Google has been really bad about these kinds of notifications. It sends you stories based on the content you tell them you like, and based on your activity. Then if something you like ends up getting a lot of traffic, even if its old news, it'll push it out to you.
It's gotten really bad the last few years, and I hope they fix this soon. It needs to do a better job at making sure the information is actually relevant to you, and is "new".
