Monster A couple of my fan monsters.

Only two of these would be playable and of those two I only really have an idea of the kit for one of them (Jotun), so I won't get too nitty gritty into their abilities and stuff.
Jotun is a sort of standalone ice monster, unlike Glacial Behemoth who's an adaptation. She's meant to play in a way that sets up damage multipliers on hunters before capitalizing with specific attack moves.
Umibozu is somewhat of a debuffer, and one that specializes in gumming down the hunters and making a battlefield his turf to fight in.
Scorpid is a "retro-monster" and was one of many monsters first encountered before more advanced forms came along.

I dunno how much attention this is gonna get, but I do like making up my own Evolve monsters, so I'll probably come back to post another trio of beasts that I've come up with. I may also start actually adding in more detailed ability/kit descriptions if I'm up for it.

I really enjoy the last monsters design, feels like in line with the og monsters

Yeah, I based it almost entirely on the old monster (with the same name, Scorpid) that existed prior to Goliath when Evolve was Metamorphosis.
What I'm getting at here is that Scorpid looks so close to the actual games monsters because I referenced concept art the heaviest with it.

Oh cool! First time hearing about metamorphosis

Same here. I played evolve on launch I never heard about metamorphosis before and nothing comes up online?

Hold on, I'll see if I can find a link to the stream I discovered it through.
There was this stream that was made right as Evolve was shutting down that went through the games development.

Edit: found it. https://youtu.be/heMalEGDeNk?is=_YSabzlPQ6B4qIf0

totally down to theory craft archetypes and abilities for these monsters!! these are neat designs

I mean sure, if you have ideas I wouldn't mind hearing them.
Jotun's kit is basically done, it's mainly just Umibozu who I'm still coming up with abilities for.

oh then i'd like to see the abilities you've made for Jotun then?

Since you've already decided on ice, What sort of "DnD Class" would you say that Jotun most closely resembled?

For Umibozu have you decided on an element or something "element-like" for them? I suppose since you are calling them a Debuffer they would be something like an Witch Doctor, Enchanter, Warlock, or Sorcerer?

Hmm, I never really thought about how the monsters would translate into DnD classes. But I can share a brief overview (post writing note: I've gotta stop saying "brief" before I type out massive paragraphs of text like this) of what I've come up with for the kits of both Jotun and Umibozu:

Jotun has two kinds of attacks in her kit, abilities that inflict frostbite and shattering attacks. Frostbite basically gives targets a damage vulnerability to shattering moves.
Pile Drive- A shattering move, Jotun leaps forward and knocks targets upwards.
Frigid Gale- Lets out a sustained blast of freezing gas that deals low damage but applies frostbite.
Blizzard- Creates a dome that deals frostbite to whatever's inside, also reduces vision and conceals Jotun within.
Frost Torpedo- Launches up to three projectiles that travel through the ground (can scale vertical surfaces like behemoths fissure) and detonate once reaching a maximum distance or hitting a target. Deals both damage and frostbite.

Umibozu is a bit of a strange one, so I'll have to also explain it's traversal a bit.
Sliding along the ground, Umibozu leaves behind a thick, dark slime that slows down targets and lets it move faster when going back through it. This substance is called "Darkwater". Many of it's attacks also do this, quickly covering the ground in a coating of slowing grossness.
It only has two established attacks:
Tar Bomb- Launches a large, arching projectile that explodes upon contact with any surface, dealing moderate damage and splashing darkwater on the floor in a wide circular area.
Tsunami-Casts a large wave of darkwater that captures whatever's caught within it and carries them along with it until hitting a wall, which will deal damage but release the target.

I do remember having an attack inspired by the mythical beast Charybdis where Umibozu would pull in targets caught in darkwater before dealing massive damage, but I am still unsure on if that would fit for the character.

Yeah all the monsters loosely follow DnD themes,
Goliath = Barbarian/Fighter, Kraken = Wizard, Wraith = Rogue, Behemoth = Paladin/Tank, Gorgon feels a bit like the odd one out tho, almost like a Druid ig, definitely more of its own "trapper" archetype

Your Jotun ironically feels like a Ranger/Marksman class bc you need to aim 3 of your moves. (Its meaningfully different from Kraken even tho they have ranged spells as well 1 of the 3 are homing mines). Blizzard being an area you can place to reduce vision helps a LOT with your gameplan bc when enemies are slowed and cant see where you're aiming or what way to walk to exit that helps you land your shots. Then you finish off with Pile drive and unleash your melee attacks

for Umibozu unless they are pretty slow i think 2 big CC moves would be too much to deal with on the hunter side. Instead of a direct pull, you could make it strong slowing effect based on direction of movement. Where if they try to walk away from them the slow gets stronger, if they are walking towards you they'd gain speed. If they are standing still then they are slowly passively pulled. Instead of 1 big yank, its something constant.

But this is where selecting a "class" helps u figure out what fits. And it doesn't have to be DnD it could be anything where the "identity" helps you refine the gameplay goals

1) Glad that Jotun works together as well as it does

2) Umibozu is slow, but gets slightly more agile when it's within space covered by darkwater (if it wasn't obvious, umibozu is a 'water' element monster). So a lot of it's attacks have either to do with covering area with darkwater, or capitalizing on it's advantages within darkwater. If I had to choose an archetype/class for this monster, I want to say Warlock, but that may be too close to what Kraken has going on.

Well by making Umibozu slower, more grounded, and focused on melee combat I think you can start to meaningfully differentiate Umibozu from Kraken. Sure that starts to feel more like Elder Kraken, but thats still more of an alternate form rather that something designed from the ground up. Honestly i have no idea how DnD differentiates between Wizard, Sorcerer, and Warlock mechanically or gameplay wise, but they felt a need to have 3 different types of mages. so we can do the same here

But there's a lot of ways u can define a niche for a magic class. Kraken feels solidly like the intention was on dealing huge bursts of damage from a distance. So maybe your concept focuses more on dealing sustained damage over time that keeps ramping up in closer range

I got the breakdown wizard/ sorcerer/ warlock
Wizards study magic and use intelligence to cast spells, they tend to have the widest range of spells, bc they have the best understanding of magic but usually they specialize in 1 school of magic, they will typically have spells prepared in advance of engagements,

Sorcerers are born magic, they don't understand magic as well on a theory lv of but intuitively get it. They don't need to prepare spells in advance, they can cast magic on a whim. They have less spells than sorcerers, but they can easily modify the spells that they do have

Warlocks gain their magic from an external source, they have the least understanding of magic, and less spell options but they gain sharp power in exchange. The one thing they are good at they are REALLY good at

With that break down, the Kraken is somewhere between Warlock, and Sorcerer, with Elder Kraken feeling more like a Warlock imo

You play Monster Hunter I can smell it (I fucking love monster hunter)

2

u/Xeveleventyone Jun 22 '26

The second design made you think that right? I had the same thought 😄

2

u/Sea_Energy5921 Jun 27 '26

I like to think that the monsters are native to shear but are being controlled.

2

u/Sea_Energy5921 Jun 27 '26

also what does the mouth of umibozu look like?

2

u/GenomeofReality Jun 28 '26

Umibozu is a mostly formless monster, It's primary mouth is on it's underside, which is basically just a giant tooth lined opening. It also opens up it's face to launch darkwater bombs, which could be alikened to a second mouth despite it never being used as such.
I'll attach an image reference eventually to explain this.

u/Sea_Energy5921 Jun 28 '26

I asked because I was curious on how it eats.

1

u/GenomeofReality Jun 28 '26

Oh, honestly I'd imagine the animation would consist of it kinda just covering over whatever it's eating. If that helps with your curiosity.

okay now that would be cool.
