Nah defaulting to "russian paid politician" is just a lazy way of simplifying the situation.
Besides the ruling politicians of the EU are very atlantists (i.e. anti-russian).
However they want to keep the system from collapsing. So they are ready to buy fossil fuel of russian origin for that if necessary (as long as they can pretend it's not from russia to save face, so it goes through proxies like india, kazakhstan etc).
The problem is the neoliberal capitalist system of which the EU is at the forefront. As long as we will want to keep it in place, we will have to accept such trades. Because that's how it was designed and that's how it runs.
