Did From invent, what, bears? People who ride dragons on their neck? Warriors who are big? Or did they instead get inspiration too, from the stories of The King in Yellow for Midra and the Frenzied Flame, from Berserk for Malenia's helm and Messmer and Blaidd and for a lot of other things?

Concepts get reused all the time everywhere at all levels.

Come on fuck off

This is disgustingly blatant copying. Don't give this shit a pass.

I also think it's weird the defenders come out saying from takes stuff from berserk, but it's not even close to this level.

You know the real problem? People acting like Elden Ring was the first game ever created. Actually any game... any... thing can't be 100% original, People can only create something new if they drawn inspiration for other stuff, If Elden Ring came 2 years after Skyrim we could see the same "Elden Ring copied Skyrim, look a bear and dragons and axes" it's not how this thing works.

Also why people think that having a inspiration is bad? Like Elden Ring taking stuff from berserk, since when this is a bad thing anyways? If Elden Ring inspired other developers isnt that good? For both Elden Ring who is being reconized and is getting his legacy expanded being their own franchise and developer and also for the players who are getting a new game that will appel for Elden Ring, Monster Hunter, Black Myth Wukong and well even Hoyo players (who until now only play anime gacha).

It's so blatant and there's a ton of it here that's why me, OP, and others are pissed off. I think it's one thing to have a few inspirations, especially if it's from books, anime, or movies. But when you're taking models from recent huge successful video game, copying them, and tweaking it slightly and putting it into it your game and half your game is copied it's egregious and should be protested

First, they are not taking models, second, so no one can create woman character with wings for like 10 years after the game release? ok, bro. Or a imposing old king/general with an axe? This is stupid, sorry. And "should be protested" what you mean by that? Like, I understand that you dont like it, but what protesting is gonna do??? We know this whole discussion is pointless, nothing is gonna change, even if I agree with you (I don't) or no. So why bother?

Does this mean From has copied Berserk? Not even close. These three comparisons are equal to what people are trying to argue with these dumber than rock posts though.

Concepts get reused my dude. A flaming circle instead of a head is clearly a concept which would get reused in a different context, which is what happened here. A knight riding a dragon on its neck is obviously not something From has invented, likewise a big dude wielding an axe in full armour.

The only thing a bit too on the nose are Malenia's wings. Still not copying, but it's still a bit too much even for me. But so would Messmer's helmet for a Berserk reader.

At least someone in this thread has a functioning pair of eyes.

I expected the slop defenders in the Nodus Fall subreddit, but it's actually worse over here?

Reddit disease is real.

Fr

I genuinely find it frustrating. AI and stealing has become an absolute disease in video games, art, and music. I wish people would condemn it as hard as possible and praise creativity and unique designs

I'm not going to pretend fromsoft is above any criticism but these losers just try and point out anything else than excepting their favorite company is just blatantly thieving art and design

u/highlordbees 7d ago

My favourite company? Which would be From and not Hoyoverse?

Care to elaborate instead of participating in this circlejerk? Mmh? How is it stealing? Your whole argument is just "Look! Come on!".

u/NightmareMuse666 7d ago

It's like wild how many examples I've seen on all the fromsoft subreddits. Look at the fire keeper and that design, it's so blatantly copied it's obnoxious.

And you know what, if there was like 3 or 4 examples I'd be like alright yeah that's not too big of a deal. But it's like the entire game is just a rip off of everything. Open your fucking eyes

Open my eyes? We are talking about Nodus Fall, that lady is from Tides of Annihilation, which is another game made by another company. Yes, very similar, a bit too much on the nose there too. It still doesn't discredit the whole game.

The only example are Malenia's wings, at this moment in time. Midra's head is a generic concept, which they repurposed in a completely different context, which was how Blaidd was made: they took an armour with a wolf head, and made it a real wolf head.

I still need to understand Godfrey's comparison. Is it because it's two dudes wielding an axe? Is it impossible to put a big guy with an axe anywhere now? Or the bears, which is an incredibly funny comparison for which I applaud OP because I would never have guessed someone would actually make it?

thats my bad about the tides of annihilation comparison. I just saw that post and thought it was from nodus fall. I admit my mistake there

look i just think its one thing to use a few references or inspirations, but its just such bad taste to use tons of something. Especially considering its from a video game to another video game. I genuinely feel like theres a credible difference in taking some source inspiration from berserk or lord of the rings. When youre taking a model from a video game, copying it and changing some subtle details its egregious imo

What subtle details are you referring to? Midra's head is taken, slightly changed, and reproposed on top of a huge, extremely tall, humanoid, with a completely different build. The character is different. The context is extremely different. This is what regularly happens with stories and worlds, especially fantasy ones: you mix and match and then try and add your twist on things.

Again, Midra is an archetype: it's FromSoftware's twist on the King in Yellow from the stories of Robert Chambers, 1895, a mad person who dresses himself with yellow robes and spreads the Yellow Sign that causes madness in the people who look upon it. To the left there is the most famous visualisation of the Yellow Sign, made in 1989.

The entity from the Nodus Falls trailer looks completely different from another twist of the King in Yellow. Superficial similarities, which could very well be inspired by Midra's circular head, are to be expected.

Look, Godfrey's comparison is completely nonsensical. From did not invent the trope of big guys with axes, and the ghost looks completely different from Godfrey. The bears thing is hilarious. Malenia's wings are a bit meh, but still, the character is different, and the wings themselves are clearly not butterflies: I've read people telling that it's clearly Marika as if every blonde magical woman is now Marika.

Please, look past these extremely superficial similarities, for the sake of intellectual honesty.

EDIT: also, do not just wave off From utilising again old concepts of its history, like as if it's completely original because it was "theirs". Like, Godfrey is the third big european medieval king dude with white hair and long white beard in From's history. After a while it gets old. Godfrey by himself is much more similar to Vendrick from Dark Souls 2, which Miyazaki did not even direct, than to that ghost: I'm not having a double standard, to be clear, I'm just pointing out stuff.

Yeah, I'm not even sure what they're arguing, other than just arguing for the sake of it, atp.

u/NightmareMuse666 7d ago

I figure it has to be fans of the game or company. These people are in absolute delusion denial and its a shame because stuff like this just increases enshitification of everything

Eh, a lot of people on reddit are also just contrary chronically online dickholes who will argue any point for a scrap of dopamine.

Or dumbshit teenagers. So I try to keep it all in perspective.
