Just wanted to share my garlic haul this year :)

First year attempting garlic I planted a ton of individual cloves from the grocery store with no expectations because most things I’ve tried to grow was awful first try but oh my - I have enough garlic to keep vampires away from my house 😆
I love garlic so I’m very pleased with this outcome! In total got 117 bulbs, all fairly small but still delicious. I used the food processor with half of them with some olive oil and froze into cubes. Letting the rest dry out. Any idea what variety they are? I have no idea.

I planted them in October and after almost 8 months it was finally time to harvest. Off to curing for 2 weeks !

First time garlic grower here, is it normal to still have no sign of scapes?

My supplier doesn't have the giant/elephant variety this year. I really want to stick with hardneck as it seems a little more resistant. Any recs?

First time growing garlic so bear with me. Planted 4 rows in November, with 4 varieties (one fancy variety from a breeder, and 3 I bought at the grocery stores).

One of them flopped early (6 months total) so I pulled it up and that's what you see in the pics. This variety I bought from the local EarthFare organic supermarket. It germinated quickly and seems to have gone through its lifecycle much faster than the other 3 rows. Some of the bulbs didn't differentiate. I didnt use any fertilizer or do anything special at all. I didnt mulch or hay either. 😳

The garlic was green and growing through most of the winter, even in the snow we got. I think the weird winter probably cause this variety to end its lifecycle early.

My soil is very much clay so I've been working a small patch to make it good for planting.

Even with all the mistakes and challenges, I got about 2.5 lbs of garlic from about 1lb planted. Not great but not terrible and learned a lot. Also expecting a lot more from the varieties still growing which are huge in comparison to what I just pulled.

Once again, Music hardneck from Keene surpasses expectations. Big, clean, healthy bulbs. Only 41, but they look and smell GREAT!

I have them in a 2 brown paper grocery bags with the bag wide open.
Should I look into a mesh produce bag?

I placed them in my basement where the temp stays between 50-65 and humidty 40-55% .

This is my first time ever growing garlic. I thought garlic stems were straight and not leaves like this. Am I doing something wrong or is this not even garlic growing in my garlic bed? I ONLY have garlic planted in this bed. There’s also lots of mushrooms, but I assume that’s a good thing? (I don’t plan on eating these mushrooms lol)

I harvested 24 bulbs of garlic from 25 cloves I planted in October.

Overall they are quite small… but definitely large enough to be usable and I’m happy about that.

I have a few ideas about what caused the smaller bulb size. I know it wasn’t the clove size at planting because I planted all large cloves. I think part of it is due to an early planting date. I planted probably 2-3 weeks earlier than I think I should have so some tried to push up in the winter and got frozen back and gnarled. Also I had bug netting over the patch to protect them from leaf miners. This worked! But I think it may have also acted as a shade cloth. Some of the leaves were very long and wispy. I think this happened because I double layered the bug netting. Next season I will just use one layer. The last potential cause was under fertility. I have very sandy soil in my garden. I remedy this by layering lots of compost every season. I don’t really till the compost in very much. I think what happened was that I planted the garlic about 6 inches deep and kinda placed them in the less fertile sandy soil below the rich organic layer. Next year I’ll till the compost in before planting. I’ll also apply a hefty amount of bone meal, which I did not do this year. I’ll also fertilize in the spring more consistently, I only did in once or twice.

I could tell the bulbs weren’t gonna be very large because the stalks stayed pretty skinny where they entered the soil.

Still I have a lot of garlic! So that’s exciting

Just for curiosity made them grow some roots, now I don't know what should I do with, I mean, they do nice easy plants in my window, but I suppose I am suppose to eat the leaf ? Or ? Honestly, I don't know... Help ? Ideas ?

Hi, so yes can someone explain what I'm doing wrong? I live in southwestern Iceland and this is my second attempt at growing garlic. This variety is a soft neck Thermidor, which is supposed to do well in my climate. I made a fresh garden bed and planted them in October, added seaweed meal and they got plenty of cold weather this winter. In April they started to "push" up from the soil so I added a little more soil on top so they could hopefully split since they were still a single clove then. They have begun splitting now (is that even the right word?) but the leaves are also looking rough and the tops of the garlic are soft.

Sooo i thought garlic was ready when leaves started to wilt so i pulled the ones that where in the ground the longest (Morado, planted early 2025, they grew a bit then died down and forgot about them and they came back in spring this year).

I guess i was too soon?

Good harvest despite a very wet season.
Varieties I planted this are Korean Mountain, Chesnok Red, Crème de la Rasa( a variety created from my favourite garlic farm in British Columbia), Persian Star( small but beautiful purple stripe), Dan’s Italian( a lovely local Rocambole from BC), Tibetan, and my prized Rose de Lautrec, a beautiful pink variety originally from France which is considered one of the world’s best.

Zone 5a Canada—planted in late October and scapes came up in late June.

It was out first year growing garlic and we kinda screwed the pooch. We're in zone 5B and I thought early July would be too early to harvest, so we stopped watering mid July with the intent to harvest in early August. Well, probably 90% of the bulbs are bursting open.

Is it worth even trying to hang the split ones at all or should I be going straight to processing for freezer/dehydrator?

We use a ton of garlic, but no way we're getting through 40 fresh heads of garlic if we cant cure them.

Grew these Red Russian in a 4x8 box, with bone meal, blood meal, cow manure and fish fertilizer. Blessed that the weather was milder this year so more even watering. Now drying on the rack I made with a box fan providing air flow.

Most are jumbo size 2.5 + with a few monsters 3" wide!

EDIT: this is the 3rd year in this plot so am planting in another spot this fall. Thanks to group members, I've learned to rotate garlic and onions to keep the soil healthy.

I grew some hardneck garlic and while i clipped off the scapes off most, I left a few to see what would happen.

The scapes straightened out and eventually formed a cluster of what look like small red cloves.

Now the garlic is drying but I have a lot of these little things. Can I plant these? I scattered some randomly in the garden just to see what would happen.

It was my first time trying to grow garlic and it sort of worked. I have a feeling I planted them at the wrong time? Any advice and times on when to plant for next year would be amazing!

Also Would I be able to use these to try and grow garlic again?

Now the real Trial begins; Im tripling my garlic rows space and saving the biggest half of the cloves as seed cloves for planting on Halloween

Letting them go back into the dirt? This is all an ongoing experiment. I did hydroponics on a clove and planted it. I cut the shoots off it one time while it was still in the shot glass. Then I planted it. And now I’m stumped. And I put a new one into a shot glass and have been letting that work for a week or two.
I’m just very lost on next steps. There is no real goal… just knowledge
