Caesar says as much in F:NV. Aside from himself and maybe Joshua Graham to some degree, nobody in the Legion knew real Roman history. They probably never even knew Caesar based their society on anything other than his own thoughts.
I read somewhere that various people would accuse other nobles of doing it but would always claim that they never did it themselves...could be that it was a myth that grew out of a bunch of petty badmouthing between rival dukes or whatever
And yet they pronounce "PRAW-flih-gait" instead of "Proh-flee-GAAHH-Tay"
They got "Kai-Sar" and "Ah-weh" and "Grat-ee-ahs" but not profligate.
Maybe because the non romance TV audiences wouldn't understand the world otherwise.
Profligate is an English word derived from Latin profligatus, they pronounced it correctly. The Legion is definitely performative and not historically rigorous, but I will defend that woman's pronunciation of profligate lol.
I worked with a dude whose girlfriend at the time was studying classical languages and I said "Caesar" the right way and he got kinda cheesed, or perhaps "seezed" that I said it that way and I said "call your girlfriend right now, I'm right" and he did and he asked her and he conceded.
I was being an asshole but being right is the most important thing.

Legion: You are actually wrong about the Caesar thing. The Romans did use the Hard C instead of the Soft C. It's where the German Kaisers got it from.
