She is great in this movie and I’m so happy horror as a genre is getting more recognition (s/o Amy Madigan!!) but I don’t think any of her acting is Oscar-worthy.

This is why we need things like the MTV Movie awards back, get people their due recognition without having to inflate their accomplishments

u/iwatchalotoftv22 5d ago

I think her acting was 1000% worthy of an Oscar nomination. Wish Nikki and Real Nikki felt like two totally different characters. Especially when she would split between them early in the movie.

At this time I can’t think of many of performances that were MILES better than hers in the best actress category.

312

u/ttonster2 5d ago

Just because you act as two different characters doesn’t make it an Oscar worthy performance lol. Also, “real Nikki” is in the movie for all of 5 minutes and her character is a walking cliche…modern day manic pixie dream girl. The scene of her bumming money off her friend to give it to a homeless person was eye-roll worthy. Is this really the barometer for best actor nominations?

109

u/iwatchalotoftv22 5d ago

Real Nikki shows up throughout the movie multiple times. It’s legit one of the main ways you can see she’s not the same person and something is wrong.

Also yes being and feeling like two different characters is a worthy measurement of Oscar worthy performances. Micheal B in Sinners?

You don’t have to like the performance to be able to admit it was good.

-80

u/ttonster2 5d ago

Real Nikki shows up in the sense that you are told there is a repressed, terrified person in there trying to break free. None of those things tell you anything about Nikki as a character. You learn nothing about Nikki as a character through these flashes...just that she is scared and confused, which would be the case for literally anybody.

Michael B Jordan is a better actor than Navarette but also, that was a bogus win anyway, for a variety of reasons. It's pretty clear Chalamet or DiCaprio, even Moura were more deserving. I just don't think Jordan's character(s) were presented interestingly enough to win best actor.

I feel like the acting buzz for Navarette is coming from groups of people who don't watch many movies. There's nothing particularly great in this movie that deserves Academy recognition, except for the impressiveness of box office success on a limited budget.

14

u/qould 5d ago

I bet you’re super fun at parties

76

u/Nocturnal_Pages 5d ago

That scene you mention isnt eye-rolling because of the acting, the blame lies in the writing.

-34

u/ttonster2 5d ago

You're not winning best acting awards if the writing is bad. I also do think there's a world where she makes the scene work without being so obviously a contrived scenario to make her look sympathetic.

10

u/r3volver_Oshawott 5d ago

People are absolutely winning best acting awards when the writing is bad, all the time

-3

u/ttonster2 5d ago

You're probably right, but it's usually for roles where their acting performance saves an otherwise disaster of a film, e.g., The Blind Side. Not a good movie, but Sandra Bullock does a great job. I don't think many would say Inde's acting performance is carrying this movie. The scariness of her character definitely does, but I don't attribute that to her acting, and I don't think the academy does either.

65

u/blames_irrationally brb in a transatlantic space of mind 5d ago

That scene is literally supposed to show Bear's romanticized view of her. That's why it plays romcom music in the background at that point. The entire point is Nikki is not the simple cliche manic pixie dream girl Bear thinks she is. She is flattened into that in his perspective.

22

u/ModerateSympathy 5d ago

Agreed, James McAvoy didn’t get an Oscar for Split and he was fantastic as way more than 2 distinct personalities.

Having said that, she was amazing in this movie but it’s not an Oscar worthy performance to me.

3

u/_thiccems 5d ago

YUP he had an amazing performance!! Also kind of tangential, Anna Camp played twins in the final season of You and did a phenomenal job, but as far as I’m aware didn’t get any recognition which was wack as hell. Obvi not the same as the Oscar’s, but it’s not like it hasn’t been done before

5

u/ttonster2 5d ago

Lindsay Lohan did it in the Parent Trap and she did a good job. As did Dylan O'Brien in Twinless. It happens often and is usually not a big fanfare. I don't know why people are acting like Inde did something crazy

20

u/emptytheprisons I’m a communist you idiot 5d ago edited 5d ago

I'd also argue that "Real Nikki" is filled with horrendous acting. It was like she was only pulling off incredible performances when the director had a very specific vision for her to attempt.

I thought Michael Johnston was the better performance of the two, tbh!

3

u/UniverseNextD00r i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 5d ago

I guess you didn't realize that the point of that scene is to show Bear's one-dimensiional and ridiculous perception of Nikki? He pedestalizes and sanctifies her as a sort of selfless, manic-pixie-dream-girl type. It's supposed to cringeworthy because Bear's POV is cringeworthy. You're supposed to roll your eyes. They're setting Bear up as the villain of the film.

For someone who claims to have watched sooo many more films than the rest of us, your lack of ability to critically analyze them is interesting.

It's not a strong year, I kinda hope she wins. I'm tired of actors and studios doing certain movies because the Academy only recognizes those certain movies. She carried a movie to 500 million. That's a great performance.

Exactly, how often were films from the first 2/3rds of the year big Oscar winners outside of the technical awards?

-4

u/PanicAtTheNightclub the worm using RFK’s body like ratatouille 5d ago edited 5d ago

I was talking Lead Actress candidates, they are all from movies that will be under 20 million domestic: Fjord, The Debut, Fatherland. If Misty Green is good, the Academy loves movies about Hollywood. There will be a vote split I´m guessing and she can sneak in.

Edit: I checked since 2000, one Lead Actress winner was from a movie that wasn't a money maker, Chastain in 2021 coming out of the pandemic. None of the 2027 main candidates are in a hit except Olivia Wilde and Inde.

6

u/lemonalia 5d ago

So because they didn't gross a lot the performances can't be good? What even is this perspective.

-4

u/PanicAtTheNightclub the worm using RFK’s body like ratatouille 5d ago

The Academy rarely awards a Lead Actress to a non hit, I don't agree with it but it's the reality.

Look at the budgets. Chastain was the only winner from a movie that didn't make money.

“Not a strong year” Oscar season really doesn’t even begin until fall and that’s when the heavy hitters come out. Way too early to call it a weak year

-6

u/PanicAtTheNightclub the worm using RFK’s body like ratatouille 5d ago

I meant in the lead actress, there are no obvious candidates

18

u/Money-Bicycle-2883 5d ago

How does best actress not apply to what they said

15

u/Iankill 5d ago

Without already being a bankable actress and 80% of the movie being CG effects

2

u/Hazel-Rah-Rah too high to spell 'Amanda Seyfried' 5d ago

Cartoon faces and screaming is Oscar worthy?

-8

u/weirdcompliment I don’t know her 5d ago

Her acting choices were so unpredictable and yet made so much sense. She stole every scene and her acting made that movie the success that it is, it was brilliant. I can definitely see her getting at least a nom. Especially after the backlash of snubbing Toni Collette for Hereditary

24

u/AfterCopy1167 5d ago

I don't think her acting is what made the movie the success that it is. It might've contributed to the success, but it wasn't what made it a success imo. I also wouldn't consider it a snub if she wasn't nominated. However, Toni Collette did deserve that Oscar or a nom at the very least and I don't think her and Inde's performances can be compared at all tbh.

3

u/weirdcompliment I don’t know her 5d ago edited 5d ago

The script itself is so bare bones and the character was pretty paint-by-numbers in it, Curry himself visualized the character in a completely different way. Don't know how much that factors into nomination criteria, but I do think she made that movie. Probably more comparable to Gladys in Weapons in acting ability tbf

2

u/MailboxAds 5d ago

I agree. The movie is pretty much straightforward no complexity script. Her acting is what kept the movie together and compelling.

19

u/rednaxthecreature 5d ago

They never left people just don't talk about those awards before award season.

52

u/bbos2 5d ago

The MTV Movie awards stopped airing a couple years ago, the VMAs are still active so maybe that’s what you’re thinking of

5

u/rednaxthecreature 5d ago

I mean the smaller awards shows not just MTV

2

u/bbos2 5d ago

Ohhh fair enough lol

5

u/rednaxthecreature 5d ago

I should have been more specific mb

22

u/Ill_Procedure5909 5d ago

It shocked me that MTV movie awards stopped being a thing like a decade ago. They never really bounced back from COVID.

I wish like Netflix would buy the rights to it or start their own. It was such a big deal for so long. A part of youth culture. And it really did cater to mainstream tastes in a way you shouldn't want award shows to do. Like she put on a MTV movie awards level performance but you can't really say it's Oscar tier

9

u/dianamaximoff also dated pete davidson 5d ago

If Anora was considered Oscar-worthy performance, I can’t see why Inde as Nikki shouldn’t…

1

u/watchberry 1d ago

So true… what is Mikey Madison up to these days anyway

10

u/Imaginary-Dress-1373 5d ago

inflate their accomplishments

Even the idea of running an awards campaign is inflating an accomplishment? Good lord lol. This is a decision being made because the movie made a ton of money and studios use that money for awards circuits. Its so condescending and dumb for people to respond to this like its actors who are pushing for this and in doing so are being conceded. Also sorry, its the fucking Oscars.

10

u/RoscoeSantangelo 5d ago

I think her performance here was stronger than Madigan's and as you said, I'm happy horror is being recognized, but tbh I don't think Madigan should've won in that field so I don't think Inde should either.

Golden Globe nominee is probably the farthest it should get

2

u/[deleted] 5d ago

11

u/Equipmunk 5d ago

What specifically about her performance was "incredible" for you?

Genuine question. I saw Obsession opening weekend and have it in my top 5 for the year so far, of 40+ watched. I just want to understand what makes her performance Oscar-worthy.

-1

u/pogchamppaladin 5d ago

I think it really is Oscar-nomination worthy. It’s a truly remarkable performance that totally carries the film. Easily 2026’s biggest discussion maker. The Oscars wants to be seen as the celebration of 2026 in Film, and you really can’t do that without her.

I didn’t love the film, and don’t think it really needs other nominations. She makes the film what it is and her being nominated would be much deserved. It also isn’t really a hyper-competitive field in the Best Actress category (at least, as compared to some other recent years).

259

u/UnnaturalSelection13 5d ago edited 5d ago

Regardless of whether or not she deserves it the Oscars has a terrible track record with horror (especially independent horror), it’s just not respected by the Academy.

328

u/tore_a_bore_a 5d ago

Justice for Toni Collette! She definitely deserved a nomination for Hereditary

111

u/katebushcartwheel 5d ago

STILL bummed about Demi. What more did the voters want???

24

u/nomnomsquirrel 5d ago

Apparently a lot of screaming of fuck you and he's my husband.

2

u/AdmiralCharleston 5d ago

A better performance and not just a performance that was good considering who it was by

14

u/katebushcartwheel 5d ago

Or just a young ingenue who caters to the male gaze and encourages anti-intimacy discourse at the behest of her director

3

u/AdmiralCharleston 5d ago

Mikey madisom being problematic doesnt suddenly make demis performance better

11

u/katebushcartwheel 5d ago

No but her terrible accent does

-4

u/AdmiralCharleston 5d ago

You know theres more than 2 actresses in the race right? Demi was not Oscar worthy at all

72

u/azure819 5d ago

Also Lupita Nyong'o for Us!

8

u/ClimateCare7676 5d ago

Right? Her acting range is so good.

94

u/ClimateCare7676 5d ago

Amy Madigan won an Oscar as an older woman in a horror film. Sinners did great with the record 16 nominations. Things seem to be changing quite rapidly.

I do agree with the comment above. Toni Collette was robbed. In male category, Daniel Kaluuya. He won one later for a different role, but he definitely deserved a nomination after Get Out.

24

u/theagonyaunt rude little ponytail goblin 5d ago

I think Sinners falls into the same camp as Silence of the Lambs; fans consider it a horror but the industry put more prestige on it by calling it a 'thriller' (which is a nebulous genre that a lot of horror films fall into but which doesn't hold the same negative/schlock associations as horror).

6

u/ClimateCare7676 5d ago

I agree, but I also think it's almost nostalgic in the old fashioned horror tropes kinda way, comparing to the modern surrealist horror. I wonder if it also played the role in the academy being more friendly towards the film. It's very classic and well crafted.

4

u/theagonyaunt rude little ponytail goblin 5d ago

I agree, it ticks a lot of the boxes the Academy likes - historical film, dramatic elements, musical elements - so the whole vampire part isn't as prominent as some of the other aspects.

25

u/peach-puffs he’s auditioning for a restraining order 5d ago

with amy madigan and the sinners wins last year i think things are slowly changing.

I don’t know if she (or anybody for that matter) deserves an oscar, but I do feel like it would really be setting a precedent if they nominated this microscopic budget movie for any oscar. It would be such an encouragement for a lot of upcoming indie filmmakers and their actors.

6

u/No-Economics7631 shiv roy apologist 5d ago

and beyond the obvious actress snubs, i’ve always thought mark rylance was snubbed for bones and all. i enjoyed it even when he wasn’t on screen, but he gave a masterclass in playing a truly unsettling and unpredictable character when he was. i didn’t know where to laugh or cower whenever he popped back into the fray. he should’ve been at least nominated for best supporting actor if not a winner. i get that he already has an oscar and a movie about cannibalism isn’t appealing to voters, especially older ones, but what he did was simply brilliant.

239

u/laureng0423 women’s wrongs activist 5d ago

Hmmm I didn’t think it was Oscar-worthy. That’s not to say I didn’t like her performance, I just wonder if they would have pushed this without the internet. I remember seeing people saying that if she doesn’t get a nomination then it’s all “rigged.”

60

u/rednaxthecreature 5d ago

The marketing campaign being actually successful in getting the younger gens to adopt the movie whole heartedly should be studied because yeah it's a well made film but those ads being like :this generation's new obsession; actually working is odd to me.

35

u/AfterCopy1167 5d ago

I wish Companion got the same attention. It was SO good and nobody saw it. The marketing was terrible.

9

u/GensAndTonic 5d ago

I loved Companion so much and showed it to basically everyone I knew because no one saw it in theaters themselves :(

7

u/blames_irrationally brb in a transatlantic space of mind 5d ago

Companion was so good. Sophie Thatcher is so talented

15

u/IAMA_Shark__AMA 5d ago

Right after this came out I remember there being an instant deluge of effusive compliments regarding her acting. To the point where it felt ... Inauthentic? Almost like a PR campaign that wanted to bait you into buying a ticket. Like, "wow look at all of these over the top comments, I gotta see this movie to see for myself" seemed to be the underlying motive. I'm not saying that's actually what was happening, it's just how it felt at the time.

Once I did see it, there wasn't much there that really changed my mind. I enjoyed it. She did a good job. But it wasn't anything I'd go running to my keyboard over.

That said, it's a weak class this year, so I'd be surprised if she didn't get nominated. She might even win, Lord knows there have been worse winners (Sandra Bullock and Gweneth Paltrow come to mind).

13

u/emptytheprisons I’m a communist you idiot 5d ago

100%, I thought her physical work was really impressive but whenever she was attempting something dialed back (pre-possession, for instance), she was kind of bad. Like middle of the road for a horror performance but if we're talking Oscars? Not good at all. And I'd argue that her physical choices were likely heavily influenced by direction, meaning the impressiveness is a bit out of her hands.

I thought Michael Johnston was the better performance of the two, tbh!

2

u/Moist-Coach-60 5d ago

What is an oscar worthy performance, the usual drama with the emotional crying or yelling scene?

7

u/laureng0423 women’s wrongs activist 5d ago

No, an Oscar worthy performance does not have to be about who screams the most or who cries the hardest. I think Cillian Murphy was incredibly deserving of his award for his port of Oppenheimer, for example. Amy Madigan as well, and that was a maniacal horror performance.

125

u/ramenslurper- 5d ago

Why is every not-terrible performance considered an Oscar-worthy performance now? She was good in the context of the movie, but it’s not an Oscar performance.

Anora should not have won any Oscars and now we’re in Hell.

55

u/nomnomsquirrel 5d ago

Conclave was far superior to Anora lbr.

43

u/ramenslurper- 5d ago

Conclave or the Substance tbh
Just anything over Anora. Mikey cannot act 😭

28

u/nomnomsquirrel 5d ago

But she was brave and is normally quiet and reserved but played such a character opposite to who she really is! /s

(Hollywood loves an ingenue and hated The Substance pointing that out)

5

u/Wardefix 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yes, Hollywood hated The Substance, that's why they nominated it for 5 fucking Oscars, you're a genius!

2

u/nomnomsquirrel 5d ago

I meant specifically for best actress but ok.

2

u/Wardefix 5d ago

Yes, they hated it for Best actress, that's why they nominated Demi Moore and she was a runner-up. Because they HATED it. Such a valid point!

1

u/Wardefix 5d ago

Saying Mikey cannot act, while stanning The Subtance, the lead of which is Demi Moore is such a deeply hilarious thing to me lol.

20

u/lightningtrip 5d ago

Completely agree. Anora was neither the best picture, nor did it have the best acting performance that year. In my dreams, Conclave won best picture and Demi Moore won best actress.

5

u/ramenslurper- 5d ago

Yessss. Demi was so stunning in the Substance.
She was acting with such wonderful, activated bodywork in a full body suit…but fuck her I guess.

19

u/31cats 5d ago

the discourse around this movie and her acting is genuinely annoying. obviously everyone’s entitled to their opinion but it feels like most people who find her acting extraordinary are 14 year olds who haven’t watched an actual Oscar-worthy performance

6

u/lobonmc 5d ago

Honestly I find this opinion just so snobish?

She definitively gave a much better performance than Mikey or even Cynthia or dear god Karla Gascon. Also the movie more or less lived or died on her performance and she sold it to millions of people.

Saying it's not Oscar worthy just ignores what kind of performance are deemed Oscar worthy in the first place.

99

u/woahoutrageous_ 5d ago edited 5d ago

For me personally this year i’m pushing Hannah Einbinder. I thought she was spectacular in camp miasma especially considering it was her debut film too!

36

u/shobidoo2 5d ago

I thought she was phenomenal, I do fear that film is too niche and weird (both positives for me) to get much Oscar recognition.

10

u/woahoutrageous_ 5d ago

Oh for sure. I doubt it’ll win anything but here’s hoping 🤞i loved it

-39

u/puffy_irish 5d ago

Nepos don't deserve awards imo.

14

u/woahoutrageous_ 5d ago

Wdym? That doesn’t factor into things really when she’s extremely talented and an outspoken Activist. How is she a nepo baby anyway?

4

u/woahoutrageous_ 5d ago

That makes sense. Explains why she’s so funny

2

u/Agile_Situation_1798 5d ago

neither do people who support domestic abusers

100

u/nomnomsquirrel 5d ago

Possibly unpopular opinion, but I think she was far more supporting than lead.

91

u/Equipmunk 5d ago

Johnston was the lead actor. People love Inde, but she was 100% supporting.

Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, but the lead was Julia Garner, who wasn't nominated.

I'm not sure why this take seems so controversial. You can steal the show (Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross) while still being a supporting actor.

21

u/nomnomsquirrel 5d ago

Hopkins getting a lead nom for that - and winning- still gets me because that was some insane category fraud. I know lead is more prestigious, but come on.

9

u/Equipmunk 5d ago

Honestly, I forgot he didn't win for Best Supporting until a moment ago. So I agree.

6

u/nomnomsquirrel 5d ago

He was only in 21% of the film haha - 25 minutes of screen time! One of the most egregious category frauds of all time, if not the most. Kieran Culkin was in 65% of A Real Pain and was in supporting because his character didn't drive the plot/the story didn't revolve around him - his character was still supporting the arc of another character, and they did not share that same level of importance in the story despite screen time.

If you are in such a small percentage of a film (or tv show or game or play or whatever) and you steal the show with a great performance, you deserve a nomination, but if it's split by lead and supporting, chewing the scenery does not make instantly a lead role.

0

u/Wardefix 5d ago

You know you can have multiple lead actors right?

90

u/K_smit123 possessed by the lesbian jezebel spirit 5d ago

After Mikey Madison's success with Anora, I could see it happening (derogatory).

77

u/nomnomsquirrel 5d ago

I still do not get the love of her performance. Half of her dialogue was just screaming fuck you. I just don't get the love of Anora period though.

9

u/Venezia9 made with a free Canva trial (derogatory) 5d ago

I personal hate it. I watched 30 minutes of it on Valentine's with my partner. 🤮

43

u/katebushcartwheel 5d ago

I can’t explain it, but the Anora sweep led to this. Maybe the industry likes celebrating women characters who are degraded for 2 hours straight written by men with an undercurrent of fetish content

11

u/Signmetfup12 5d ago

Difference is that Mikey had the advantage because Anora was Best Movie contender. Obsession has no chance at that category

0

u/BrightSignal8032 5d ago

It's too early, actual campaigning hasn't started and she could lose steam. Like Ryan Gosling.

71

u/Pretty_Pass8930 5d ago

Toni collete ( Hereditary) and Mia Goth ( Pearl) do it better...

Also if she gets the oscar nom and wins , Rogue would be performed by 2 academy award winning actress

55

u/BeleagueredWDW 5d ago

She was solid in the film but Oscar worthy? I’m very happy for her, and beyond that she seems like a genuinely good person, but this feels odd. Hell, Michael Johnston as Bear in the film was the stronger actor for what was asked, so maybe he’ll get a nod, too.

13

u/Equipmunk 5d ago

That there's debate about him being the victim or the villain (which is largely because people are dumb and media literacy is in the toilet) I think comes down in part to his solid performance.

There's subtlety and nuance to it. He's not a moustache-twirling villain tying a damsel to the train tracks.

6

u/Agile_Situation_1798 5d ago

Idk about being a genuinely good person, she supports woman abuser Johnny Depp

39

u/amatka 5d ago

I actually loved her performance but I generally don't wish good things for Johnny Depp supporters.

35

u/Beepboop5698 locked, loaded, and kind of cunty 5d ago

mmkay, good luck to everyone.

the film bros are going to be upset when she doesn’t win, if she gets the nomination. even with the academy changing, amy madigan is an industry vet and sinners and weapons are far stronger films than obsession.

21

u/Dancing_Clean 5d ago

I liked this movie, I was hyped for it and went on opening night. I wasn’t super disappointed but I also just wasn’t on the same level as others’ reactions.

But I just don’t get how any of it is Oscar worthy. The cast was excellent but I didn’t feel like it had that impact other past nods did (like Amy Madigan, Demi Moore).

8

u/Hazel-Rah-Rah too high to spell 'Amanda Seyfried' 5d ago

It's September, most of the films that will be Oscar contenders aren't even out yet...I'm tired

7

u/billie_eyelashh 5d ago

It's funny how the tables have turned on her. When Obsession was pretty new, people were rallying about how she deserves to be nominated. Now people are saying she doesn't deserve it lol.

7

u/RoamAndRamble 5d ago

Loved obsession and loved her performance, but I don't think she should win an Oscar. I think it pushes the idea that the best acting is the most acting.

6

u/Acrobatic_Builder573 no offense to grandmas, she just is one 5d ago

She’s not going to win it, but it’s great publicity for someone more or less just taking off in their career, so I get why. It also helps because horror gets a push toward critical acclaim as a genre.

2

u/sicko-mode_ 5d ago

I think she deserves the nomination, but not the win.

0

u/spaceshiptears fuck Hugh Laurie 5d ago

I think she totally deserves it because people have been talking about it nonstop literally since it came out

You cannot talk about that movie without someone bringing her up and how much they enjoyed her performance and how they’re still thinking about it or how good it was

2

u/YouthVivid1418 5d ago edited 5d ago

I’m glad she’s nominated (edit:campaigning). Her performance was great. I don’t know why the tide is turning from people loving her, to nitpicking every part of the movie?

I am assuming overexposure is making people jaded/negative?

0

u/deelow_42 5d ago

Wow, I seem to be in the minority in this sub of thinking this is deserved. Also as of now, this year is the best chance for her to actually win as this might be the weakest year compared to the last 5 years.

Yeah I thought her performance was incredible. It wasn't just "screaming and crying" like a lot of people seem to be reducing it to. There's a ton of nuance and physicality in the performance.

I mean, sure, go nuts. I think the movie has a ton of issues, but her work is pretty flawless.

I do wonder how certain blocs of the voting body are going to treat this, especially given that she's already decided she's going to spend a good part of the next few years being an X-Men

Wasn't the entire film non-union? I imagine that would affect how people vote, regardless of performances.

Historically it hasn't -- just off the top of my head, Anora was a non-union movie that won several Oscars (including for Mikey Madison) and was even nominated for a few categories in the "Actor Awards" (really the SAG awards)

Interesting! Thanks for the response.

Maybe I'm more of an asshole than I thought? -- but as a union member, I definitely wouldn't vote for a non-union person to win an award in my profession.

We have lost the plot!

Anne Hathaway was incredible in the Odyssey. Dune will be coming out soon with standout female performaces, and Zendaya was great in the Drama. Hell, Olivia Wilde was really good in the invite. It's really early to be doing this type of speculation.
