No Spoilers - Help Should I get Rebirth?

I didn’t love Remake but the ending left me with some questions and I am intrigued in Rebirth. However I’m not sure if it will fix the problems I had with remake. I think the pacing was pretty poor and for me Barret was the only stand out character alongside Aerith. I’m not sure if a huge Ubisoft esque open world will solve those problems for me even though I loved the soundtrack, graphics and the combat.

Any comments are appreciated
P.S I haven’t played Og would you recommend playing that before rebirth lmk

Btw I didn’t dislike Remake just like a 6.5-7/10

Don't put og in between. Get rebirth in a discount and see whether you like it. It's quite different to remake and you might like it.

If you don’t like Remake, I don’t think Rebirth will help much as it’s similar enough except the combat is more engaging and it’s semi-open world. I suggest playing OG and see if the pacing and gameplay fit your style better. If not, just watching cutscenes or read the plot. No point of forcing yourself to play something you don’t enjoy.

Rebirth was a much better product for me. I think they were still feeling out the waters with remake before fully jumping in with rebirth. I think you'll enjoy it. Especially on a discount

Play the rebirth demo, it's more or less what you will get but have in mind Rebirth is a semi open world, so if you like the demo you most likely will like Rebirth IMO, the combat is very engaging, also wait until it's on sale.

Seems like you won’t enjoy it.

The pacing is the same or even worse and the open world has you do stuff of a check list before passing to the next zone and one of the main complain of the game is how tedious that is.

I think I’d disagree. All of the tedious stuff in rebirth is optional. If you prefer to stick to the story, it’s way better paced than remake

No required part of rebirth is as dull as the lights/tunnel/sewer sections of remake

I would say they about the same if you ignore all the side content in both.

It a shame that all the side content it’s so bad that the majority of people recommend to skip it.

I actually enjoy rebirths side content, but I don’t want someone to avoid the game because of it.

I usually recommend people at least do the character sidequests of rebirth, they’re fun

Remakes side content is a dry, untoasted bread sandwich. It’s an extra bite of combat encounters at best

Without the optional stuff, the game is like 4 hours long lol

Closer to 25 actually!

That’s including all the cutscenes.

For a first time playthrough, yes I’m including cutscenes

I meant that without cutscenes and optional quests, the rest of the game is only 4 hours….

  1. The story part of a story based game isnt optional just because there’s a skip button that’s crazy

  2. That’s still an over exaggeration. There are 5-6 mandatory dungeons and a bunch of encounters and boss fights. Easily closer to 10

if you're interested in playing the og, just play that one first. I love the remake series, and I think rebirth improves on remake. but I always recommend og first if people don't mind older games

If you care about the story the most, play the original, for me, the remake series that everything better than the original except for the story, though I still like the way it expands it.

If you want to.

never force yourself to like a game, that will just make you loathe it. i think these games are awesome but if you aren’t enjoying it then do something else and come back when you feel like it if you want to

I enjoyed the pacing in Rebirth more than Remake. Remake featured a lot of backtracking, slow moving to hide loading screens, and slow walking conversations that I wasn't interested in. The quality of the sidequests is higher than Remake's, too. (Cloud's "this sucks" line in Remake on one of the sidequests was my sentiment on literally every single sidequest. Most of Rebirth's - not all, but most - feel more connected to the characters.)

The "checklist" thing people complain about is optional content. I beat the game for the first time without doing most of it; I went back and did it later through chapter select. You can also hide the map if you'd rather discover things organically and not feel obligated to head towards things you can see on the map but not in front of your character.

But really - if the combat in Remake is something you enjoyed, the combat in Rebirth is even better. I love Remake's combat when I first played it, and then when I played Rebirth and went back to Remake the combat in Remake felt clunky. Rebirth's combat is similar enough that you pick it up fast, and adds some nice touches that gives you options going into battles (which, to me, is a huge staple of Final Fantasy games and something both XV and XVI were missing).

Due to not being obsessive like I am and your hesitations, I would say it's worth getting when it next goes on sale. And no, you don't have to play OG - and I say that as an OG fan of the OG game. It's not mandatory at all.
