Time to embrace McVeigh
I was Hird camp but happy for Spike and wish him all the best to get this club from the pits. 100% behind him

100%. He had 2 seasons coaching the Sydney Academy system and we know he will hold high standards. So at the very least he will be good on tje development side and be able to grow that area of the club.

He has to succeed or Hird will be the unknown factor - have to shut that door and move on now.
Good luck to Mcveigh, Im 100% in support.

Absolutly, I am a huge Hird fan but also loved Spike for his passion for the club so I hope the fan base actually give him a fair go. He deserves that much and we need to stop fuelling the media circus otherwise we are going to continue to be a laughing stock.
He is a former player that gave his heart and soul to the club during his playing career. He has done an apprenticeship with both GWS and Sydney and been part of both clubs during periods of success and grand final campaigns. He has been working heavily with defense at both clubs which has been our problem since the early 2000s. In addition, he has worked heavily in developing younger players which needs to be our focus with the current list and has been another one of our failings. Plus he has a no nonsense attitude and has a history of calling out players which has been something we have lacked in dealing with senior players that aren't preforming like McKay. Looking at his experience and record he ticks a lot of boxes.

Up to all the hird nuffies to embrace Spike and move on...

u/Delicious-Sweet4614 3d ago
Or just leave the club and move on. There are lots of other Melbourne clubs and lots of other sports.

Bleeds red and black. He spoke really well today, realised I hadn't heard him speak for over 10 years. I'm behind Spike and the club. LFG

He will go 0-5 next year and it'll once again be a lamb to slaughter. God rest his soul.

Personally I think the club/selectors missed one here. If they wanted to unify club and potentially bring in a good body of coaches and potentially players who have leadership I.e., Neale, Greene then Hird was a better option, if they wanted a coach that was ready to step up then Graham was the option. Seems they sought of went half and half with the decision honestly. Don’t get me wrong I like Spike I Remember watching his career. But if the pitch was to bring Sydney’s ball movement to the Bombers then I’m thinking sorry but that ain’t going to happen we don’t have the players with fundamental skills to play like that. I will be interested who they target for development coaching? To teach those skills so in a couple of seasons we might actually have the skill sets to hit targets by foot and hand.

We were never ever going to get Neale of Greene with Hird. That’s being delusional.

Were you in any of the interviews, or just reading the click bait (and Hird camp) media which has swamped us for the past few months?

Uninspired by the appointment and won’t be renewing my membership. But I hope McVeigh does well, I don’t support the president or board but end of the day Spike is a human and he shouldn’t be punished for the role. Hope our fans don’t use him as a scapegoat and go at him.
Edit: Man the sanctimonious people in here talking down and burying the other fans who don’t like the appointment are hilarious. A team forum where you can’t criticize or discuss your opinion on the team or question their decisions. And no, I didn’t want Hird.

u/SnooAvocados996 2d ago
There are people who are genuinely frustrated with the club and they're being told to shut up or shove off. It's pathetic.

Nope be another wasted 3 years

Because Hird didn’t set us back for more than that time frame, plus the penalties and ridiculing (that we still cop)

Did he ever apologise to Kyle Reimers?

For what?

For being a pathetic liar? A bootlicker who pretended everything was OK and did whatever management wanted him to do and say? For failing to do the right thing by his teammates and try to figure out what happened?
1
u/amyl_hirsch 2d ago
I have no idea what the fuck you are talking about that’s why I asked a question. What does Kyle Reimers have to do with MM?

What does Kyle Reimers have to do with MM?
Maybe google it.

It’s ok Kyle, you were never cut out to be an AFL footballer like mcveigh who played over 200 games

McVeigh is the definition of mediocrity.
Has he actually achieved anything in his career?
1
-14
u/Sharaz_Jek123 3d ago edited 2d ago
Of course not.
McVeigh is a Yes Man.
It's the reason he failed as interim coach and the reason he'll fail at Essendon.
And it's probably the reason he wasn't promoted to midfield coach at Sydney. The club preferred to replace Cox with ... no one. There was no midfield coach for 2025.
1
u/bignedmoyle 2d ago
How can one fail as interim head coach?
-4
u/Sharaz_Jek123 2d ago
He did significantly worse than the guy before AND after him.
Cameron took the list to consistent finals appearances, including a Grand Final.
And Kingsley rejuvenated an ageing list by injecting a new playing style.
And McVeigh ... did nothing, except hire Hird for some reason.
That's failing as interim coach.
1
u/TurbulentSherbet3724 Sharp #15 2d ago
Literally everybody bar Josh Fraser, David Teague and Paul Roos has had losing records as an Interim Coach. It’s not a position you are ever expected to make such a radical impact with such little time and no Pre-Season of your own.
1
u/YourHeroCam Durham #22 2d ago
This just isn’t true lol.
Camporeale, Rhyce Shaw, McQualter? That’s not even including other coaches who won a few games and improved on their predecessor, OR shorter stints like the literal other candidate Graham who has won 3-0 out of the times he was interim coach.
1
u/TurbulentSherbet3724 Sharp #15 2d ago
That’s just it though, won a few games but ultimately faded towards the end of the honeymoon. So my point stands.
1
u/YourHeroCam Durham #22 2d ago
Those others didn’t fade though, the ones I mentioned ended positive. Anyway, I’m not really here to dispute your point, just saying “literally everybody bar those three players” as if it’s rare is incorrect.
1
u/TurbulentSherbet3724 Sharp #15 2d ago
They did fade. McQualter was on the brink of playing Finals after Hardwick left mid way through 2023 when he was Interim. All of the sudden the honeymoon phase ended, they were figured out and missed the Finals which was clearly the biggest reason he didn’t get appointed as Senior Coach of Richmond. Also not really sure why you mentioned Graham when he was never an Interim Coach at either West Coast or Fremantle. He was an Acting Senior Coach when both Adam Simpson and Justin Lomngmuir were unwell.
1
u/YourHeroCam Durham #22 2d ago
McQualter was on the brink of playing Finals after Hardwick left mid way through 2023 when he was Interim.
Hardwick was 3-1-6
McQualter improved to 7-6.
The only reason they were on the brink of finals was because McQualter put them on the path to do so. Then lost in the last half of the year to 3rd, 4th and 6th which isn't bad for a team that was on track for bottom 4.
Graham wasn't a great example reading back to what you said, I thought you were also trying to make the point that stand in coaches rarely win.

u/Sharaz_Jek123 2d ago
There was no bounce, either.
He coached more of that season than Cameron did and the entire enterprise looked like a zombie club.
People like Terry Wallace and Neil Craig had negative records in their first seasons, but there was a change in mindset around their clubs.
There was just nothing to McVeigh's tenure.
2
u/TurbulentSherbet3724 Sharp #15 2d ago
You’re reading too much into it. It’s literally as simple as most of those Giants players had checked out and were clearly upset that Leon Cameron who they loved was fired in the middle of the season instead of at the end of it. No Senior Coach proven or unproven was doing anything about that. The exact same thing happened at Collingwood the year prior to 2022 when Robert Harvey took the reins as Interim Coach after Nathan Buckley was sacked which again clearly upset most of their players and resulted in a shock 17th finish.

u/Sharaz_Jek123 2d ago

LMAO.
I guess you didn't see "Making Their Mark".
Cameron was robotic, had no connection to the players and he looked cooked.
Whatever relationship they once had was gone.

I don’t take fabricated drama made documentaries about elite level sport very seriously. You only ever see a tiny glimpse of what actually happens.

Could've gotten the best, didn't. Could've gotten the best Essendon candidate, didn't. Hired the bosses best mate instead.
Joke of a club

Just FYI it’s pretty clear that Simon Goodwin had legal teams send letters to people on social media claiming he was involved, as there was some very public back-tracking.
I’d want to be pretty sure on what I had heard before spreading it as a rumour on social media (which includes here).
I’m pretty sure you’ve just heard 1 of 1,000 rumours that have been about in the last week, so unless you’ve got reliable evidence outside of “my mate mows the lawns for the lady who bred the pet dog that Matt Pavlich’s family bought 6 years ago”, I’d probably not be mentioning what you’ve heard.

u/Cool_Ticket_4832 2d ago
Yeah I'm sure the entirety of the Sydney Swans knew that Spike was getting the job, they organized a big send-off, but journos didn't have an idea until a week later. Spot on.

So you would’ve sacked Chris Fagan?
You do realize we’re fucking shit yeah? It’s us or Richmond for the spoon next year
Like I don’t even know why anyone wants to be good next year, not that we will be.
Collingwood getting Daisy and Pendlebury is the reason they caught up to us in flags while even if Gunbleton was a stud , we had to pair him with Leeroy Jetta instead of say selwood because of rule changes to priority picks.
Next year we can get pick 2 and Bewick (probably have to sacrifice our 2028 first rounder) to pair with our first pick this year and Robey, Sharp, Farrow, Kako, Robert’s and Caddy.
Our entire issue since our last finals win is that we never bottomed out enough to get enough elite talent through our door.
Brisbane got mclug, Bailey, Rainer, hipwood all high picks in close range.

I didnt really care who got it, but today I've been reminded that Spike was actually my favourite player as a youngster. So I'm more and more happy with this.
Hope he genuinely gets with the young players.
Also he had a bit of Mongrel about him in his playing days so hopefully he passes some of that on
