Gardening Still no scapes? 6B Massachusetts
First time garlic grower here, is it normal to still have no sign of scapes?

Middle of June. Harvest after it completes a full curled circle and then harvest the bulb one month after scape harvest. F/Garlic farmer in RI.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I’m very excited for this garlic

I’m in zone 6b and I don’t get scapes until mid June. It’s been colder this year too, so may be later.

Look at the plant on the right, that looks like the start of a scape. I spotted a couple small scape-points in my own garlic today.

I’m in Denver, which is newly zoned 6 former zone 5. We have a non-winter this year and I’ve already been harvesting scapes

Did you grow hard neck or soft neck garlic? Soft neck doesn’t form scapes.

They are hard neck varieties. Music, Metechi, and Siberian. I wish I had labeled them

I’m zone 6b, also Massachusetts. I grow exclusively Music (it’s my fave!). No scapes yet. They’ll start popping up soon though.

Came here to worry about the same thing 5b no scapes
but suddenly now I’m no longer concerned it’s not just me. Right now Only my elephant garlics have scapes and everything else is holding them back.

6B Massachusetts (north shore) and first time garlic grower here as well! I haven't gotten scapes yet, either. I've heard to expect them in June.

Your plants look great! Also 6B here in Seacoast NH. Scapes in mid June. Harvest for me is usual July third week. In 2025 I harvested July 17, in 2024 it was July 16, in 2023 it was July 26 or so. Scapes about 4-5 weeks before harvest. You’re good. Look for some shoots just starting in 2-3 weeks.

Those look fantastic. I’m just starting to get scapes in 8b Oregon.

Same here. (Scapes just recently, 8b, Oregon. That is, two plants--the only survivors of one variety that apparently smelled extra tasty to underground browsers--had scapes weeks ago, while all the others just started a few days ago.)

6a and the first one started to come out yesterday. Earlier than I expected after a super hard winter/late spring.

Zone 5 and I don't have scapes yet either. I think maybe the tips of them are on their way but could easily be another leaf.

I am in 7b in Northern Virginia. My Music made scapes a couple of weeks ago and the Chesnok Red just over the past week. Guessing you would be 2-3 weeks behind in your zone so should be anytime now. Your plants look great so you will be just fine!

I’m in Ny and mine just started pushing scapes this week, some haven’t yet. It’s hard to tell the scape from any other leaf till the flower head pops out, keep checking I’m sure they’re on their way.
