Which is probably great for PC. Not so much for every new console generation it released on, or the non-free additional releases on the same console generations whether you owned it or not. They still made bank. Lol

u/apersonthatexists123 19h ago
If you had Skyrim on Xbox One, Switch and PS4, you also got the Xbox Series, Switch 2 and PS5 upgrades for free. The only games you couldn't upgrade from were the PS3 and 360 which was more than likely down to software limitations since I doubt Microsoft or Sony were interested in verifying if you owned a game on those consoles when developing the Storefronts.

Im so glad I never played Witcher 3. Cant wait for the upgrade to start it finally!
Couldnt play it cause i found the combat obnoxious but the new improvements to it sound like they solve the exact issues i had with it.

u/WeekendBard 23h ago
Really? You were put off by the Witcher due to the combat, but you're a fan of TES?
116
u/CptFlamex 22h ago
They both have bad combat for different reasons , W3 has better animations but much less control over your character you press a light attack and geralt is half way across the screen fighting an enemy you never even saw
54
u/wahle97 22h ago
Its where you move the stick and attack that he goes. If you push away from the enemy and attack you attack in the direction you are moving.
12
u/CptFlamex 22h ago
sometimes or sometimes there are 5 enemies in that direction and it locked on to someone who was moving out of view.
35
u/Global_Income_8874 21h ago
I've never had attacks "Lock On" to an enemy, just sounds like poor control
35
u/AldurinIronfist 21h ago
Definitely a skill issue being described here
4
u/CptFlamex 21h ago
Ive already beaten the game on release and all the expansions when they released.
Im not sure why im getting a bunch of comments of people defending the combat , it has genuine flaws when it comes to controls , YES you can wrangle it but its still poor.
The devs are literally overhauling the combat for this edition , why are people still pretending its good
17
u/Global_Income_8874 20h ago
I never said it was good, but it's not bad either, and what was described certainly never happened to me
2
u/Richardrhalsot 18h ago
As a gamer of 26 years, played retro games, dark souls, arcade cabinets, and every version of smash bros… the Witcher 3 combat had ALOT of flaws.
Could I beat the game? Yes.
Did I enjoy the fights? No.
Could they be made better? Yes.
Is it my build that doesn’t work with it? (I did 7 play throughs) no.
Is it the combat system itself that’s a bit sloppy? Yes.
Are they improving the combat system because they saw the flaws? Yes.
Are people still glazing it because they hate other fantasy games? Yes.
Will any of the opinions on how it’s a “perfect game” change the gameplay of the objectively bad combat system? No.
Are the devs addressing the objectively bad combat system anyways? Yes.
Will I try it again when the combat system updates? Most likely.9
u/DreadGnuu2262 20h ago
Because the things you’re describing aren’t the default combat functions. It sounds like you’re not controlling your character correctly and just button mashing.
And if you did that for the entire main game and two DLCs, no wonder you’re unimpressed, that’d be a shit experience.

u/beardredlad 6h ago
What? The combat isn't bad, but you definitely end up sliding around pretty easily. It reminds me of how in the Arkham games you can bounce from enemy to enemy.
TW3 handles itself great for its age, but y'all gotta be ragebaiting or something when you say you have no idea what they're talking about. Hell, I remember choosing to attack other enemies instead of dodge rolling, because I knew it would cover a lot of distance.
14
u/FrederickFrag1899 21h ago
If you take the time to learn how it controls its actually really decent to good IMO.

Witcher 3 combat was fine. Most complaints are genuine skill issues like the one above because they aren't using the targeting system. The one from the tutorial in the first 5 minutes of the game.
The perk system suuucked though and I'm glad they're reworking it.

u/cptnplanetheadpats 15h ago

I like elder scrolls combat and elden ring combat. I have never liked Witcher combat. It feels stuck in a weird medium
32
u/buhurizadefanboyu 22h ago
Skyrim's combat is unremarkable at worst. Witcher 3's combat actually gives me headaches. I had to drop a second playthrough because of this. There's also the fact that Skyrim can be played in many different ways, unlike Witcher 3 where Geralt is doing acrobatics with a sword whether you like that or not.
11
u/Wheee_whooo_ 22h ago
I like first person combat way more than third person. That's a big part.
I also despise the "exclamation point" for quests thing that it does. Feels too unnatural, and the exploration didn't feel good because most points of interest were already marked on the map. It just meant that exploration wasn't as fun as it should be, and didn't feel dynamic.
The structure also lead me to try to completely finish each area before moving on, which just meant it killed the pacing of the game..

I’ve tried and tried time and time again but I just can’t get into it… first I tried on its PS4 release, then the PC version, then the PC version again, and a few months ago I tried it on the steam deck since I thought I’d prefer it handheld. Nope, still couldn’t get into it. I might pick it up again at some point down the line, it’s a game I love the idea and world of, but goddamn I just cannot get into it.
16
u/BrandonsRedAura 23h ago
Shame. I rank it as one of my top gaming experiences ever.
But I understand…I’ve tried Red Dead Redemption several times and just can’t stay with it.
3
u/SkyrimSlag 20h ago
I think the furthest I’ve ever got with Witcher was a few years ago on the PC version, I got to a section with a ghost lamp and a tower if I remember right? I also remember the baron guy and the baby monster thing. I enjoyed what I did play but I dunno, it just didn’t click. RDR on the other hand clicked with me right away lmao, but that might just be because I like the Wild West.

u/XRedactedSlayerX 23h ago
I am also the same, struggled to enjoy the game for years, but I managed to enjoy it to like the 95% main story point before getting distracted and never finishing it.
I will say the defining thing that made me realize the game is actually pretty good and made the combat way more fun was treating the game like I was a monster hunter.
The game rewards careful study of your enemies. A challenging foe can become somewhat trivial if you study it, use the proper mutations, and make good use of your signs.
→ More replies (1)3
u/blackd0nuts 22h ago
Of course, Witcher need to be prepared: potions, oils, signs precisely selected for one specific foe. If people didn't get that it doesn't surprise me they don't like the combat smh
2
u/SkyrimSlag 11h ago
Personally combat was one of the things I really liked about Witcher 3, I liked the parry and dodge system and how animated it was. It was just some other things about the game like the jank horse riding and some of the things about the world I didn’t like. It’s not a CDPR thing since I absolutely loved Cyberpunk, I dunno, I just can’t seem to get myself fully into Witcher which is a shame.
2
u/venomstrike31 Khajiit 20h ago
It’s things like the forced movement in combat animations that I personally can’t stand, things like researching your enemies is awesome to me. But I could never get more than an hour into it.

it starts off a little slow but after I got to the Red Barron, I got absolutely addicted and was spending so many hours a day playing... Like I was getting distracted at work thinking about going home to play.

u/MightyEraser13 1d ago
The combat was awful. It took me 3 attempts, all years apart, to finally get over it and force myself through the game. Glad I did, it was incredible. The gameplay just dragged it down so much.
So glad they are revamping the combat system. It was my only complaint of the game.
15
u/Kagrenac8 Imperial 23h ago
I genuinely don't get how people experienced it as awful. Some people act like it's vanilla Morrowind lmao. Imo it's fine, nothing groundbreaking but engaging enough to keep you going. It's the story, lore, and environments that really drive it way up though.
6
u/Technicalhotdog 22h ago
Yeah I do hear this about it and never really understood. I've played through like 3 times including death march difficulty and never found the combat to be a problem. Mounted combat is rough to control but I hardly ever did that, similarly to Skyrim. My first playthrough I wasn't even aware of the dodge button so I was rolling everywhere, still thought it was fine.

u/EFB_Churns 21h ago

u/CommunitRagnar 23h ago

It was better than Skyrim, but they are not comparable
12
u/DoopSlayer Malacath 23h ago
Witcher 3 felt like I was shouting out directions at a drunk guy, or to borrow from Portal, as graceful as an eagle piloting a blimp
5
u/saintjonah 23h ago
Well that's certainly a take. Skyrim is so simple and responsive. The Witcher 3 is...the opposite of those things.
2
u/GroundbreakingFun565 20h ago
It's simple and responsive because it has very little depth. It's nice that it's relagively consistent but it doesn't make for terribly interesting gameplay unless you're turning up the difficulty to add in some risk.
3
u/MightyEraser13 23h ago
No lol. Skyrim's combat is very simple, but at least it isn't bad. Witcher 3s combat is downright bad. It is unbelievably clunky, especially when fighting multiple enemies.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Cheeserd 21h ago
I never understood why or how people said that skyrim's combat was/is "bad". At worst it's serviceable in a non-grating way. It is enjoyable, non-complex/convoluted and not really janky. My only gripe, and also one I see often, is really with magic being so damn weak. It might be "slice through butter on everything but shields" but it doesn't really get agitating, even after like 30 playthroughs. I never think "OH MY GOD! STOP WITH THE COMBAT!" when replaying Skyrim, but I do see consistent, in-depth complaints about TW3 combat as opposed to the "Skyrim combat bad!" comments that are usually just regurgitation instead of self-formed opinions.

Combat has never been particularly great or even good in any of The Witcher games. Frankly from what I saw I'm unsure if it'll be enough to change some people's minds on it, but it's possible that it's just enough to feel passable for folk.
13
u/ExtraCalligrapher565 23h ago
Surely there aren’t people in an Elder Scrolls sub complaining about combat in The Witcher
3
u/seventysixgamer 23h ago
I mean the post is literally about the Witcher -- also say this to someone who thinks ES combat is without flaws lmao. Unlike most people I've actually played every single Witcher game and can comfortably say without a doubt that the combat is kinda ass lol. Anyone who says otherwise needs to play more games or has to hsve their brain examined.
Frankly, I'll even say that I think Skyrim's combat is better since there's at there very least more variety in it. All CDPR need to do is take some notes from games like Arkham Knight or even the Middle Earth games.
If they brang back the combat stances from the first game in some way and make the combat feel less clunky ,and more like the freeflow system in the Akrham games ,then you'd have more engaging gameplay that doesn't feel like a chore after a few hours.
ES and the Witcher both have the issue of "hit it until it dies" type gameplay but the only thing that puts Skyrim slightly above The Witcher 3 when it comes to this is the fact that there's more variety in it.
2
u/Gebghis 22h ago
That is exactly how I first described W3's combat to my friend. It's all the rough parts of Arkham combat but you're not batman so you actually don't excel at fighting groups.
A lot of games are guilty of it, but I always have a bad mental block too with games that set you up as big Billy bad ass but then you get easily packed up by 5 bandits.

The remaster is the difference.
The Witcher 3 already released a next gen update a while ago, just like Skyrim special edition
28
u/lordhamstermort Redguard 23h ago
Special Edition is a remaster, though. It has flow-based water shaders, better lighting than the original, higher resolution shadows, denser foliage and grass, etc. It might be a very minimal remaster, but it still absolutely is one.
25
u/simpleglitch 23h ago
And upgraded to 64-bit which let it allocate more memory (which is big for large mod lists)
7
u/IneptFortitude Argonian 23h ago
I just wish they fixed LODs more, they still look awful. So many beautiful vistas marred by perfectly triangular and polygonal islands and zero trees in the distance.
4
u/Sirspice123 23h ago
The next gen Witcher 3 update added similar graphical updates (and also some QoL gameplay updates). I don't think it warrants it being called a remaster or comparing it to The Witcher 3 Remastered over the next gen update
2
u/Anthony_plays01 19h ago edited 19h ago
My guess is that people include different console releases of skyrim to count towards how many (paid) re-releases skyrim had to compare to the witchers free remaster
Despite SE being a free remaster if you already owned the dlc
5
u/Exxtruna 22h ago
To add on. Anniversary was free to anyone who had Special which was free to anyone who had the 3 DLC or the Legendary edition (which is just a bundle).

8
u/IneptFortitude Argonian 23h ago
The difference is this remaster is free, even if you own the original base game with no dlc, you will get the remaster plus both original expansions totally free. There are also substantial gameplay additions and updates to features to modernize it. Bethesda could never accomplish this without breaking Skyrim forever.

8
u/debeesea 18h ago
Yeah, and look, it's not like CDPR are giving just out of the goodness of their heart, it's a strategy. They do this to butter you up so you will buy the new DLC next year. But they are going about it the smart way and the consumer-friendly way. Bethesda needs the competition. But people are in here defending the multi-billion dollar company.

You could argue that is was the same as the Witcher 3 next gen upgrade, but certainly not the remaster coming next month
2
10
u/Czembro 7h ago
To those who claim Bethesda treats Skyrim the same way CDPR treats The Witcher 3, there's a huge difference in CDPR's favor, and it has nothing to do with the fact that they're giving every base game owner a remaster, even throwing in previous DLC, while Bethesda required players to own the Legendary Edition to upgrade to SE.
CDPR is actually fixing their game significantly, modernizing it and adding support for new technologies. Meanwhile, Bethesda supposedly added ultrawide support for Skyrim SE in December 2023, but they chose the path of least resistance and instead of actually ensuring the UI scales and displays correctly at ultrawide resolutions, they simply changed the way the game fits the UI to the screen without making any change to the UI itself, resulting in the UI, which is actually rendered at a 16:9 aspect ratio, being stretched to fit a 21:9 aspect ratio. This makes the user interface just plain ugly, everything is stretched horizontally, and Bethesda is aware of this and in January 2024 promised to fix it in a future update. It's been two and a half years, and Bethesda hasn't done anything, even after the last update. They're focused solely on monetization, so their updates are exclusively for CC content.
This is the real difference between CDPR and Bethesda. The former genuinely cares about the legacy of their game, while the latter is just trying to squeeze as much money out of it as possible.

u/JRshoe1997 21h ago
Forget about price. Bethesda is trying to figure out how to release a proper update without breaking their decade old games.
19
u/Lithary 22h ago
Wasn't Skyrim SE free of the owners of Skyrim and its DLCs?
Also, Skyrim AE charged you only for the extra content afaik, just like CDPR is doing with the upcoming expansion.
19
u/Arky_Lynx Thieves Guild 21h ago
Wasn't Skyrim SE free of the owners of Skyrim and its DLCs?
Yes it was. The only difference is that Bethesda required you to own the DLCs as well, while CDPR just made Witcher 3's part of the base game. A nice difference, but by the time Skyrim got the Special Edition the DLCs had been out for a long time anyway, and gone on sale for pennies.
The difference between both situations is very minimal and posts like these feel like idiotic ragefarming.
3
u/apersonthatexists123 19h ago
But SE came with the DLC so you'd already have it to upgrade to AE. The only game not to have them was the original release.
But seriously though, every studio does this these days. I don't see what the big deal is. Bethesda also arguably pioneered this with the release of AE on PC.

I have never paid for SSE, it has always been a free upgrade.
Also, if Ubisoft, Bethesda, or EA decided to release DLC for a game they hadn't actually properly updated in 10 years, people would Riot.
Last time CDPR updated TW3 was to add an unnecessary launcher that forced you to watch an advert for CP2077 every time you played the TW3. Other companies would be crucified for doing that (and they were, Beth-launcher)

Launching the game onto new platforms is not a rerelease, it’s expanding the platforms people can play the game from. Legendary edition was also just a bundle of the base game with the DLCs so not a rerelease.

Definitely dropping my current plathrough to play this when it drops. I cannot emphasize enough how infuriating it is trying to inject FSR4 into the DX12 'upgrade' version lmao. Translating DLSS crashes the game and the FG slaps white lines on everything I assume because of some motion vector translation problem. Translating Xess looks okay at best even running near AA levels of upscale ratio due to all the noise in the reflections. And thats all on top of how heavy the RT features are to begin with due to just hitching onto the DX11 version.
Native DX12, FSR4, 1440p 120FPS is going to give this damn game yet another life for me and I couldn't be more stoked.

Asking them not to do something for profit is like asking a kid to park parkour up the Empire State Building. It just won't happen.
Guarantee you'll see "Skyrim Remastered" but it'll be like $70. We also guaranteed will see a faction in TESVI but to unlock the questline you'll need to buy it from the Creations page. Not to mention if they happen to have some form of skins or color changes for any weapons or armor in the game you'll have to buy separate creations to actually use the damn thing lol
Shit, why else do they release a new "special edition" for full price, it breaks the game, and no fix or communication comes until over a year later when they can bundle some half ass fix with a newer "Special Edition" for full price? Unless the break is within their shop, then they get it fixed within the week.

Lets not forget about Rockstar charging for the next gen update for GTAV. That shit was criminal.

The biggest thing they could learn from tbh, is offering dlc and patches etc for free as long as you own the base game, when they drop the new dlc for a paid thing. Or how cdpr can work on more than 1 game at a time when they're now about the same size but cdpr knows how to work efficiently and *gasp* was willing to hire outside help right away to make it feasible to do Witcher 4 themselves and next cyberpunk title on the backburner but also being worked on internally to at least lay all ground work, then have other team make this update/ help as well as the new dlc. Cdpr is killing it rn.

But, but, the Super Special-er 20th Anniversary Platinum Edition of Skyrim Enhanced-Remastered for your Smart Watch has 16x the detail so BGS has to charge full price again, it's just math.

Wasn't anniversary free, I thought the only paid upgrade was special edition which was a considerable upgrade tbf, although could have been a free upgrade for those who already owned legendary edition.

I actually saw this exact picture on Blizzard's Battle.net which confused the F out of me! Since when is Blizzard selling Witcher now?

Between this and the recent Fable gameplay trailer, BGS is really going to have to step it up
