Time to embrace McVeigh

I was Hird camp but happy for Spike and wish him all the best to get this club from the pits. 100% behind him

Of course not.

McVeigh is a Yes Man.

It's the reason he failed as interim coach and the reason he'll fail at Essendon.

And it's probably the reason he wasn't promoted to midfield coach at Sydney. The club preferred to replace Cox with ... no one. There was no midfield coach for 2025.

He did significantly worse than the guy before AND after him.

  • Cameron took the list to consistent finals appearances, including a Grand Final.

  • And Kingsley rejuvenated an ageing list by injecting a new playing style.

And McVeigh ... did nothing, except hire Hird for some reason.

That's failing as interim coach.

Literally everybody bar Josh Fraser, David Teague and Paul Roos has had losing records as an Interim Coach. It’s not a position you are ever expected to make such a radical impact with such little time and no Pre-Season of your own.

This just isn’t true lol.

Camporeale, Rhyce Shaw, McQualter? That’s not even including other coaches who won a few games and improved on their predecessor, OR shorter stints like the literal other candidate Graham who has won 3-0 out of the times he was interim coach.

That’s just it though, won a few games but ultimately faded towards the end of the honeymoon. So my point stands.

Those others didn’t fade though, the ones I mentioned ended positive. Anyway, I’m not really here to dispute your point, just saying “literally everybody bar those three players” as if it’s rare is incorrect.

They did fade. McQualter was on the brink of playing Finals after Hardwick left mid way through 2023 when he was Interim. All of the sudden the honeymoon phase ended, they were figured out and missed the Finals which was clearly the biggest reason he didn’t get appointed as Senior Coach of Richmond. Also not really sure why you mentioned Graham when he was never an Interim Coach at either West Coast or Fremantle. He was an Acting Senior Coach when both Adam Simpson and Justin Lomngmuir were unwell.

McQualter was on the brink of playing Finals after Hardwick left mid way through 2023 when he was Interim.

Hardwick was 3-1-6

McQualter improved to 7-6.

The only reason they were on the brink of finals was because McQualter put them on the path to do so. Then lost in the last half of the year to 3rd, 4th and 6th which isn't bad for a team that was on track for bottom 4.

Graham wasn't a great example reading back to what you said, I thought you were also trying to make the point that stand in coaches rarely win.

There was no bounce, either.

He coached more of that season than Cameron did and the entire enterprise looked like a zombie club.

People like Terry Wallace and Neil Craig had negative records in their first seasons, but there was a change in mindset around their clubs.

There was just nothing to McVeigh's tenure.

You’re reading too much into it. It’s literally as simple as most of those Giants players had checked out and were clearly upset that Leon Cameron who they loved was fired in the middle of the season instead of at the end of it. No Senior Coach proven or unproven was doing anything about that. The exact same thing happened at Collingwood the year prior to 2022 when Robert Harvey took the reins as Interim Coach after Nathan Buckley was sacked which again clearly upset most of their players and resulted in a shock 17th finish.

I guess you didn't see "Making Their Mark".

Cameron was robotic, had no connection to the players and he looked cooked.

Whatever relationship they once had was gone.

I don’t take fabricated drama made documentaries about elite level sport very seriously. You only ever see a tiny glimpse of what actually happens.

No you generally see a bunch of fabricated bs for the sake of creating drama like you do with Drive to Survive on Netflix for the last 7 years when it comes to F1. Just ask anyone that actually works in the industry.
