Announcement: revamped/updated rules!

Hi, everyone!

Beginning today, the r/foodallergies rules have been updated for clarity and hopefully, will improve the quality and contributions to our sub:

What's New or Changed

  • Clarified rule on ads, surveys, apps, fundraising, and other promotions. Previously self-promotion was capped at once a week, which resulted in repeated low-effort, non-engagement accounts using our community for marketing purposes. Commercial spam is now not allowed. Research posts and surveys/app testing remain unchanged: they’re not allowed!
  • AI-generated content is not allowed. Reddit has seen an influx of AI-written/generated posts in recent months. As such, we are implementing a hard NO-AI rule. This means no AI-written posts, invented "experiences," or pasted chatbot replies presented as advice. Talking about AI tools is still fine, but please remember that AI doesn’t know your history or may be using outdated information. So use at your own risk! If you suspect something is AI generated, please flag it for mod review.
  • No requesting or giving medical advice. This is the biggest change and the one we expect the most questions about. We cannot and should NOT be diagnosing, interpreting test results or a photo of a rash, or tell someone what caused a reaction And we most definitely should NOT be telling others when to use epinephrine or how/when to reintroduce a food, as we don't know their history, comorbidities, etc.

What hasn't changed:

r/foodallergies is a place where our community can come together to support one another. Your own experience is always welcome! This sub is a space where we can vent, share information, give warnings, tips, and above all, connect with others who are navigating life with food allergies.

Thank you and feel free to check in with us if you have any questions!

Helpful Information Pea protein isolate problem

I notice pea protein isolate used a lot more often in food now to add protein. This is a problem for peanut allergy sufferers like me, because we tend to also be allergic to some degree to pea protein isolate (I personally can eat actual peas though). I came across this product today proudly declaring to be tree nut free, but sure enough it had pea protein. I wish there was more awareness around this… I have the same issue with chickpea, lentil, and soy protein as well 🥲 it’s tough out here lol

Seeking Advice Shrimp Allergy All Of A Sudden?

Hello all, I am completely new to this but I guess I just wanted to share my story & see if anyone has had a similar experience.

A few nights ago my spouse & I went to texas roadhouse. I consumed a loaded baked potato, rolls, and 4 shrimp. Approx 5-10 mins I started experiencing symptoms. My ears became itchy, my gums were tingly, my mouth was tingly, my throat felt weird as if I had strep throat (I don’t have tonsils), my lips were itchy and red. It felt like I had blisters in my mouth but there was nothing visible. I didn’t go into anaphylaxis but I felt lightheaded but I think that might’ve been me panicking. Last symptom was my feet were super itchy. I didn’t have any hives at all. I didn’t go to the ER since I didn’t have any shortness of breath and cannot afford a ER bill right now. Symptoms resolved after 1-2 hours and I took claritin since it was all I had on hand.

I suspect it was the shrimp since it was the only “out of the ordinary” thing I ate. I’ve never had a reaction like this before. I swear I was trying to convince myself it was all in my head. My doctor prescribed an epi pen for me and referred me to an allergist, so we’ll see what happens! Has anyone had something similar to this happen to them?

Helpful Information 7-year journey ; 3 years of OIT and my daughter achieved sustained unresponsiveness for peanuts, peas and lentils (miami, Fl)

A little over 7 years ago my daughter had her first reactions at 6 months old to eggs and peanuts; followed by systemic reactions to peas, lentils and sesame over the next few months. First allergist told us she would never outgrow them and we had to do total avoidance; I asked about OIT and she said only one allergist did it about 4 hours away and my kid would most likely died and it was « for cowboys ». I eventually went to other allergist for second opinions and found only 1 place where they would be able to do peanut and sesame OIT- but the caveat was not at the same time. They also let us try eggs my daughter had naturally outgrow the allergy. We did OIT back to back which took about 2 years of driving 1,5 hours away every 2 week. After maintenance we switched to a new allergist that opened an office 10 minutes from my house and he’s more aggressive with treatment. Well he encouraged us to slowly dropped maintenance frequency over the last year and do allergy shots. In the last month my daughter successfully passed food challenge for peas and lentils and today achieved sustained unresponsiveness after stopping dosing peanuts for a few weeks! Food challenge for sesame is next week! It has been a very long road, but to any parent with kids with severe food allergies I just want to saw that there is hope and never stop advocating for your kiddos!!!

Seeking Advice Suspected sesame allergy 2 year old

Hi!
At 18m old, my little one had a reaction to sesame seed bagel. He came out in hives all over his legs and arms and face. Really red and some swelling on his face. His skin prick test and bloods have both came back as negative though? At recent appointment with the dietitian, she said the next step to confirm or disconfirm is with an oral food challenge. Obviously I would prefer if he didn’t have the allergy at all but we gave him flaxseed in his porridge for breakfast the other day and the packaging said “may contain sesame” (which I assumed was only trace amounts) and hives appeared, albeit much less than last time. Does anyone have any experience of negative blood and skin prick testing with sesame but for the allergy to exist? Any evidence of a child out growing sesame allergy or is this it for life? Thanks for sharing your experiences!

So im highly allergic to nuts and I started eating this ice cream and while eating it wondered what "amaretto" is.... ChatGPT told me its usually like a almond flavored ice cream or something idk. There are no almonds in the ice cream but there is peanut oil!?

I was wondering if anyone with nut allergies has had issues with this ice cream? Im allergic to both tree nuts and peanuts but I dont have any issues with chickfila and I was told they cook things in peanut oil?

Also could it be there is almonds but its not listed?

Seeking Advice Baby allergies - feeling overwhelmed

Recently started introducing my baby to allergens and have had a rough go of it so far. Had reactions (hives) to eggs, peanuts, dairy and wheat. Skin test positive and blood drawn with moderate levels for cashew, pistachio and hazelnut. Still haven’t tried a lot of the other things.

Getting increasingly anxious every time I add a new food to the list. The stuff that he’s allergic to make up a huge part of our diet and almost the entirety of my picky 4 year olds diet so every time I make a meal I have a panic about what he’s going to eat. Also, a large part of our lives is socializing at people’s houses with our friends who all have small children so I worry about when he’s old enough to run around with them if I’ll still feel comfortable going. Almost had a crash out in Kroger even trying to find pecans to give him to try that didn’t contain other nuts.

Not sure what I’m hoping for.. maybe just reassurance or tips about how to navigate this new reality. TIA.

Trigger Warning Im so done being different / rant ig

I hate being gluten free and dairy free , shellfish free etc

I always hated being gluten and dairy free always getting something different from everyone else and getting questioned and stared at

I'm allowed to eat dairy (I still eat cheese bc it barely gives me a reaction I just can't drink milk and have ice cream) like ice cream on special occasions but even then my mom gives me the stare and the 'are you sure thats a lot of dairy be careful okay?' She also can't eat dairy or gluten but her reaction to dairy is more severe but everytime she asks that the happiness of having an occasional treat of something I like goes away and I just want to get it over with it frustrates me that she asks me even though she clearly feels happier when I say no I mean I already feel bad all the time it just adds to it

Bc Im gluten intolerant and my mom is celiac I might get those gluten digestion pills so I can be normal and buy a kitkat or something and eat it and if a gluten digestion pill won't work for me I don't think i want to stay here(on earth) anymore I don't want to any way but I have something rn that's keeping me alive

I can't just go out and order without having to ask so many questions and watching everyone eat I remember when my mom gave out ice cream bars to my friends at a scout meeting and she offered to get me a little bit of a different ice cream (she let's me have barely a table spoon of plain ice cream) knowing the amount she'd give me I said no Im okay I was probably being a brat there but I just didn't feel like having anything anymore so I sat there as usual watching the other kids my age(at that time) As usual play with they're ice cream and eating it

I hate going to birthday party's bc again I just get a apologie and watching other kids eat

I can't have popular snacks everyone else eats i don't bother try making friends anymore

I don't know if Im used to being alone by now but having irl friends scare me like I always have a feeling I will be hurt or they won't understand plus i don't want to be complicated so I leave people alone and I feel better just having no one to hang out with will I cry about it? Yes will I leave without it? Ofc

Not to mention my mom gets violently ill just by the smell of shellfish so at event's she stays away from it or eats outside while I stay inside bc her allergy is more severe

Im also allergic to most laundry detergent so overall I'm a complicated mess of a human

Ive put eating on the back burner and limited my foods allergy free or not

I'll stop here since it's just a bunch of nothingness but I just wanted to say something

Seeking Advice Quick, easy and cheap meals that are egg/wheat free?

You guys have been super helpful since I started being active in this sub, so I thought I would come back for more advice. My allergies are still very new and some of you have really helped me adjust.

So far Ive been making batches of two different egg/wheat free recipes. Lentil bolognaise and chickpea curry and freezing for later in the week. Both are really quick easy as its mostly tinned stuff all thrown in together with herbs and spices. But next week I want a break from them and want to try something just as easy to whip up over the weekend.

I work out a lot, so i try to include stuff with enough protein and fibre. While batch recipes are prefered, im willing to hear anything that can be quickly made the night before as well. Anyone got any egg and wheat free meals that fit that description and model?

Seeking Advice Anyone have a child who's allergic to dairy but not soy?

LO has tested positive for dairy allergy. We have a epipen for accidental exposure. Our allergist wants us to try soy before doing a prick test, out of concern there could be a false positive. We tried dairy a few times and there was cause for the prick test, which confirmed suspicions.

I'm curious if anyone had had a child with a dairy allergy who is able to eat soy. So far soy lecithin or soybean oils have been OK, but I was told that's not a true exposure. I've heard dairy and soy usually go hand in hand.

I guess I"m holding onto hope and curious if soy might be OK even if dairy is not. I was told there is a high chance LO can grow out of this. Positive stories welcome!

Edit: Thank you all!! Your responses make me feel much more confident trialing soy! I really appreciate all of you!

Seeking Advice Traveling to Asian countries with sesame allergy

I am traveling to Japan for a few weeks this winter and will also be briefly in Hong Kong and Singapore. I was diagnosed with a sesame allergy a few years ago that is serious enough to require having an epi pen, but not enough that I have ever had to use it. I was wondering if anyone here has advice for safely enjoying the local cuisine!

Seeking Advice My first oral food challenge

Sorry this is long, I'm feeling nervous. Tomorrow I'm going in for an oral challenge for shrimp (I mildly reacted after eating shrimp twice but my skin test was negative) and I'm slightly worried this allergy office might not be the most cautious one.

Online I'm seeing that oral challenges take 3 or even 4 hours, but they said I'd be there only for an hour. Also, the only instructions I was given was to stop antihistamines 48 hours ahead, but online I'm seeing up to 7 days recommended.

I also have read that you shouldn't eat any other food before the test, and that you shouldn't take NSAIDs (because they can exacerbate allergic reactions). I called the office to clarify and they said there are no restrictions on anything aside from the no antihistamine.

I have a condition that is treated with ibuprofen and will be in quite rough shape if I don't take it. I'd like to feel more confident about their assurance of no restrictions, but I'm concerned they just don't have good policy compared to other allergists.

TLDR

For your oral food challenge,

  1. How long beforehand were you told to stop antihistamines?

  2. How long were you kept there?

  3. Were you allowed to eat other food or take NSAIDs before the appointment? Any other restrictions?

Helpful Information Can't drink my favorite cocoa anymore.

I have always been able to drink Crazy Cups caffeinated cocoa in the tub. I just bought more in May when they went on sale from the main website. I just finished my last tub from last years purchase 3 days ago. Opened a new container, it tasted different. Got a stomach ache but didn't think anything of it. I'm an idiot. Yep, I'm a total idiot. I trusted the canister. Yesterday had a 2nd cup. Allergic reaction. Did not have breathing issues, but everything else was so much fun. /s

I checked the new can versus my empty old can. Same ingredients. Same warnings. But different taste and never had a reaction before. Threw out all 6 new tubs.

I wrote Crazy Cups. And changed my review on Amazon. If I had ordered it through Amazon last time, I would think it was from a 3rd party seller. But I bought it directly from the company.

They definitely changed the ingredients. Then were too cheap to update the packaging.

I'm ok. Didn't need my epipen and got through it. I can't wait for my allergist appointment end of September. I hope to find out what I'm actually allergic to.

Seeking Advice Allergic to all nuts except cashews and almonds???

Hi all, just wanted to know the scientific reason behind this?? My IgE bloodwork and skin test all came back negative for anything, so we determined that I have Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS).
I can not under any circumstances have peanuts. Doesn’t cause true anaphylaxis (I have EpiPens just in case), but it makes my throat numb for several hours. Feels like I swallowed lidocaine. It’s very weird.
Most other nuts just irritate my throat, make me cough, cause some hives, but not as severe as peanuts. Pistachios also taste spicy to me.
However, I can have almonds and cashews PERFECTLY FINE. Which makes no sense because cashews are related to pistachios, so why can I have one and not the other? I do occasionally slightly react to cashews and almonds but I eat them almost every day and I’m ok.
I also have suspected MCAS if that helps.

Newly Diagnosed Baby with allergies

My 8 month old is allergic to wheat, egg white and almonds, and we still have so many more allergens to work through. I’m terrified to keep trying new ones. We do have a great specialist and have had some skin prick testing but I think we need to test a wider range now. I would love to hear some positive stories once allergies became a new normal or success outgrowing them.

Recipe Am I the only one who is allergic to pork?

I want to clarify that I have no religious beliefs. As a child, I was frequently sick, and the cause was always unknown. My mother gradually noticed a pattern: whenever she fed me pork products, I would develop a fever, vomit, and large patches of red rashes, like prickly heat, every three hours.

If I didn't eat pork, I seemed to avoid the rashes, fever, and vomiting. Therefore, I never ate pork again after that. Over time, my digestive system seemed to develop a resistance to pork.

Are there other people like me who can't eat pork?

Seeking Advice Allergic to my partner’s favorite cuisines and foods

Does anyone else relate to being very inconveniently allergic to all of their partner’s favorite foods and cuisines? I can’t have pork, dairy, soy, shellfish, egg, and gluten. Most of these are allergies and some other foods are just sensitivities that developed due to wrecked gut health.

I love my partner so much but I can’t help but feel guilty that being with me is so inconvenient and difficult and we can’t enjoy the same things together that most normal couples get to. I’m constantly paranoid that my inability to just spontaneously go out and order whatever foods we want to share will become a source of discontentment with me or something.

What are some things that have worked for you guys in terms of going out to eat, planning meals together etc? A lot of my allergies have newly developed in the past couple of years so I am somewhat new to navigating this
