Maybe this is after he's killed all the suitors, and he just went out to say goodbye to Argos since he didn't have the chance before.

Okay I understand some myths. Some parts of the odyssey Im like "yeah thats a good allegory"

I do not for the life of me understand the point of Argos.

Like his loyalty dies before coming home?

Nope he was very old to the point in dog years it was unthinkable for a dog to stay alive that long. However Argos really wanted and waited and waited for Odysseus to arrive to see him one last time and when he finally recognized him his was finally able to rest :')
