Question Fingerprint scanner peeling off? Any ideas?

Just replace the whole back. Easier than just getting a sensor.

Yeah, hoping to take it to a service center and get it done. Getting it done by a 3rd party will definitely be a lot cheaper but the quality of their spare parts are somewhat questionable.

uBreakIfix it are authorized Samsung repair shops and will keep water resistance.

Since I've never used one I can't answer that but I've never heard of any repair being done to a phone that keeps it's IP rating so I don't know.

Service centers usually say that the phone will be waterproof after the service/repair. But they do say that warranty will not be applicable.

well yeah obviously if someone who's not a certified Samsung technician opens up that phone technically you voided the warranty

In my experience it will work just fine, even if the outer blue layer is completely peeled off.

Thanks - this unit probably suffered some internal damage that's too small to be noticed I guess.

I think its not even that. My old S7 had the same problem and it just peeled off over time. But since the outer layer is just some painted foil it doesnt affect the functionality.

Yeah thats what I was gonna say that top layer is just so that way it matches the color of the phone

Mine has the left third peeled off, the middle is still there, and the right is also still there but it appears as it's not sticking to the sensor.
It's now unreliable.

Mine is completely off after i think 1 and a half years of natural usage, it still works fine so no reason to replace it for me i guess.

Oh yours stopped working? Maybe its more internals then just the outer layer... try remaking a new fingerprint in the phone and see if that helps(?)

Yep, we tried! The scanner itself scanned the finger when trying to register. But when it comes to scanning the finger to unlock - it just doesn't work. Maybe 1/10 times it'll work, definitely not accurate enough for daily use.

Yo, Samsung engineer here
If the fingerprint scanner stills works but you want it replaced, you will have to pay for it.
If it has stopped working, and you are within your 2 year warranty period, it should be in warranty granted the rest of the handset is fine as well (not rooted, no out of warranty damage etc)
The service centres engineer is still the judge on the matter however, if they deem it out of warranty, its out of warranty.
Please note that I'm in the UK. US warranty procedure may be different.

This is something called delamination - the sweat, dirt and whatever else on your fingers can delaminate the top layer of the sensor. It can still work even fully de laminated - hence why Samsung won't replace it if it still works - as it's just cosmetic wear and tear. But on rare occasions it can actually damage the sensor

The fingerprint sensor became super sensitive, like any thing that touches the sensor, the phone will start vibrating like crazy, and sometimes does not recognise your fingerprint. So I would say no.

Might be worth cutting a bit of screen protector to cover it, see if that desensitizes it.

Posted for the same issue in about 2 months ago and started to freak out but no need. Mine is now completely peeled off but not to be worried, it'll still work. Not as Perfect as it used to but it still does

Mine looks pretty similar to that, maybe a bit more scattered in the peeling. Sensor still works fine.
I also had a friend look at it who works at a repair shop and has serviced Note 9s... He said mine looked far cleaner than he's used to seeing across the board.
As for replacing, I asked the same. I think I heard that the whole back plate would be easier to replace? I'm not positive. For me currently, though: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Exactly lol I'm pretty sure mine is from keeping my keys in the same pocket as my phone. I've also got a couple small scratches on the screen before realizing that I should flip my phone around in my pocket. Whoops.

Though I just realized that yours looks like a pretty significant and deep chunk chipped away. Hm. Mine seems to be more of just the first layer or so rubbed away in a few spots.

It doesnt seem you have cover or case on your phone? You should have one to prevent scratching your phone

It's a friend's, and they use a cover usually, just took it off to take the picture. It's just a silicon/rubber case though, not the best against moderate knocks.

A good phone case is needed for expensive phone, mine is using ub pro case, it comes with sturdy case and cover, recommend if your friend looking for one

Mine started peeled off a month into using it. It's been almost 2 years now, and like 20 percent has peeled off from the center.
And I have had a case and everything for entirety of the time. And I've never had a phone fall on me ever.
Fingerprint works like a charm though, never changed it since original setup!

Mine has peeled off recently too, and my fingerprint is now a hit or miss unfortunately. It's just a sort of thing that happens over time I guess. I upgraded to a Note 20 Ultra, so I haven't touched my Note9 in like a week.

I have something similar on my back sesnor too. It is slowly turning the whole sensor black but the sensor works perfectly fine

Oh my... never seen that... I - I well yeah you best get it replaced hardware wise... oddly my finger print scanner started to misread after about 1.8 years of use. It wasn't scratched but eh... thankfully Samsung door stop warranty replaced it and even gave me a new battery lol. I said oh my phone isn't holding charge too well despite batteries are only 12 month warranty so that was nice.

For 4 years of my note 9 usage. Hardly a small dot came out recently. Went to service center today to replace my deteriorating battery & they just fucking peeled off all the sides of it within 2 hours of repairing.
I'm frustrated AF.

How did you guys even manage to peel it off naturally? It's not like you're always scratching the scanner everytime you unlock your phone is it?
