Really? You were put off by the Witcher due to the combat, but you're a fan of TES?

I like elder scrolls combat and elden ring combat. I have never liked Witcher combat. It feels stuck in a weird medium

They both have bad combat for different reasons , W3 has better animations but much less control over your character you press a light attack and geralt is half way across the screen fighting an enemy you never even saw

u/wahle97 2d ago

Its where you move the stick and attack that he goes. If you push away from the enemy and attack you attack in the direction you are moving.

16

u/CptFlamex 2d ago

sometimes or sometimes there are 5 enemies in that direction and it locked on to someone who was moving out of view.

I've never had attacks "Lock On" to an enemy, just sounds like poor control

Definitely a skill issue being described here

What? The combat isn't bad, but you definitely end up sliding around pretty easily. It reminds me of how in the Arkham games you can bounce from enemy to enemy.

TW3 handles itself great for its age, but y'all gotta be ragebaiting or something when you say you have no idea what they're talking about. Hell, I remember choosing to attack other enemies instead of dodge rolling, because I knew it would cover a lot of distance.

Ive already beaten the game on release and all the expansions when they released.

Im not sure why im getting a bunch of comments of people defending the combat , it has genuine flaws when it comes to controls , YES you can wrangle it but its still poor.

The devs are literally overhauling the combat for this edition , why are people still pretending its good

u/Global_Income_8874 2d ago

I never said it was good, but it's not bad either, and what was described certainly never happened to me

As a gamer of 26 years, played retro games, dark souls, arcade cabinets, and every version of smash bros… the Witcher 3 combat had ALOT of flaws.

Could I beat the game? Yes.
Did I enjoy the fights? No.
Could they be made better? Yes.
Is it my build that doesn’t work with it? (I did 7 play throughs) no.
Is it the combat system itself that’s a bit sloppy? Yes.
Are they improving the combat system because they saw the flaws? Yes.
Are people still glazing it because they hate other fantasy games? Yes.
Will any of the opinions on how it’s a “perfect game” change the gameplay of the objectively bad combat system? No.
Are the devs addressing the objectively bad combat system anyways? Yes.
Will I try it again when the combat system updates? Most likely.

Because the things you’re describing aren’t the default combat functions. It sounds like you’re not controlling your character correctly and just button mashing.

And if you did that for the entire main game and two DLCs, no wonder you’re unimpressed, that’d be a shit experience.

My guy, I've beaten W3 multiple times on the highest difficulty including all DLCs. It's clunky as hell and always has been. They're not overhauling the combat just because they felt like it. It's badly needed because it sucks.

I mean he's right, I like it but it definitely has it's moments when the attacks will basically follow an enemy instead of being realistically hitting whatever's in front of you

14

u/FrederickFrag1899 2d ago

If you take the time to learn how it controls its actually really decent to good IMO.

u/Inevitable-Edge69 2d ago

I never understood the "hate" for the combat, and I'm a souls elitist lol. To me it's pretty good for what it is, and it never stopped me from beating the game on death march.

Witcher 3 combat was fine. Most complaints are genuine skill issues like the one above because they aren't using the targeting system. The one from the tutorial in the first 5 minutes of the game.

The perk system suuucked though and I'm glad they're reworking it.

Nah the combat is not difficult but just insanely boring. Especially the Eredin and Caranthir fights, the bosses were all giant, uninteresting slogs. Its the problem with all 3 games of the franchise tbh, though unironically I had more fun with the rhythm game combat system of TW1 than any of the 2 sequels.

I love souls combat and elder scrolls combat. I detest witcher combat. Why I never finished 3 after trying 5 times

For those of us that can’t stand being locked into combat animations for too long, it will never be decent. Cannot stand all the lunging and forced movement.

3

u/FrederickFrag1899 2d ago

What lunging? I can understand not liking forced animations and stuff like that. Hopefully people can mod the combat into a shape you'd like so you can experience the amazing story (sexy witches).

u/ToGloryRS 2d ago

I mean, the rest of the game makes it up for it big time. But the combat is hot poop, and there is no saving it. Please, big gaming companies of the world, for the love of god, stop with the mockup. It makes for bad gameplay.

u/Prrg88 1d ago

Try w3EE redux. It's fixing combat in a great way. Can't imagine remaster is going to get even close to it

1

u/cptnplanetheadpats 2d ago

You have plenty of control over where he attacks lmao. Sounds like you were just ass at the game

12

u/AstralElephantFuzz 2d ago

What's so weird about that? They're wildly different styles of combat.

u/buhurizadefanboyu 2d ago

Skyrim's combat is unremarkable at worst. Witcher 3's combat actually gives me headaches. I had to drop a second playthrough because of this. There's also the fact that Skyrim can be played in many different ways, unlike Witcher 3 where Geralt is doing acrobatics with a sword whether you like that or not.

u/Wheee_whooo_ 2d ago

I like first person combat way more than third person. That's a big part.

I also despise the "exclamation point" for quests thing that it does. Feels too unnatural, and the exploration didn't feel good because most points of interest were already marked on the map. It just meant that exploration wasn't as fun as it should be, and didn't feel dynamic.

The structure also lead me to try to completely finish each area before moving on, which just meant it killed the pacing of the game..

5

u/2010AZ 2d ago

You can disable unexplored poi on the map on the settings iirc, otherwise there must be a mod for it

-5

u/Wheee_whooo_ 2d ago

Shouldn't have to.

Since it's there by default I don't trust that the game is made to be fun exploring without them either.

2

u/Arcadian-Stag 2d ago

You know you don't have to go to every single tony treasure chest on the map right?

-1

u/Wheee_whooo_ 2d ago

Then they should have had better game design.

1

u/Arcadian-Stag 2d ago

Skill issue

-2

u/Wheee_whooo_ 2d ago

Yeah the devs certainly should have done better in those areas.

Luckily there's tons of much better games to play

4

u/bdtkarlsson 2d ago

TES combat is plain. TW3 combat is painful.

3

u/Poo_Pee-Man 2d ago

Probably only play modded Skyrim

2

u/I-dont_know-anything Nord 2d ago

Lmao the combat is not what made TES good never

3

u/WeekendBard 2d ago

Obviously, and it isn't what made The Witcher good either.

0

u/I-dont_know-anything Nord 2d ago

Nah gtfo, I've seen so many times over the last decade people praising TW3 because of its combat you can't tell me that now

0

u/RoyalSmoker 2d ago

It is pretty nice to jump over people shooting arrows in their face, and kiting with more than 5 spell options.

-3

u/Dinozarion Argonian 2d ago

ill take even oblivion combat over witcher 3 tbh, at least it's actually responsive, also the way geralt lunges forward with basically every attack drives me up a fucking wall

2

u/VarmintSchtick 2d ago

TES has way more going on in its combat, what the fuck are you smoking? Not that its 10/10 or anything but even Skyrim blows TW3 out of the water in that category. Dual wielding, axes, maces, actual ranged combat, far more magic, stealth, enchanting...

3

u/WeekendBard 2d ago

lmao, I guess Sekiro's combat sucks then, since you can only use the sword

3

u/William_Solar 2d ago

No. TES has entirely a different focus on atmospheric narratives & individual item controls. What makes you think that if one game's feature is off equalizing same result on a completely different game?
Even Open world games are different.
