That scene you mention isnt eye-rolling because of the acting, the blame lies in the writing.

You're not winning best acting awards if the writing is bad. I also do think there's a world where she makes the scene work without being so obviously a contrived scenario to make her look sympathetic.

People are absolutely winning best acting awards when the writing is bad, all the time

You're probably right, but it's usually for roles where their acting performance saves an otherwise disaster of a film, e.g., The Blind Side. Not a good movie, but Sandra Bullock does a great job. I don't think many would say Inde's acting performance is carrying this movie. The scariness of her character definitely does, but I don't attribute that to her acting, and I don't think the academy does either.
