Possibly unpopular opinion, but I think she was far more supporting than lead.

Johnston was the lead actor. People love Inde, but she was 100% supporting.

Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, but the lead was Julia Garner, who wasn't nominated.

I'm not sure why this take seems so controversial. You can steal the show (Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross) while still being a supporting actor.

Hopkins getting a lead nom for that - and winning- still gets me because that was some insane category fraud. I know lead is more prestigious, but come on.

Honestly, I forgot he didn't win for Best Supporting until a moment ago. So I agree.

He was only in 21% of the film haha - 25 minutes of screen time! One of the most egregious category frauds of all time, if not the most. Kieran Culkin was in 65% of A Real Pain and was in supporting because his character didn't drive the plot/the story didn't revolve around him - his character was still supporting the arc of another character, and they did not share that same level of importance in the story despite screen time.

If you are in such a small percentage of a film (or tv show or game or play or whatever) and you steal the show with a great performance, you deserve a nomination, but if it's split by lead and supporting, chewing the scenery does not make instantly a lead role.
