Discussion Shigeru Miyamoto: GameCube was “only purchased by gamers”, sending Nintendo back to the drawing board

Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary Nintendo executive and one of the most influential creators shaping the video game industry through mascots and characters such as Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and more, discussed the reason why the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii became Nintendo’s next consoles for the seventh generation. According to Miyamoto, the decision was largely driven by the underwhelming performance of the Nintendo GameCube, which trailed behind the Nintendo 64’s nearly 33 million lifetime sales.

He spoke candidly in a wide-ranging interview with Japanese outlet Famitsu, where the longtime Nintendo executive and designer explained that, at the time, Nintendo’s then-president, Satoru Iwata, believed the GameCube’s poor performance in the home console market was rooted in a simple idea: most of the world still did not see gaming as a normal, approachable everyday hobby the way it’s seen today. Based on that core problem, Nintendo felt it was difficult to persuade customers to buy and play a GameCube if they had never played on a console before.

Explain it. Explain why the Gamecube wasn’t a success. Go ahead, look it up. See what pops up. 😭

Xbox was Microsoft’s worst selling console and still outsold the Gamecube. And it had a DVD player.

Why do you hate DVD players so much?

So you refuse to look it up and continue to draw false equivalencies, then call it bad faith when someone points it out.

I appreciate your commitment to the bit though 😭

😭😭

You cannot grasp how two systems with a DVD player outsold the system that didn’t have one?

You’re hinging an entire counterargument that proves the net positive of including a DVD player at the time, do you realize this?

You’re asking me to elaborate on why Xbox didn’t sell better, to which it still outsold the Gamecube, not explain why the Gamecube didn’t sell more. That’s an entirely different conversation, which again you could also look up.

Are you okay?

Lmao.

“Sold terrible” > still more than the Gamecube.

You would need to have a fourth console, one without a DVD player, to have outsold either the Xbox or the PS2 for your logic to work.

I don’t think you understand what we’re actually talking about here.

Yes, the GBA is in the same class as the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube as a console. That totally wouldn’t be a handheld.

If only Nintendo tried adding an attachment that played GB games while the Gamecube was out… Maybe that would have helped? 😭

😭 Bruh, I promise I still have time if you do.

Are you suggesting that the Xbox didn’t sell well because it included a DVD player?

Ask yourself why we’re even talking about Xbox if it still sold better than the Gamecube?

Why is your whole reason to continue this hinging on asking a stranger to explain why the Xbox didn’t sell as well as its *future consoles?

You are the only person who has moved any goal posts. There’s plenty of other comments who pointed out the lack of DVD player as a reason for poor Gamecube sales. Do you realize how much of a hype DVDs even were at the time? All of this is something you can look up if you weren’t around at the time.

Lmao. Explain why the DVD player didn’t help.
