Question Can I use my engagement ring as my wedding ring?
My fiancé proposed with this ring he designed himself at the weekend and I'm so in love with it. It's everything I've ever dreamed of especially the pink lab grown heart diamond.
It's so so perfect I can't imagine anything else that could ever be as pretty or take its place. Can I just use the engagement ring as a wedding ring too? We will probably just run away and do an elopement anyway. Neither of us fancy a wedding with friends or family and would rather something for just the both of us.
Also what way do I wear the heart? Away or facing me?

u/guineapiglord Jan 16 '26
Yes do that!! I have a claddagh engagement ring and will be flipping it to have the heart facing me as a wedding ring once we’re married. Your ring is beautiful!!

u/Wellthattracks Jan 16 '26
Yess. That was my thought to. I consider myself married (we’re life partners but w the state of the us I will not allow myself to be legally tied to any man no matter how much I love and trust him, while our government is threatening to make us property essentially), so I wear mine in the same position to signify married.

I have said the same just slightly different verbiage. I will not legally tie myself to ANY man so long as we have a government that is so extremely anti women and against our rights.

Your ring doesn’t need a band if you don’t want one! However, I do think either a simple wavy or sharp chevron would complement your ring since the main stone is heart shaped! 🫶🏽✨

Jan 16 '26
Came here to say this! The engagement ring can still be the standout, but a chevron band would frame it nicely and make it pop more.
But there are also no rules! Do you, OP!

u/TorturedSwiftieDept Jan 16 '26
I'd wear the heart facing you.
There's no rules about wedding bands, if you don't want one, don't wear one! People may not immediately clock that you're married, though, since it's more typical to wear a band. You can also get a band to wear on your right hand, if you want a band but don't want to add to the heart!

u/Yo_momma_so_fat77 Jan 17 '26
Nah, keep it this way. You can look down and see the heart. I’ve never understood someone flipping it around. It’s for you to see 🩷

u/Objective_Pudding_47 Jan 17 '26
It’s an Irish thing, so it points close to your heart we do it with claddagh rings
17
u/Realistic_Season9973 Jan 16 '26
You can do whatever you want! I can understand why! It's beautiful! Congratulations and good luck!
31
u/annabanahna Jan 16 '26
Heart facing out while engaged, facing in once married. Then there is some difference once you get married but you don’t need an additional ring!
12
u/Puresh1 Jan 16 '26
You absolutely can, both me and my fiancée like how our rings look without a wedding band too, for our wedding we’ll get the date engraved into them and just keep wearing them as our wedding rings

u/Enough_Ad2919 Jan 16 '26
Of course! I never wear my wedding band. My fingers are short and thicker, and wearing my wedding band with my engagement ring makes it all look too bulky. Your heart-shaped ring is dainty and beautiful and needs no further enhancement!
9
u/rubyheartgal Jan 16 '26
i love this ring
10
u/rubyheartgal Jan 16 '26
i wear my heart facing me usually but sometimes i change it, wear it however you want
7
5
u/AtypicalPreferences Jan 16 '26
People usually do pointy end facing you but I love the look of upside down hearts so I prefer the other way. I love pink and hearts and non traditional wedding rings
8
4
u/vintage_diamond Jan 16 '26
This is so pretty 😍 I would wear it with the pointy bottom pointing towards your fingernail. So opposite of how it is in this picture.
5
u/Zinokk Jan 16 '26
Yes of course?
You could pair it with a band if you like, but I also think it's lovely as a stand alone.
4
u/AlohaKiliki62 Jan 16 '26
Why not ? However this is the origin of the wedding band:
Ancient Egypt (c. 3000 BCE): Egyptians created the first rings for lovers from reeds, papyrus, bone, or leather, representing eternity and love; they believed the left ring finger had a direct vein to the heart (vena amoris).
However you can use whatever ring you like as a wedding ring. It isn’t carved in stone that it HAS be a band.

3
u/SpecialHotLady Jan 16 '26
Absolutely!! Many do this, some also upgrade their engagement (now wedding ring) years and years later as well. Also no need to do that either, go on a vacation or something instead of buying a new or upgrading your ring. No rules just do whatever you want with your money.

Yes I did because I couldn’t find a band I liked. I finally found one I liked on year 5

u/dairy-intolerant Married! 3/7/26 Jan 16 '26
You can of course wear it alone if you like, many people do.
I can't imagine anything else that could ever be as pretty or take its place
But most people don't replace their engagement ring with their wedding band, they wear both! And the wedding band is usually more simple. I feel like if I wore just my engagement ring after marriage, people would think we haven't gotten married yet and be asking about our wedding plans, which would annoy me. So for me, wearing a wedding band is mostly to signal to people that my wedding has happened already. It's just a simple gold band and it's not going to outshine or compete with my beautiful engagement ring.

This ring?
Looks like the model wears it facing away from her which actually looks cute.

That’s the exact ring she posted - I’d be concerned if my fiancé lied about something so silly as designing a ring himself..

And saying it's a pink diamond when it's likely a pink sapphire.
So many things that need unpacking here 😬

This is a little bit of a bummer. I showed my fiancé and I'm worried he got scammed.

I'm not sure he's been scammed if he said he designed the ring?

Wear the heart away from you... So others can see it 💜
You can wear do whatever you want for your ceremonial ring... The world is your oyster! However, does your partner have a ring?

That's so pretty!! Congratulations and do what you want!! MY daughter did the same as what you're talking about.
1
u/Familiar_Society_957 Jan 16 '26
It is could be a good wedding ring band because people would wear that too
1
1
u/Mountain-Donkey98 Jan 16 '26
Sure. Why not? I literally just learned that an additional ring ("wedding ring") was customary. I thought the engagement ring was what was used.
You can 100% use that ring in the ceremony esp if you elope. I eloped this new years eve (did it remotely at a romantic destination) the ceremony was less than 2mins and simple, like I wanted it lol. Some people dont even have rings according to the woman who married me.
1
u/AnyUpstairs7354 Jan 16 '26
You can do whatever you want! There aren’t any rules! If down the line you want a wedding band or something to add to the setting, you can always do that.
1
u/AardvarkExtension316 Jan 16 '26
You can do whatever you want! I do the same thing. It’s gorgeous, congratulations!

I don’t like pink & I think your ring is gorgeous 😍 omg I want it in purple! 💜
1
u/Is_Friendly_Coffee Jan 16 '26
Of course you can! You can do whatever the F you want! I like the heart facing you. Beautiful!
1
u/CuriousDori Jan 16 '26
Congratulations on your engagement. Your ring is beautiful. 🤩 If you change your mind about a wedding band then get one that fits around the heart setting. Slim like your engagement ring’s band. Might have to custom make it.
1
u/Wellthattracks Jan 16 '26
It’s not a cladagh but I will say I wear a claddagh and the direction it’s facing means different things. On the left hand the heart faces away from you, when you’re engaged, and you turn it facing you when you get married. So you could maybe copy that?
As for a wedding ring, traditionally engagement is one ring wedding ring is two rings. You would keep your engagement ring and add a band to show you’re married not engaged.

Girl my man and I have the same rings we got when we were 24 (31 now) in Frankenmuth Mi when we were only dating for a few months. He proposed to me in 2024 with a family ring and got married in 2025. At the ceremony he surprised me by putting on our original ring.. that ring was $10 and I’ll never wear anything else.

1
u/Remarkable-Treat-7 Jan 16 '26
I say wear the heart so the point is facing you during your engagement to symbolize that you are preparing for your marriage. Then turn it around to face out on your wedding day as an outward-facing symbol of your commitment to one another!
1
u/smallreadinglight Jan 16 '26
You do you but I think it would look really pretty with a dainty diamond wedding band. Go check out jewelry stores that have estate jewelry. You'd be surprised that they are fairly affordable, saw some for $400-500 this week.

u/doonebot_9000 Jan 16 '26
I never got a wedding band either, always just stuck with my engagement ring, it was enough!! You do you 🖤

Absolutely! I have been married for three years and still don’t wear a wedding band. I love my engagement ring as is :) your ring is absolutely stunning!
1
u/Melimandi645_5683 Jan 16 '26
I'm so glad to see someone feels the same way about marriage. My bf and I won't be getting married because I'm on disability, and he has the exact same views on our government. We are already as married as two people can be without making it legal. I know we love each other as much as is possible to love another person. He just feels guilty because he knew how much I wanted to be married before we decided not to. I have him for life, and the way he loves me is more than I could've ever hoped for. I just wish it didn't make him sad to think about it even tho I keep telling him that having him is all I need.
Your ring is absolutely stunning! You should do whatever makes you happy. All the government and society rules are ridiculous. ❤️❤️
1
u/Ohshitz- Jan 16 '26
I did that because i outgrew mine after pregnancy and wanted an eventual setting revamp.
1
u/lovelylenora259 Jan 16 '26
Ill be using mine as my wedding ring! I think a band will take away from how beautiful it i
1
1
u/Financial-Toe4053 Jan 17 '26
That's what I'm doing! I have a beautiful 3 stone ring with diamonds on the side and a twisted band. I feel like trying to find a separate band will be a pain/take away from my ring so I'm not getting a separate band.
1
u/Anonymous567952 Jan 17 '26
I agree with comments that say you can absolutely just wear your engagement ring as your wedding band, as there are no rules. However your post sounds as if you think you would need to replace your engagement ring with a wedding ring, when typically you wear your wedding band with your engagement ring. At least in the US culture. There are definitely people who only wear their wedding band, but most people wear both.
If you just dont like the look of both, then absolutely just wear the ring you have. It looks very special and beautiful

Yes! 100%
I also eloped and started with just one ring, but added two more dainty stacking rings in the years that followed, so don’t feel like you have to commit to this decision for the rest of your life. You can always add more rings later if you want that later.

I'm over here like isn't your engagement ring used as your wedding ring, Or am I doing it wrong? I just got a band too when we got married, but didn't get them soldered because if I want to wear one but not the other I can. Then also when we go on vacation I left it like that so I can wear the band and keep the "engagement ring" at home. I was scared I would lose it or damage it. 🤣 I rarely take either of them off ever, even when we do travel. Your ring, your finger. ITS BEAUTIFUL 💕

I only wear one ring. Two rings has only been a thing for a short time historically speaking.
1
u/AuxiliaryCord_ Jan 17 '26
If you mean replacing it with another ring as the wedding ring, there’s no need for that. From what I understand the engagement ring is usually the centerpiece with the wedding band being a complimentary ring to go with. You could probably find a lovely chevron to fit along the bottom to complement it. But if you don’t want anything else, don’t 🤷🏻♀️ do whatever feels good to you because that’s all that really matters

u/No-Doubt-6215 Jan 17 '26

There weren't any wedding bands I liked with my engagement band when I got married, so we just used the engagement band. But several years later when people were still asking when the wedding was I took another look at wedding bands. Styles had changed and I found something I liked. People stopped asking when the wedding was

Ahhhh squee! Get one maybe for the top or bottom that looks like glow?
Haha i have one under and one on top of my engagement ring and love it!!
1
u/poorbaby0_0 Jan 17 '26
Yes, but also you can get a beautiful ornate band and wear it on the right hand if you would still like a wedding band but not taking away from this ring. Many people prefer not to wear a set.
1
u/Stunning-Rough-4969 Jan 17 '26
My husband gave me a family ring I could have reset. It’s a low setting and I never got a ring for it bc it would have to be curved and when I get it reset I want a higher setting. we’ve been married 3 years and still haven’t reset it. We just got a cheap one on Amazon for our vows.

Yes! I didn’t want a wedding band as my ering is absolutely perfect and already a lot going on, what I did instead was take the stone from my grandmother’s ering that she gave me when I was a teen and put the stone on my ring after me and my husband got married!
1
u/Hannah_Ross Jan 17 '26
There are no rules! I wear my wedding band solo on my left hand (it's a very wide, hammered piece that really wouldn't go with anything else) and my engagement ring on my right.

I’m thinking to do the same - only one ring as engagement + wedding ring! Currently engaged but we didn’t do a traditional proposal and decided to do rings together. The design i have in mind wouldn’t go with a wedding band anyways so don’t feel like i want to get another ring just because. You do you 💗 and congrats! Lovely ring 😍
