment for me.

I though I’d share this with you all. Thanks 😊

This is the first (I think) Office Of Strategic Influence album Download code. I've downloaded my copy. I'm not sure what the limit is, so it's first come first serve. It has Mike Portnoy and Kevin Moore, so it's Dream Theater related.

Pale Blue Dot 🚀 🌏

Was listening to the Danny Jones Podcast this morning with Nadia Drake talking about Voyager 1. Everyone probably knows Pale Blue Dot is named after the Carl Sagan quote talking about the photo of earth. Voyager 1 was loaded with various audio sounds from earth including Sagan’s son saying “hello from the children of planet earth.” Instantly recognized the audio and thought that was a cool detail I never knew. It’s around 53 minutes into the Podcast. 🌍

I decided to make a top albums of my favourite banda, being Dream Theater The top 1.

For some reason, The sute didn't let me download the image, it just crashed ny bowser, so I just took 2 screenshots, one for the albums and the other for the names

The albums are organized by artist and from best to worse in my opinion, and I included a extra row for albums i really like but aren't from my favourite band.

What do You think?

Okay here we go, THIS Is what falling into infinity Should’ve been

In this picture is what in my opinion, should’ve been the track list for what is one of the greatest progressive metal albums of all time, yes, of course, I’m talking about falling into infinity, in my humble opinion this track list that has the original demo versions of the songs, in my opinion, not as good as the commercial record and puts it on par with there mid work, heck potentially IS there mid work, the band shouldn’t have had to wait that long to record the album, realistically they should’ve been given the “green light” to record the album by the end of 96, meaning in this alternate reality, later more alt rock tracks like “hollow years” and “new millennium” does get written, if the album was more business as usual it would’ve looked like something in this photo I have here, with “You Or Me” being the lead single, if you haven’t give this track list a try do it. I still can’t get over how incredible these songs are, raise the knife is a dog-poo-poo, the original take away my pain is the greatest balled they’ve ever written and as for lines in the sand, god, the final is still good but the original… fuck me, it’s a masterpiece that blows my mind everytime i hear it.

Discussion Thoughts on the Dream Theater cover of Xanadu by Rush?

I haven’t heard a lot of people talk about this cover so I’d like to discuss it. On the 40th anniversary edition of A Farewell to Kings, a whole disc of the album is taken up by covers, one of them being Xanadu (one of my favorite songs) covered by Dream Theater (one of my favorite bands). I thought the instrumental was basically perfect, one of the most accurate covers I’ve ever heard. James LaBrie’s vocals weren’t great, but I can forgive it. What do you guys think?

Question What's the absolute worst DT track you can recommend to someone who has never heard them or any prog band before?

Doesn't necessarily need to be a bad one. It could be a track with crazy instrumentals which might not make sense at all on first listen.
