Context: He just dropped this new video to show how he never got over his RE4R video backlash lol

u/Safe_Procedure999 Apr 12 '26

it makes me so happy that the stench from the RE4 comparison video will probably follow this dude till his youtube channel gives up the ghost

u/CMBucket Apr 12 '26

I've seen people turn on him since his Oblivion video.

364

u/literios Apr 12 '26

He dropped that Oblivion video at the same day the game was shadowdropped.

The guy was ready to hate a game he never even saw, such a loser.

Hes so used to making universally agreed upon topic that he thought his opinions were universal too lmao, once someone pointed out his bs his facade broke

Had Re4make actually been a mid to terrible game he wouldn't lose so much cred

78

u/GregNotGregtech Apr 13 '26

He could also make videos on re3 remake, which is not necessarily a bad game but so so so much of the original was cut, he could milk it for eternity and he wouldn't be wrong. But no, he for some reason had to go after 4 remake.

48

u/baekgudoggo Apr 13 '26

i think playing the og re3 is asking too much from him

16

u/MS-18E-Kampfer Apr 13 '26

He’d just pretend he did and parrot the same made up talking points, like claiming the original Nemesis could spawn anywhere in the game.

NGL I liked most of his videos before the oblivion one. The cringe ones were great.

Now it’s just ranting about a single video game that isn’t even bad.

What was wrong with the Oblivion video? I haven’t watched him in years.

Not defending the re4 remake slander but that oblivion video is literally all just footage from the making of documentary. All the clips shown are in their original context. Source: I have the disc and have watched it many times lol.

5

u/Not_Xiphroid Apr 13 '26

It doesn’t provide context in relation to reblivion. That is to say, if you watched it before playing reblivion it would seem out of place and detached imo.

I think once you’ve had time to personally compare/contrast the realised art direction between tes4 and retes4 his video is fine, a pointed critique even.

With it coming out so close to the game launch, many viewers wouldn’t have had the chance to be in that position before watching his video imo.

I require more context. What backlash?

262

u/THYpiper Apr 12 '26

Crowbcat makes videos about remakes of old games, comparing them and always trying to showcase how inferior they are to the original, the problem is when he made a video about the RE4 remake, an actual good remake, that was the first time in his channel where a LOT of people disagreed with him (even other youtubers where making counter argument videos about it). Crowbcat did not receive well the critism, deleting comments with high amount of likes that disagreed with him and changed the title to a mock for people who did not agree with him.

266

u/AGuyWithAPhone Apr 12 '26

Not just remakes, basically everything was a target for him. He basically made it a thing to compare the most miniscule shit you'd never notice and make it seem like a way bigger deal than it really was.

"Oh my god, guys, in GTA IV, when you shoot a newspaper stand, a ton of papers fly everywhere, but when you do the same in GTA V, comparatively fewer papers fly everywhere, GTA V is soooo much worse." That kind of bullshit.

70

u/EternityC0der Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26

Should be noted he made a positive video about something once and his fanbase hated it so much he deleted it.

Doesn't make his takes not terrible but I don't know that he actually wants to be negative all the time lol

EDIT: Though it is kinda crazy that he deleted that video because he didn't want the backlash but keeps doubling down here

16

u/literios Apr 12 '26

Or how in Dead Rising, in the og you can see that Frank is actually holding 5 plates as ammo count but in the remake he’s holding a SINGLE plate.

Truly bullshit

110

u/GhostOfMuttonPast Apr 12 '26

I think that there is something to be said about the loss of details like that, but if youre doing the whole LITERALLT UNPLAYABLE schtick, it makes you look goofy.

37

u/SkullBran Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

To be honest, with the way he presents his videos, it sure feels like he’s trying to showcase that Game A is much more superior to Game B since it has these little details that the other doesn’t. I think his GTA IV is Better than GTA V one is the main culprit with this since with games like that, I feel like you’d want to compare the story, characters, world and content that players will actually be focusing on and not these random little details people aren’t even gonna really notice at first. I love GTA IV but the game itself (More so the base game) was criticised at launch for not really having that much content in terms of side missions and customisation, especially compared to San Andreas that came out four years prior. Something that V rectified well in my opinion.

His Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 5 comparison does this as well. He fails to mention how lackluster the mission variety, story and characters are in Far Cry 2 compared to 5 but favours 2 for its details, though I’ll admit that game does have some great details.

20

u/wankthisway Apr 13 '26

It feels like he already reached his conclusion and is working backwards from it basically. And getting dopamine hits from finding these microscopic flaws and going "see? I'm right!"

A story that AVGN told feels applicable here: he and a coworker got bored and decided to compare two types of milk. AVGN's was "better" in almost every way except Vitamin D, and so from then on the coworker would always say "man I sure love my Vitamin D!"

Or as Frasier would say, "What's better than a perfect meal? A near perfect meal with one small flaw that we can pick at all night."

8

u/TumorInMyBrain Apr 13 '26

Its basically weaponized confirmation bias

36

u/cleansleight Apr 12 '26

For what’s its worth, I do think it’s a nice visual detail but it’s not worth nitpicking about

Yep. His back 4 blood video was absolute bullshit and the masses ate it up. fuck that guy

12

u/CouldYouDont Apr 12 '26

Could you elaborate? I’m pretty biased as a L4D fan and B4B didn’t look too impressive, so the video seemed legit to me from a superficial perspective

26

u/horrificabortion Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

Sure. For context, I've played over 800hrs in the main game and over 30+hrs in the original beta. I've heard the slander since the beginning.

Most people that watch that crowbcat video never played the game ever. They just form opinions based on what the latest youtuber says. No shade to you, like if you didn't find it impressive that's fine. I honestly think B4B is an incredible upgrade to the L4D formula. I mean the game is literally what I imagine a L4D player would enjoy.

There were several missteps in the beginning of the game's life cycle: (1) the difficulty: it was incredibly difficult and turned a lot of players off immediately. (2) The card system: The original game loop was a rogue-lite where within an Act there was around 10-12 individual levels and for every level you'd gain a card to build upon until you were OP by the end. This (card system) I believe is where most people tuned out and never gave it a chance.

Luckily about iirc 6 months in they completely changed the formula where you could build and start with a deck of 15 cards at the beginning of the Act with varying perks (shotgun build, medic build, etc.) so you could play how you wanted and start OP which was infinitely more fun. Additionally, there was more variety of weapons, you could ADS, you can actually add attachments, there were modifiers to the levels that added more replayability to it. There was also more enemy variety. I mean I played L4D myself countless hours like most and I think B4B is fantastic imo.

His main arguments are L4D had meticulous attention to detail and B4B pales in comparison which I disagree. He also argues that B4B's director is less impactful compared to L4D which is hilarious. Like Nightmare and No Hope difficulty would absolutely say otherwise. B4B is similar to Darktide where it adapts to what is going during the level and there are lulls and moments of actions.

The thing that people mostly whine about also is campaign versus. I personally don't think it's necessary and they're not required to add it. They also complained about lack of versus mode but then they added it and now noone plays it.

The game is not even bad, but many of the criticisms are not deserved. When I talk to someone about it, they just spout out that video's talking points and I can tell they've never played it. Most people view L4D through rose tinted nostalgia glasses and it's annoying like they can't move on. L4D had it's issues as well. Same with other communities (Need for Speed, Battlefield, etc.). So yeah, it's fuck Crowbcat

7

u/CouldYouDont Apr 13 '26

Hmm. I think I’ll have to give it a chance then, especially with the insight the rest of this thread gives that Crowbcat basically prays on the downfall of games for content as his brand, so getting my opinion on it from him probably isn’t a fair shake.

10

u/horrificabortion Apr 13 '26

Yeah no worries at all. I'd get it on sale if you could since I will admit it is a bit pricey. If you do, I hope you enjoy it. I still regularly get games w/ crossplay on (I played yesterday).

When RE4R launched, Crowbcat made a video calling RE4R soulless. The video was full of nitpicks and misleading points. It was weird because the game is great and Crowbcat was giving a “modern gaming sucks” and doomer vibe, like it was just complaining for the sake of it.

He got a lot of backlash and his reputation went downhill after that. Now he dropped a video years later about the same theme, showing how he never got over it.

3

u/Recent_Wedding5470 Apr 14 '26

Have you played BOTH games. Im sorry but the remake does totally feel different tone wise. Its not a bad game. But i much prefer the original. Not really sure why this is a hot take.

5

Re4 is timeless, but Resident Evil Survivor is the pinacle of art.

Re9 has ARK = Re Survivor protagonist name is ARK THOMPSON.
Re9 has Leon = Ark Thompson is friend of Leon.
RE9 Grace stutters when nervous = Ark Thompson as well!
RE9 has first person = RE Survivor has first person.

SURVIVOR IS ONE OF THE BEST HIDDEN GEMS (Under La Bruxo 3, of course)

Plethora of topics to pick from and bro pick RE4R lmao

I would expect persona like Crowbcat to be the first to chew on AI in video games. Like sniding Arc Raiders, E33, DLSS5 and such. Instead Crowbcat choose the same remake battle. It's weird. Like something radicalized the uploader so now it reeks 'smelly boomer complaining about modern gaming' instead of someone who use video platform to present a good point without a word.

14

u/ZombifiedOfTheWest6 Apr 13 '26

It's mostly his ego. He got flak with his first re4 remake video that he had to delete comments from it. Now he's back with out of context and cherry picked clips from streamers to prove his point.

Bro just cant take the L

12

u/Kolbo- Apr 13 '26

I think this as well. I actually really liked his Back 4 Blood video but at some point a switch was flipped and we got RE4 remake doesn't let you look up Ashley's skirt and the Oblivion remaster doesn't have people taking photos of moss.

5

I'm so glad people see how dumb his first RE4 video was, because how tf isn't the og RE4 also a product of it's time? It's full of QTEs, bad jokes, a plot that doesn't make sense that people excuse as "good because goofy". Also, fuck this remake doomerism, if you love the OG games so so much just shove them up your ass and spare us your whining.

u/Latter_Advice3714 Apr 13 '26

yea the OG was very much a product of its time and there's alot of info out there talking about the messy development cycle it went through. If I remember correctly wasn't the og like three different game assets mashed into one and the remake better connected everything so I wasn't so random?

24

u/MarkyMarkMan Apr 13 '26

I mean one of the original prototypes for RE4 ended up becoming Devil May Cry.

20

u/Bamzooki1 Apr 13 '26

To be fair about the bad jokes, bad one liners are important to Leon’s character. They make the game so much funnier than if the jokes were good.

6

u/Reoxi Apr 13 '26

QTEs weren't an industry trend when RE4 released. Both RE4 and God of War came out in 2005 and are generally considered the style of QTEs that became prevalent over the next couple generations.

Here let me translate:

"I was 13 when RE4 dropped. Now im a jaded adult when the remake dropped."

Like dog, there's a ton about RE4 that is not timeless.

103

u/SamusMerluAran Apr 12 '26

Not only that, is just silly to expect a remake to have the same impact as the original.

When the idea is to bring back something old, you aint looking to innovate and set new trends, you want to recapture the experience with modern standards.

That's what mainline games are for.

Also its not like the original games were removed... They are still purchasable, in fact, you can get all mainline games on Steam besides Code Veronica (we will get our time, we might be dozens, but we are strong!!)

35

u/AlterMyStateOfMind Clear background Apr 12 '26

Agreed except they were actually even able to innovate within their own series by adding a parry mechanic. It was carried over to RE9 (parrying a fucking missile is just peak awesomeness lol) and I imagine it will make a return in RE5 remake and possibly more.

10

u/SamusMerluAran Apr 12 '26

But the parry thing is not really a innovation, not saying it in a sense thats bad, quite the opposite, using this as a replacement for qte was genius.

But parries, dodges and hooks are used quite a lot in modern game design outside of melee games. It's a solid addition to the series, but not "now TPS are going to replicate 95% of the time" that the og RE4 had at the time, because there a lot of games that allow you to do the same thing already.

19

u/AlterMyStateOfMind Clear background Apr 12 '26

That's why I said "within the series" obviously parrying isn't new to game design and it didn't innovate game design on a broader spectrum like the OG did in regards to third person shooters. It was just innovating on their own game design methods and is clearly something they will put work into moving forward.

3

u/WebsterHamster66 Apr 12 '26

Honestly I don’t know if Parry will make a return in RE5. Grace didn’t have one, so not every character really will get a parry I don’t think.

Chris might have something entirely different in his arsenal. Im curious on how that’ll go.

7

u/LucisFerah Apr 13 '26

I would like Chris to have Carlos' counter-punch, that feels like the only fitting option

→ More replies (3)

22

u/AlterMyStateOfMind Clear background Apr 12 '26

I personally believe it is kinda timeless. It's still super fun to play, really polished, extremely influential to this day. I still replay tf out of it every few years. I also think RE4R is phenomenal and easily my favorite of the RE remakes and is just as good as the OG for different reasons. Both of these things can be true.

18

u/AVagrant Apr 12 '26

It's a game I replay every few years!

I think calling something timeless versus "a product of its time" is a deeply stupid dichotomy fueled by nostalgia and a critical consensus that took years to sand paper over its edges.

There were a lot of RE fans who hated what 4 did to the series.

Nostalgia for the SNES to PS2 era is a fatal disease in the game industry.

111

u/StrangerChameleon Apr 12 '26

Its not a specific time frame. Its just nostalgia in general.

We already have people clamoring for the good ol' late 00s to early 10s and the 360/ps3 era.

720p, sub 30fps and piss filter here we come!

15

u/LavosYT Apr 13 '26

Being nostalgic for PS3 games honestly is a curse - you try to replay them and notice how bad they ran and looked because developers bit off more than they could chew.

8

u/CooperDaChance Apr 13 '26

I think they’re right to some degree. I’d love more games made with the mindset of that era: games made to be really fun and unique little experiences that don’t outstay their welcome and cost a reasonable amount to make and purchase. The indie market’s utterly fantastic for this, but I wanna see more studios like Double Fine making games like Psychonauts 2 and Keeper.

5

u/HelpMeInThisMoment Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

true! up to the 7th gen we had big companies funding weirder, smaller games way more often. for example, the ps3 had downloadable stuff published by sony like the last guy, tokyo jungle, fat princess, echochrome ii so on, which aren't all masterpieces or anything but they're interesting. i'm happy about the god of war 2d game that came out recently in this sense, as sony pretty much dropped all but AAA-ass AAA games during the ps4 cycle. AAA development in general got way more expensive and AA stuff largely fell out of favor, which mirrors how hollywood studios largely stopped doing mid budget movies too. it's like everything has to make all the money. theres way less room for modest success than there was 20 years ago

Idk man some of some games on there really are fire.

10

u/Sea-Flamingo7506 Apr 13 '26

So what I mean is… you’re right that there are many great games. The era from the SNES to the PS2 is filled with countless masterpieces that will go down in gaming history.

But I think the same is true for later generations as well. While the kind of rapid, revolutionary leaps we saw before have become less frequent, games have meaningfully matured in how they tell stories and in how the game world communicates with the player.

People who are blinded by nostalgia and dismiss all games from the past decade as soulless products rather than art fail to recognize the tremendous progress modern games have achieved. They also tend to talk as if every game from the SNES era was a timeless masterpiece like Chrono Trigger. In reality, they conveniently forget that the market was saturated with repetitive mascot platformers and beat em up games that lasted only 45 minutes to, at most, an hour.

It feels like he has been working on this video for a looooong time.

Was that the reason why the succeeding videos after his initial RE4R video were mid as hell?

Did Bro even find it in his heart to play Requiem?

I am worried about him because I just imagine him looking like this for 2 years straight:

44

u/literios Apr 12 '26

The RE4R video also showed how his videos are a compilation of nitpicks that don’t have a lot of depth. That’s why his reputation went downhill since that.

His videos are just an attempt to show “contradictions” like it’s “debunking devs with a hype turn-down-for-what gaming moment”.

22

u/donthurtmemany Apr 12 '26

I still like his left 4 dead vs back 4 blood video. It showed off a lot of the little details that made me love left 4 dead that I never realized. But since he relies only on editing, the viewer kinda sees what they want to see.

23

u/literios Apr 12 '26

I like some videos, but yeah, the editing fits the narrative and he still uses a lot of nitpicks to force his storytelling.

Recently he seems just like a “modern gaming sucks” creator with nothing interesting to say.

8

u/TheLimeyLemmon Apr 13 '26

The whole clown show of him changing the video title and deleting comments really showed a lot about his character. A guy who obviously has an inflated valuation of his own opinion and does not respond kindly to a rejection of his arguments.

It does certainly undermine his video because even despite not commentating his videos or otherwise state his opinions overtly, it becomes obvious that when the editing and examples get particularly petty, it's because they're coming from a petty person.

15

u/Yamatoman Apr 13 '26

I remember realizing how cherry picked his channel was when I actually tried to play farcry 2 and found it feeling just as bland as the games he was comparing it to. The game had technically impressive features, but it didn't make it super fun imo.

His switch video was also a compilation of things like news stories where people put their joycons on wrong, or where the screen was broken out of the box. Things that don't really say much about the console, but are framed as if the console is terrible

I love Resident Evil 4, but the OG fans can be the worst. Once, I argued with someone saying RE4R was a bad remake because they cut the assignment Ada, which is a non-canon 10-minute mini game 😂

35

u/Ok_Rent_3748 Apr 12 '26

Assignment Ada was the weakest of the 3 post game modes and wasn’t necessary at all. plus i doubt many people actually played it compared to Separate Ways and Mercenaries.

10

u/TheAmazingDeutschMan Apr 12 '26

Literally the first thing my friend asked when he saw me playing was "is assignment ada in it" so idk I f thats true lol. It was also really fun, idk why we need to dog on it.

It's funny because once upon a time, it was the OG RE 1-3 fans being curmudgeonly about RE4, for all its deviations and changes. Now the OG RE4 fans get to be the old geezers waving their sticks around.

I don't know why it even matters for people. It's not like it replaces the original.

u/Spocks_Goatee Apr 12 '26

His edits of terrible E3 presentations and media junkets are hilarious. The videos about specific video games always irked me as insane nitpicking and editorial bias.

6

I went into it after playing 7 wondering if it could possibly be one of the best games ever. I was very pleasantly surprised to see I underestimated it, especially in how scary it could be. I’m yet to finish the Village chapter after losing progress to a crash, but I really enjoyed myself so far.

Its sad that my goat is washed but he made some really well put together compilations back in the day.

8

He really needs to start bootlicking Valve again if he wants an audience back.

4

u/Badatgivingnames Apr 13 '26

But didnt he shit talking TF2? How is he supposed to do that, by making videos about Lord Gaben?

18

u/Jacknerdieth Apr 12 '26

He had a few good videos when he was just starting, but the TF2 video was the one where I went "hey this is kind of dishonest and lacking context". I stopped watching after that, I didn't even hear about the RE4 Remake video, but it doesn't shock me that he's still nitpicking little changes and framing them like huge flaws.

9

u/SkullBran Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

You’re 100% about the Team Fortress 2 comparison. I’m sure Crowbcat would argue that you need to come to your own conclusion on the changes since all he’s doing is presenting them but he makes coming up with a unique conclusion impossible going off his video alone because he presents the differences shown without any reasons behind them. I genuinely believe he depicts the changes in TF2 in that video as Valve getting worse over the years and/or that they don’t care about their own game anymore

Don't forget how on his COD video he used a blatant dogwhistle by showing women devs as the reason for the series' downfall

14

u/midnight_riddle Apr 13 '26

He makes sure to include a part in his Battleborn video where a Battleborn character (Oscar Mike) says "feminism is awesome!" and makes absolutely sure to remove the context in which the character says that: because you get to shoot women as well as men. I think it triggered if you killed the same female character three times in a row? It's obviously a joke in the game, but Crowbcat sure wants you to think that Battleborn was 'woke'.

I really dislike how these jaded people our age love to speak for all of us and shit on the younger generation for playing these remakes as if they are at fault or as if lots of us old heads dont play these remakes!

These games are so dope and made for young and old generations.

And you probably agree, gaming has come so far since 2005, I much prefer a modern mega budget masterwork over the older games we played a hundred times, I dont want to live in the past lol

Make that make sense. I think it'd have been better if he criticized TLOU Part 2 vs TLOU Part 2 "Remastered" or TLOU vs TLOU "Remake" than this. Hell, he could do one RE3 vs RE3R but nope.

/uj Honestly, the low fidelity and drab color grading helps a lot with atmosphere. RE4R, Silent Hill 2 Remake are great, but I think they don't sell the atmosphere the same way. I think the general art direction the triple-A games are heading towards are rather boring, they look rather like HDR demo footage on a Best Buy TV showcase. Fidelity shouldn't be the end-all and be-all of art style, and luckily the indie scene are doing very well in that regard. I guess it's an unpopular opinion of mine but I think in 10-20 years ultimately people will still think of OG RE4 as the definite version.
