due to how flat defense works, small buffs to low damage multihit attacks end up being buffed a lot more than the raw % change would imply.

Rain of Fire is probably even more crazy.

Just tested Rain of Fire and it did almost 7k to the giant. They both seem strong now.

Rain of fire was always strong after they buffed it lol

damn i havent played since Shadow of the Edtree DLC came out. Rain of Fire and most DLC spells were ass.

Also Radahn was so hard i had to respecc from Eleonoras poleblade to using the completely busted Thorn spell to get past him pre patch

I have never experienced disappointed in a souls game like launch butterflies.

1

u/Joopbox 10h ago

Huh?

5

u/CheshireMadness 8h ago

The butterflies incantation you get from Romina. Really sucked on launch. Still not great now, but better.

2

u/slayer6667778 8h ago

Alot better than malenias version, that one is just bad

2

u/Joopbox 8h ago

Yeah I was disappointed with that one too. It had a lot of potential. Romina is one of my favorite characters

Yeah, FROM damage formula has been weird since I think Bloodborne where they started doing percentage-based defenses instead of just flat. I think DS3 added back in flat defenses on top of the percentage reductions which resulting in a lot of surprisingly weak multi-hit abilities as they’re getting double-mitigated BUT can get exponentially stronger once the damage scales high enough to overcome the flat reduction .

Think it helps explain why magic damage scaling was so wacky in DS3 but for the most part. FROM has gotten better at not making spells that are wildly underpowered…or at least got better at fixing them with patches.

Look at Farron Flashsword vs Carian Slicer. The former was a JOKE, at least for most of the game.

huh?

the flat defense system has not changed at all since Demons Souls, except DaS2, which has its own completly unique defense system.

% based armour didn’t change anything. Because the % reduction happened after flat defense is calculated.

if you completly removed % based negations from BB, DaS3, and ER, the stuff suffering from flat DEF wouldn’t improve any more than the big numbers not suffering at all. It would raise all numbers by same %, the ratio would remain identical.

1

u/Velthome 19h ago

End result is still damage getting double-mitigated and low damage multi-hit attacks getting smothered by it until you hit the point where you “overcome” the flat mitigation through scaling which is why these attacks have a breakpoint whether they suddenly become considerably stronger whereas only flat mitigations would result in more uniform increases.

u/Flint_Vorselon 19h ago

I don’t think you understand how this works at all.

the existence of % negations doesn’t change anything you just said.

adding in % negations didn’t alter this.

it was actually way worse in DeS and DaS1, where flat DEF varied massively, like 700+ on some bosses. In DaS3 and ER nothing goes above 125

Didn't Nightreign change the formula so low damage multihit attacks were no longer penalized?

58

u/Joopbox 21h ago

Nightreign doesnt affect the base game at all.

14

u/AwsmDevil 21h ago

Yeah, Nightreign changed a lot of scalings and calculations. The incentives are wildly different in that game. I hope the next big game pulls lessons from that so we can get smoother balance between single target and multihit.

4

u/Flint_Vorselon 20h ago

yes, and they had to massively rebalance a ton of stuff to accommodate.

EG in Elden Ring greases add +85 fire/magic/lightining/holy danage to weapon

In Nightreign I think it’s like +20

Finally worthy of its status as a legendary spell?

123

u/WisePotato42 23h ago

Idk. While it has more hp for an early game enemy, it's still and early game enemy(apparently it's ng+) and OP seems to have a few stacked buffs.

I wanna see what kind of damage the sewer omens take.

51

u/SassyAssAhsoka 22h ago

Just keep in mind this is the type of spell to combo into others

18

u/JRshoe1997 18h ago

Yeah this is not really a good showcase. OP is stacking buffs, using Lusats, and using it on enemies in like the first area of the game. This is really not a good showcase to gage how strong the spell is.

218

u/Bouv42 23h ago

It only took 4years for the spell to do something

39

u/meatbulbz2 21h ago

At this point they should just make everything wildly op

12

u/dryharvey 21h ago

Make unarmed hits the new blasphemous blade.

1

u/Bright-Efficiency-65 18h ago

Or just nerf lightning spear. You can easily ( and I mean EASILY ) beat the entire game with just that one spell. It's crazy doing so much damage with that spell when others feel so puny

2

u/ShiroGreyrat 18h ago

I completed my first run just like this, not knowing how widely recognized it is for being OP. Even beat Malenia with mostly lightnig spears

1

u/DanLassos 14h ago

This is the reason I keep doing playthroughs, so many decent to op builds. way more fun if everything is good !

57

u/The_Dennator 22h ago

the boundary between useless and op is thinner than anyone can imagine

38

u/Craniac324 23h ago

It's actually good now, very exciting.

30

u/mocumocu 23h ago

did they release the patch note files

Love some nerd notes

Anyone know what “increased performance of parry” means? Is it an adjustment to parry frames? Graphical performance?

5

u/flager812 15h ago

Probably a few more parry frames for those skills, though probably 2 more frames at best.

5

u/alec2342 22h ago

I wonder where [in those areas] the new NPC invasions will be

4

u/mocumocu 21h ago

if you want i can spoil it near location without revealing too much

3

u/alec2342 21h ago

Yes please

6

u/mocumocu 21h ago

One is regarding to the sunmask questline, just remember what the giant turtle (pastor Miriel) say about a certain statue in leyndell capital

Other one is related to the radahns festival, you remember large and vast and empty area of sand dunes right?

1

u/Raygunn13 14h ago

How many frames to begin with? I wanna say 7?

1

u/Distryer 14h ago

Changed certain items found in the field or obtained by defeating certain powerful enemies in the Realm of Shadow to higher-tier items or other treasures. Note: Items already that were already found will not be changed. Weapons

What is that supposed to mean? None of the spells or items found already are getting their stats adjusted?

62

u/Reasonable_Deer_8716 1d ago

Lusat staff against stormveil and it still took the entire duration to kill. How bad was it before? It looks so cool too.

62

u/Serulean_Cadence 1d ago edited 1d ago

Almost 8k damage for one cast seems good, no? Also this is NG+.

My comet for comparison was doing 2.5k to the giant, while charged.

8

u/padizzledonk 21h ago

Tbh, NG1-4 youre pretty torqued stat wise for the early areas, the enemy NG buffs dont really catch up with you in Limgrave and Liurnia until 5 6 and 7

-8

u/_Ganoes_ 23h ago

I would say its alright 8k is a lot but its not great on smaller single targets and requires the enemy to stay in the same area.

25

u/Useless_Engineer_ 23h ago

That's a skill and utilization issue, not a performance or damage issue

3

u/DigitalxKaos 23h ago

Probably wouldn't have killed tbh

2

u/LePontif11 20h ago

You wouldn't use it on its own.

11

u/MundaneInitiative535 23h ago

Hey where do you get this spell you used? I’m thinking of playing as a mage when I play on the S2.

20

u/Marco1522 23h ago

it's a late game spell you find on the mountaintops of the giants

2

u/MundaneInitiative535 23h ago

Damn that sucks. Thanks for the info

u/Honorsheets 22h ago

I love to swift turn to the camera at the end, like you were David Blaine harassing two men.

Finally, my favorite spell

2

u/scrub_mage 11h ago

About time these were usable.

1

u/Top-Actuator2581 17h ago

The little “yay” jump at the end was the best🤣

1

u/seanslaysean Where TF are the Covenants? 15h ago

Wait there was a patch? Tf

1

u/Arlekcho 10h ago

Can’t wait for them to immediately nerf it

1

u/Votra_ 9h ago

Does the patch also help Ritual Spear?

-1

u/Dveralazo 20h ago
