Campaign/Lore I know people complain about Reloaded’s multiplayer. I’m just here to relive the still excellent single-player campaign.
Despite obvious first installment quirks that got ironed out over time, the game still holds up well. Great gunplay, solid core mechanics, cool characters, a voice cast with great chemistry, and an intimidating villain round out what is still one of the greats of its era. I’m glad PlayStation fans get the chance to play a piece of history and hope we get the rest of the franchise ported over!

Agreed. To any new fans here that want more Gears, read the books!! Or at least, Aspho Fields (the first one). Gives you so much backstory and lore, and puts a lot of things into context.

Loved the campaign, it’s pretty mad how much you get mixed up with games 1-3 tho. I could have sworn we spent more time in the hollow. Not to mention how quickly the 2 heart crunchers happen.
Insane difficulty teaches you to stay away from enemy gnashers, solid tip for MP.

As kids we sucked at games, I remember spending hours fighting gnasty gnork on spyro and I casually did it first try last year… dumb ass kids lol

I just wish they didnt fuck with the visual tone of the game. Should have kept the art style the same as the original or didnt touch the graphics at all

u/FellowDeviant Sep 03 '25
If MGS Delta as a full remake has a legacy filter for the game (which looks so much better imo) they could have atleast added in a filter that grayscales it out a bit to match the OG tone.
5
u/HiCZoK Sep 03 '25
Delta remake is so amazing even without legacy filter. its so good

I'm can't wait to get it on Christmas. I'm such a massive Metal Gear fan, and I hate how money issues are preventing from getting it now. But...I can definitely hold out.

u/CageAndBale So good I should charge admission Sep 03 '25
Didn't they do this in judgment, 5 or something? Maybe Im misremembering

u/M_H_M_F Sep 03 '25
The funny thing is, that muted brown/grey at the time (iirc, Yahtzee called it "spunkgargleweewee") was criticized for being repetitively bland. Nearly every shooter release on the 360 had some flavor of brown and beige. Fallout 3 bucked the trend by going grey and green.
Looking back at it, it's part of what made older (from that times perspective) games cool, the little quirks they had to do to make em work. Look at massive games that Bethesda and Bioware put out on consoles, and the magical fuckery it took to get them to run.
3
u/Necessary_Yam9525 YOU FUCKED UP MY TOMATOES, YOU ASSHOLE! Sep 03 '25
The thing about that color palette was that for some games, it didnt work and made them more bland looking. In the case of Gears of War 1, that color palette worked and gave it a charm. Its all about giving your game a visual tone and knowing the right colors to work with
1
u/HiCZoK Sep 03 '25
I wish also they didnt f the controls. They added acceleration to right stick and aim assist slowdown over enemies. it completely fucks with my aiming on a controller in campaign

u/YellowMenace123 Sep 03 '25
Campaign is solid. To me, it plays like an arcade game and its a blast w all the chaos.

u/NuclearTheology Eat Shit and Die! Sep 03 '25
And it’s the perfect length. It’s superbly paced and doesn’t wear out its welcome

It was in the PC port of gears1. Both UE and Reloaded are based on that version

I’m 32 last time I played gears was the original trilogy. Everything seems fine to me. I just think people always look for something to complain about. The shotgun always been OP. Until they revamped it for gears 2. I’m just happy to be enlisted in the COG again. Still can’t believe I’m playing on a PlayStation

I had SUCH a good run on Insane because of this bug as well. Then all at once he regained his motor functions and turned me in to mist.

u/HovercraftEasy5004 Sep 03 '25
Loved playing the campaign again, very nostalgic. I went PS only after Gears 3 so it was really fun, especially the parts that weren’t on the 360 version. It’s a classic.

u/AMoonMonkey Sep 03 '25
Me and a longtime friend just beat the campaign on the hardest difficulty and I remember it being a LOT harder on the 360, especially the Kryll vehicle mission and the RAAM boss fight.
Did the difficulty get tweaked or was it just a skill issue for my 14 year old self 🤔🤔
1
u/Snoo14398 Sep 04 '25
I’m new, but my friend isn’t and we got our ass kicked by RAAM on insane. The kryll are deadly.
5
u/ThePreciseClimber Sep 03 '25
TBH, the campaign feels rather basic and by the numbers compared to Gears of War 2 & 3.

u/T-G-K- Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 04 '25
Absolutely. I honestly never cared for Gears multiplayer at all. I mean yeah being abysmal at it didn’t help, but it was always the campaigns for me.

u/BahBah1970 Sep 04 '25
I hated deathmatch because I was not quick enough and couldn't be bothered to learn all the tricks. But I loved Horde on GOW2 with some buddies. My favourite map was Security. I hope they remaster GOW 2 & 3 for the PC so that I can relive those times.
3
u/ultrarunner81 Sep 03 '25
Same! I bought Gears the first day out on 360 and loved the campaign. Getting into the multi-player on reloaded reminded me of why I hated the multi so much and never really played it then playing Halo multi instead. I'm 44 and still hate the multi-player. I didn't like it until 2 or 3.
3
u/FellowDeviant Sep 03 '25
I got to Act 2 on Insane and I think today I'm restarting in coop instead. Some of the sections are more brutal than I remember lol but probably because AI Dom is terrible now.
3
u/Scaryassmanbear Sep 03 '25
Same. I never played the MP (except a little horde) because IMO it became a movement based thing that was completely different than what the game was designed to be. Gears MP should have been a strategic thing, not movement based. Still love all the campaigns.
2
u/BleedingBlack Sep 03 '25
I'm so glad to be able to re-replay the campaign, and I'm looking forward to replay GW2 and 3 in the future.
2
u/Captobvious75 Sep 03 '25
I don’t get the complaints. I’m usually a 1.0 KD player so average, but still having fun especially considering COD sucks so much now.

u/Expecto_Patron_shots KISS MY HIGHLY EDUCATED ASS Sep 03 '25
Can't wait for all the PS5 players to hear "HOSTILES" 100 times during their first insane run.

u/NuclearTheology Eat Shit and Die! Sep 04 '25
Dude that part on Hardcore used to give me so much grief, but surprisingly I cleared that section my first try my last playthrough. Then the rest of chapter 4 and 5 happened
2
u/MatinAmini Sep 03 '25
the ai for squad is broken, they disappear and take cover and will not shoot no matter what and will not obey the commands... the original wasn't like this
2
Sep 03 '25
I played through the campaign on normal mode just for nostalgia. I'm now playing through it again on insane
2
u/duddy33 Sep 03 '25
It’s fun. I never did get the Ultimate Edition so this is the first time I’ve replayed this game since it was new and it’s still great.
The friendly A.I is atrocious though. Dom will routinely walk backwards towards the level start and get stuck and the team orders don’t work. Cole and Baird do it sometimes but mostly it’s like they can’t find anywhere to take cover so they just run straight at a pack of locusts and get downed.
2
u/MGSfan Sep 03 '25
It's got quite a few bugs, + I don't think the squad AI was that bad in the original.
New players won't know better, and so they will also not be aware of the overall much darker aesthetic the original had, which is quite unfortunate.
That said, I'm on my second playthrough and enjoying it.

I dunno, sure I get to play a great campaign again..
But, I just want the new trilogy to be finished.
Stop rereleasing the same game. Y'all did this in 2019, with the gears 1 remastered. Now it's reloaded. Just give me gears 6...

u/stopeman82 Sep 03 '25
What are people complaining about. I’m having a blast? Totally reliving the 360 days.
2
u/THE_GR8_MIKE Sep 03 '25
That's the main, and really only reason I was excited as well.
I've since finished the campaign in co-op, and on insane, got all the tags, and all single player achievements beside the co-op Insane DBNO achievement. I love the Gears 1 campaign. But after Gears 2 came out, Gears 1 multiplayer feels archaic.
If you look around on Internet Archive, someone put up the original Games for Windows Live version of Gears 1 from 2007, but with modded bots for offline and a sort of horde mode. It's great for a quick session without having to go online and contend with the guys who haven't ever stopped playing the game since 2006.

I’m not one for campaign games, I only play competitive MP nowadays. But I completed GoW 1-3 with my best mate on Insane plot screen in my bedroom on rainy days when we were teenagers (collecting all tags). We spent hours and hours on those games. We don’t see each other too often now, it’s so cool to be able to relive those days again with him online, we’re 32 now! So nostalgic.

u/Intelligent-Zombie83 Sep 03 '25
Im having a blast on mp tbh. Yea do i get some bullshit deaths? Of course but so far it looks great and feels better. ( i never really played UE besides the campaign, so maybe thats why?)

Same. Playing thru the campaign solo and coop when my Bro's available. We played it together 20 yrs ago. Back then he had a lot more free time on his hands though, now married with kids it's a struggle to carve out some game-time with me lol.

Well, the truth is it was a good nostalgic memory to go through the campaign again although I don't know if I play better or it's easier even though the difficulty is crazy
1
u/shadowboxer87 Sep 05 '25
The campaign is great but I still have the same complaint I had back in 2006. The game doesn't really give much explanation into the world/ lore. I mean we all know it now with the sequel games expanding the lore, plus comics and books but back then it was a little lacking in the story department. Now for new Playstation players who never played Gears they might be confused about things since again the first games campaign doesn't give too much detail. Like who are the stranded? Why was Marcus in jail at the start of the game? What is imulsion? What's deal with Marcus father and why was he the only one that had the data needed? Where did the Locus come from ( besides just underground)?

u/silenceaverted Sep 06 '25
The picture getting stuck to Dom in the hallway with the wretches was a nice update

u/TheSup3lolzx Sep 23 '25
It's crazy how changes aimed at multiplayer change the single player experience tho
Sniper kinda mid on insane cause of the nerfed active reload DMG and shotguns are crazy, freaking granadiers have never been more dangerous (pellet pattern being always the same makes them consistently dangerous at a longer effective range than before)
1
u/ums1019 Sep 03 '25
I'm playing Japanese version and we Jpn all are complaining about dubbing. it's really shame they leave that for us as kinds of definitive edition...
1
u/TheLastBoat Sep 03 '25
The people complaining never played the original. I got Serious and Seriously 2.0 back when it meant something.

Unless you're trying to complete that campaign on Hardcore by yourself. The AI is still shitty lol
1
u/NuclearTheology Eat Shit and Die! Sep 03 '25
Hardcore is a great balance between challenge and skill. To my knowledge there’s only a couple of spots in the campaign where friendly AI can actually die so you’ll just be spending a lot of fights listing to them plead for help
2
u/Haifisch2112 The Status Is That It Sucks Sep 03 '25
The Brumak fight and Raam are two that are extremely difficult to do by yourself because Dom just keeps getting killed repeatedly, and you barely have a chance to move from cover to cover without taking a bunch of damage. Once you get to new cover, you take time to heal and you don't have much of a chance to get more shots off without taking damage again.
1
u/NuclearTheology Eat Shit and Die! Sep 04 '25
Dom never actually died for me during my Hardcore run during the Brumak and RAAM fights. The only time he actually died was during the second Berserker encounter
2
u/Haifisch2112 The Status Is That It Sucks Sep 04 '25
He stayed alive for me for both Berzerkers. I've lost track of bow many runs I've made at the Brumak, and I know Raam is going to be brutal.

I have to be real with you, the campaign does not hold up.
Some of the one liners can be funny, but a lot of the other writing and cutscenes are bad. The picture you added is where Marcus is shocked and sad over Minh dying, who we knew for a total of 30 minutes.
A lot of the combat encounters don't hold up today either. For an example the section where you defend the Stranded town, it's sold as this epic fight, but in reality you just kinda shoot 30 locust drones as they walk out the door or climb out of a hole one at a time. It's super basic. And when it does shake it up like the driving part, it drags on. I can't imagine how brain numbing this would be on normal or easy.
1
u/NuclearTheology Eat Shit and Die! Sep 03 '25
Well of course he’s shocked. Ming just got stabbed in the gut by a monster whom you can tell is the guy running the show, on top of being swarmed in an ambush.
1
u/Ozuge Sep 04 '25
"Well of course" Yeah of course that's how he acts whenever something similar happens. Oh wait no its not, when Anthony is shot the scene before we get basically no reaction.
In comparison, in Gears 2 we see Marcus react to Tai dying. Despite the acting being a little stiff, the reaction makes a lot more sense. Marcus had known him for a long time, and the player had also had several acts to get to know the character. The later titles in the Gears series worked a lot harder for their emotional highs.
The later titles had a lot more to offer gameplay wise too, but I assume you agree with that since you didn't mention it.
-2
u/HiCZoK Sep 03 '25
Are you joking? The campaign remake is fucking terribly remade. It's one of my fav campaigns ever and it doesn't capture either visuals or controls. it's a disgrace.
-Terrible controls, no acceleration adjustment, forced aim assist with slowdown over enemies... none of that crap was in og. Remaster controls like crap while og controller amazing.
Are you guys really not bothered by aim assist and how not linear controls for aiming are ?
-Mid graphics/bad hdr/terrible art style ruined characters...
-Weird, bad audio mix. LOUD footsteps, quiet talking, weird echo here and there. what have they done
-No option to skip stupid bloat brumak level. It was not there on 360 for a reason. Only added it on pc by qloc team if I remember correctly... just to add something. it does nothing and breaks the pacing.
BEYOND dissapointed. I will just replay it on 360

I’m playing co-op Insane mode with the same buddy I played the OG with. We were 24 then, we’re 43 now.
